“Very nice hotel”
Reviewed September 10, 2011

I booked this hotel on Hotels.com, and was sure I booked the Deluxe room. I'm still sorting out what happened, but when we checked in we were given the "Classic" room. Way too small for 2 friends staying 5 days. When they moved us to the bigger room (charging 50 Euro additional per nite), we were much more comfortable. We also got hit with a 5 Euro per person, per nite tourist tax that literally went into effect the day we checked in (all hotels in Venice will now be charging this).

The hotel itself is very nice, located near St. Mark's. The desk staff were all very helpful, making dinner reservations, and patiently directing us by map to the areas we wished to explore. One gentleman, Lorenzo, stood out as particularly helpful to us. The breakfast was included in the rate, and was the expected breads, meats, cheeses, etc found in Europe. The gentleman serving coffee and tea in the dining area was very welcoming. The room was very clean, and the air conditioner was Wonderful during the intense August heatwave that Italy experienced!

We did go to the rooftop bar on a a few nights. Because of the heatwave, it did not appear many hotel occupants were using it. The view is lovely there, and there are tables, double seated chaise, etc. A nice amenity at the hotel, but empty. Apparently, only guests may visit the rooftop bar...we were the only 2 people there at nite. Lucio and David who work the bar, were professional, and helpful giving suggestions of places in Venice we may not have seen otherwise...Thanks, Guys!

Our single concern was that the man who refills the mini bar never knocked or rang the bell, rather just unlocking the door and walking in on 2 separate occasions. We did mention it to the front desk. Overall, this was an excellent stay.

We stayed at the Hotel A La Commedia for 2 nights to celebrate a special occasion. It was a perfect setting in a very special city. We cannot fault the hotel in any way from the friendly staff who will do anything to help you to the magnificent standard of the room. We would not hesitate to stay here again.

It's in Venice, we've been four times in two years, that says it all. A former theatre modernised into a lovely boutique hotel. Clean, comfortable and friendly with a rear alley leading to the Rialto Bridge. Oh! and a roof terrace bar with sun loungers. But don't tell anyone or you won't get in next time you want to book as they will all want to go!

Room Tip: Both the rooms were lovely and you are not paying canal side prices

Hotel has almost the perfect location - 5 minutes from Rialto and 10 minutes from St. Marks. We were worried about tourist overflow but were glad we chose A La Commedia. Made for very convenient excursions and shopping. Staff was helpful with recommendations and reservations.

A couple of side notes; as with most heavy tourist spots, there are scams everywhere. We strongly considered not taking a gondola ride because the prices are ridiculous (100Euro though you may be able to find cheaper at diff locations and times) and the gondolas back up like traffic on the highway. Reality is we would never do again - overpriced and not that romantic.

The only reason this doesn't rate an excellent is because my husband didn't care for the beds (just a little too firm, and the pillows too flat)!

Otherwise, an excellent, EXCELLENT location - so close to the Grande Canal and Rialto Bridge, as well as a number of fabulous restaurants. Also, a great rooftop lounge, perfect for celebrating with some new friends (no food is served, just a bar). Gorgeous gold motif - big rooms, lovely view. Bathroom also very large and modern.

Not on the canal, which is probably a benefit in the summer.

This is my Venice hotel from now on.It has everything going for it.
In a city where a single water bus ride costs £6 it helps to be in walking distance of the major sights. The hotel is just around the corner,in a quiet spot ,from the Rialto bridge and bus stop. It has been renovated . Bedrooms are opulent with crisp linen and superb marble bathrooms. A stunning bonus is a roof top bar ,tranquil in a busy city .All staff were impressive but Signor Lorenzo B on the front desk could hold a job down at Claridges or the Carlyle. Full of wisdom. The gentleman who ran the bar and breakfast room was incredibly kind and rustled up a large sandwich for one of my boys who had been feeling unwell earlier but recovered his appetite at 10pm.

We stayed in this hotel at the end of our two week intense trip to Italy. It was so wonderfully relaxed, it made us giddy. We were really looking for a quite place to stay and we couldn't have found a better hotel. Slightly tucked in, away from St Marco's square, quite and clean, it gave us the best finish. The staff was incredibly nice, consierge's rwcommenndations for dinners were outstanding, breakfasts at the hotels were perfect and we enjoyed every moment of it. Would go back any time ....
