We made the mistake of catching a ferry to San Marco from the train station which took over an hour (including an unscheduled stopover when we were booted off halfway as the captain finished his shift). I recommend a water taxi if you have luggage/in a group - it is about €60 from the station. Typical of Venice everything is down a tiny alley and involves steps so beware if you have large suitcases. Instructions to find the hotel were clear however. As a result, we were a bit later than expected arriving at the hotel (around 9pm).
This appeared to be a big problem with the front desk who could not take a credit card (against policy), would not let us pay in advance (against policy), would not issue a receipt (against policy) and said we had to check out after 8am (which meant we would miss our flight). After a lot of discussion we were allowed to pay cash in advance so we could leave early next morning but still with no receipt. To his credit, the person at the front desk arranged for us to have early breakfast.
Once in the room, it was pleasant - typically small as is the norm for Venice, but clean and comfortable beds. Dodgy plumbing meant water supply was a bit patchy on the top floor room though. Aircon was great to have too, especially on a 30 degree day.
Overall the room was fine, however keep in mind that late arrivals/early departures are not well tolerated here.
