“Great as a base to see Venice”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 15, 2014

We stayed here from 28th December and left on the 1st Jan. It was our first time in Venice and found this a good hotel as a base to find our way round. The food was good and we had the new year gala dinner which was great but at 6 courses a little too much. Only think that stopped me giving it a 5 was that the free water taxi to / from the hotel was often full so unless you want to wait for an hour you need to take the local transport. In the end we decided to buy a two day pass which was a well worth it as it got us to see more of Venice. We would recommend a water front room if you can get one.

Room Tip: Book a room at the front if you can as you get to see all the interesting traffic on the water

An extraordinary fine hotel altogether: - Service in the breakfast room was stunning - The breakfast itself offered a great varity of treats, fresh, nicely presented & spacious (no cueing!) - The architecture inside this old mill simple and most appealing - Room nicely decorated and very italian - Location accessable by boat only (but not much of an issue). Hotel offers regular shuttles, easily connecting with the public boat to/from the airport (15 € one way/ 27€ return) - Free internet in the lobby - Promotional room rates offer good value for money - Restaurants in the neighborhood: Much cheaper than THE Tourist Centre. And Restaurants next stop from the hotel the same.

3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 14, 2014

I stayed here with my girlfriend in January 2014. We got a pretty good deal to stay here through a third-party site, so though "Why not?". The room was the nicest we stayed in on our trip through Europe. Not the best or the one with the most character, but the "nicest" if that makes sense. I guess that's expected though, because it was also the most expensive.

The highlight was definitely the comfortable king size bed. We're both pretty tall, so staying in that bed with plenty of room was a real novelty for us. Like I said, the place was really nice too, but in a sort of generic, hotel-chain type of way is probably the best way to describe it.

We were there in the off-season, which was why it was cheap, but it also meant the rooftop bar wasn't open, which would have been one of the hotel's biggest drawcards, given it is on an island off the main part of Venice. That means you would have a great view of Venice from a distance, but we weren't able to experience that.

Our biggest gripe however - and this is probably just a hotel-chain thing - was the impression that the Hilton was trying to get as much money as they could out of us for extras. For instance, visiting the sauna was 20 euros. A toasted cheese sandwich was 14 euros. I guess people must pay that much, but it seemed silly to us. I accidentally knocked over a Diet Coke in the mini-bar and an automatic system triggered that I'd taken it out and charged me 7 euros (I was able to get this wiped from the final bill). We also needed to do some washing, but to wash one shirt was 10 euros.

The worst though, was that we were staying in a 5 star hotel but had to pay for Wi-Fi. I think it was about 20 euros a day. Ridiculous. We stayed in places a fifth of the price and, even though they were more modest, they included free Wi-Fi as standard.

The staff also insisted they had to take not only the full cost of the stay off my credit card when we checked in, but an additional 150 euros (50 a day for three days). They said they would charge the correct amount when I checked out, but it took almost a week for this to happen. If I needed that money it would have been more of an issue, but it was just annoying that they felt they could take money they weren't entitled to and then take so long to return it. When I enquired about the payment method, the staff were quite unhelpful and kept repeating the same thing without listening to what I was actually saying. I just gave up, because I didn't want to be one of those guests that cause scenes in the hotel lobby.

There was also a free boat to take guests to Venice, but only run every hour or so.

In short, I don't think I'd stay here again. If you like the security and comfort of staying in a bland, chain hotel then go for it. But if I went to Venice again, I think I'd much prefer to stay actually in Venice and perhaps in a place that had a bit more character and felt more homely. And of course, somewhere with FREE WI-FI!

Arrival: We did have to wait a good 30 minutes before we got checked in only to find that our room with a view was not available.

Room: We are gold members so we did expect a bit of a decent room however we were stuck in a corner room with no view - and I do mean no view, a brick building was outside our window. The room was a decent size and had everything needed for a vacation. One complaint is that in order to use the hair dryer you have to go outside the bathroom (over to the desk) b/c the hair dryer plug doesn't fit anywhere in the bathroom.

Staff: the staff was very courteous. We used the concierge many times and they were always very helpful arranging even for us to see a pharmacist after hours.

Restaurant: breakfast was a very big buffet, my husband loved it. Fresh fruits, meats, eggs; the variety was amazing. The onsite restaurant was ok, the food was average but the service was poor.

boats: the hotel does offer free boats to take you to Murano. However they don't tell you that you have to go through a sales pitch with the glass company where you arrive. Our sales guy was rude and uninterested in our questions. When we asked another sales guys he referred us back to our guy. Eventually we just left out the back door and enjoyed a lovely stroll around Murano buying plenty of items from people who cared!

Overall: our stay was ok, if I was to go back to Venice I would stay at this hotel again I would just be louder about the unhappiness with our room.

What a magnificent stay! I loved every second of it and wished we could have stayed longer. Simply outstanding. Large rooms, well furnished, perfectly clean. The bathroom is large, well lighted, outstanding. Breakfast buffet was to die for. Nice Italian and Asian food offers. Had two nights dinner on the Bacaromi/Aroma restaurant. Very nice Italian and Venetian dishes. Probably one of our best meals during our Eurotrip. Location is a plus, in front of Venice, very easy to reach but very calmed and relaxing at the same time. Congratulation to Iliana (or similar) in Front Desk. Always with a smile, great attitude. They arranged for breakfast box for us as we were leaving quite early. Highly recommendable.

Room Tip: Pay extra for a Deluxe room with Venice view. It is worth every extra penny

If your chain of choice is Hilton you'll be at home. I was amazed to learn that the conversion is relatively new as the rooms feel incredibly dated with dark veneer furniture and bling fittings. The bed was very comfortable, sleep quality great and the bathroom functioned perfectly so it ticks the most important boxes. Wifi in the communal areas is adequate though slow and ludicrously expensive in the rooms. The hotel's shuttle operates a limited service, if you want to get into Venice at other times it's a 10 minute walk to the public boat through a less than salubrious (though seemingly safe) part of the city.

If you want to visit Venice from a sanitised distance and feel safe in an international chain, I recommend this hotel. If you'd rather be in Italy than feel like you were on a business trip I'd check out the alternatives.

We stayed here on a family vacation last summer to start off our tour of Italy. What a great way to start off the trip! The hotel was absolutely beautiful. The hotel was modern and very spacious. The employees were very kind and took care of all of our needs. The biggest perk was the free transportation to and from the hotel via the water taxi. Definitely take advantage of it throughout your stay. Time permitting, make sure to try and catch the sun setting from the rooftop pool. Stunning view of almost all of Venice! Couldn't be happier with this hotel!!!
