Great hotel, great location. A little difficult to find, but we just found a guy to carry our bags to the hotel for 10 euros(they are all around offering their services-well worth it when you are new to Venice). The hotel room was beautiful, our window overlooked the canal, amd during the days there were always gondolas going past. We were very close to the Rialto, and San Marco- a great location. Would highly recommend it to anyone

Hotel Alloggia alla Scala was a little difficult to find the first time around, but that's Venice for you. Other than that, we had a lovely time here. It's sort of like staying at your grandmother's house, but my wife and I found that to be really charming. The lady that runs the hotel is extremely sweet. She doesn't speak much English, but we all managed to communicate just fine. The room we were in was on the first floor, so you could literally just look out the window and watch gondolas go by. Super surreal, but awesome. The hotel is very close to the action of Piazza San Marco, but situated just a couple of tricky turns off the beaten path in a very pretty, quiet cul de sac right next to the Palazzo Contarini del Bovolo. This hotel is for those interested in a quaint, rustic Venizian experience.

Additional helpful note: the directions that the hotel gave us from the train station were a little confusing. The instructions were to take the vaporetto (boat shuttle, the Venice equivalent of a city bus) to the Rialto stop, but there is also a Rialto Market stop, which is earlier on the route. Don't get off at Rialto Market. Get off at Rialto (near the Rialto bridge).

This hotel is not really a hotel but more a house. I stayed in a single room. It was very clean but the room was so small that I felt like in a prison! There was no tv. I know that people don't go on holidays to watch tv but sometimes while relaxing at the hotel it's nice to have it, especially when you're on your own! It's not too far from Piazza St Marco but it is so tricky to find it. When I got in Venice and asked people how to get there, all of them told me it was a labyrinth! Anyway, I think I just paid this price for the location. There is no wifi in the rooms, just downstairs by the way! And m People cant even speak English! I will never go back there!

We stayed in a double room as we were travelling with a child and it was summer. There is no air conditioning, and there were no screens on the windows so we were absolutely eaten by Mosquitos! Better to stay here n cooler weather. Also there was construction next door that started quite early, and unfortunately for us on the night we stayed, a cat howled all night in the courtyard outside. And I mean all night. Apart from these unfortunate circumstances, it was a decent place to stay, the hosts were courteous, and the rooms were clean. The location was great, but be advised finding it the first time can be tricky. After that its a very short walk to the water taxi and Rialto bridge.

Firstly the location - as stated it's very very handy for St Marks Sq and the Rialto bridge - both about a 5 min walk. The hotel is down a small cul de sac an is in a very quiet area.

We were recieved by a nice old lady - limited English but friendly enough. No dramas checking in.

The lobby has a coffee machins (about a Euro) and a vending machine selling snacks and drinks - not too overly priced either.

The place is basic - no TV, toiletries etc, but then again the adverts are very honest about this. There is no breakfast, even if one wanted it - again as per advert. One really big bonus is free wifi which wasnt on the advert but it was certainly there and works a treat. (Our room was downstairs and we got it in the room - we saw a guest in the lobby with a laptop so maybee its not hotel wide - but it free and its reliable).

The room is a bit odd - bright wall hangings and paintings but comfortable enough and the bed is ok. The heating was intermittent - sometimes it was absolutley freezing (We stayed late December) but maybe two thirds of the time it stayed on.

Why only average ? Well we know its Venice, and it IS at the cheap end, but 200 Euros for 2 nights (Incl local tax) to sleep in what is really a spare room is steep. So all in all an ok place to stay - no bed bugs, horrible smells, damp or noise. Ideal for people who get up early - explore and come back late to sleep. If you stay here there (shouldn't) be any nasty surprises.

My husband and I stayed here for 1 night. The location was perfect. This is a no frills hotel. No toiletries or TV. It worked for us, but want to make sure others know what isn't available. It felt like we were renting a room in a house, more than a hotel. We figured the price couldn't be beat as were weren't there for the room.
