We stayed with Sandra and Leonardo for four nights in early May, having chosen it due to the previous positive reviews, it’s location in one of the quieter, less touristy neighbourhoods of Venice and easy access to the airport via the Vaporetto. We had the canal room, which as the name suggests, overlooks one of the smaller, though very active canals of Venice, in the Cannaregio district. The room was quite small but had excellent built-in wardrobes, which also accommodate our large suitcase, once unpacked. The room also had two chairs and a chest of drawers with tea/coffee making facilities. The bathroom was of a decent size with a large shower and good-sized vanity unit around the basin. We only used the Aircon on one evening and it was very effective as well as being super quiet. During our four night stay, our towels and bed linen were changed after the second night; to be honest, the bedding would have done for the four nights but it was good to get the towels changed as they never dry properly in between use so quickly take on a damp smell. The trek from the Fundamenta Nuove water bus stop is not that far but with heavy luggage it is bad enough, particularly as every bridge has steps on both sides and then on arrival at Sandra’s there are a further three flights of steps but we knew this as it is made very clear on the B&B website and Sandra has even gone to the trouble of providing step by step, directions with accompanying photographs, which was extremely helpful. Sandra offered to help with our luggage and also attempted to open the second half of the glass door but we managed without help and she then left us to get settled in, giving us a very good map of Venice, together with her own self-produced local map with restaurants, shops, bars, etc. numbered on the map by location with details on a separate sheet, which, was once again very useful and a very nice touch, which epitomises Sandra’s careful attention to detail and clear desire to ensure her guests are well catered for. After a quick freshen up, we went out for a quick explore and to have dinner; the B&B is in a charming, quiet residential area but within minutes of leaving the B&B and crossing two small bridges, we were in the heart of bustling Strada Nuova. We loved the neighbourhood of Cannaregio and found plenty of lovely little bars and restaurants, many offering canal side dining and drinks. Sandra and Leonardo take great pride in their home and in the hospitality they provide; this was epitomised by the ever changing table cloth, napkins and matching glassware each morning together with the excellent and varied breakfast; I must have tried 20 different Italian cheeses over four mornings, just don’t ask me to remember them all! A different fruit platter or fruit salad was provided each today together with different meats and a homemade savoury baked dish and a different cake every morning, together with a different type of freshly squeezed juice. In addition, Sandra made us lovely, fresh, strong hot chocolate every morning rather than tea or coffee; she was quite wonderful. Many of her guests have returned to Venice and her B&B many times over and if we should return to Venice in the future, we would definitely stay in Sandra’s.
