Al Palazzetto

Reviewed March 31, 2012

We stayed there four nights last week and found it to be just perfect for our Venice experience. Friends from Milan joined us and were very happy with Al Palazzetto as well. All of us are very well traveled and have stayed in a variety of accommodations from hostels to 5 star hotels and we all agreed that this place is a great B & B.
My wife and I had a corner room with a canal view which was spacious, charming and clean. Our friends had the "attic" room with a roof terrace and I liked that even more than ours but it also cost a little more.

Just a quick comment on a couple of the reviews I read: This is Venice, the houses are going to be old. Dig it or pick another town.
I found the propriator, Davide, to be most helpful and accomadating and we never experienced any form of disturbance from his family.

We had a very happy week here in January 2012. We stayed in two rooms, Both of them very warm, clean and comfortable - despite it being very cold out side. Lots of hot water. Good beds

Good buffet breakfast (inc delicious ham and pannatone) served until 10am. Helpful owner.

The location in Cannaregio is great for getting around Venice. Interesting restaurants and bars nearby. Quiet location. Easy to find.

We did not find the childrens presence a problem, in fact it created a more friendly, easy going atmosphere; and made Venice more "real" for living amongst among Venetians.

Given it is a B and B I'm not sure what other reviewers were expecting in terms of "room services" and if people are offended about peeling external walls due for a lick of paint - then Venice is not the place for them.

Room Tip: The attic room has has sloping ceilings inc in the bathrom.Which may be a problem for tall people...

We had heard horror stories about noise and tiny rooms in Venice. Not at all the case at Al Palazetto! The room was very large and comfortable with a nice sized bathroom. It was a little tricky to find the place, but manageable with the help of some friendly people on the street. The nice part of it being off the beaten path is that it was very quiet at night and we got a great night's sleep. There is no bad smell, that problem had obviously been resolved. Great, great place to stay in Venice and we would definitely stay here again!

LOVED the location, David (the owner), the room was very nice, private bath, did I mention a great location?! (not in the tourist area but San Marco is easily reached by foot in about 10 minutes), great price.

Bad: They live on the third floor directly above the guest rooms and their child runs back and forth, bouncing balls, yelling, etc from 5 or 6am and throughout the evening. The kitchen is right outside your door which is where they eat diner (and where the child cries and screams through dinner). Not exactly the romantic bed and breakfast you picture, huh?
The only other big negative is that David told us we could use the water vaporetta (4 minute walk) that would go straight to the airport or take the other one, closer to the B&B and then get off and take a bus to the airport. He said either way was covered by the bus pass we had gotten when we arrived. WRONG!!! And he told us the wrong times, we found out when we walked there the night before to confirm. Thank God! We were there at 4:15am and got the water bus (since we didn't want to transfer from a water bus to an actual bus if we didn't have to) and found out it was an extra 33 Euros and that our water bus pass didn't cover this one. Great! It's our last 2 hours oversees, we have very few Euros left, and now we have to pay $45 to get to the airport b/c it's too late to go to the other side of the island to catch the other one. Pretty bad end to the trip but I guess that's called "incidentals". We would have been able to "swallow it" a little more if David, resident of Venice, hadn't been the one to assure us on the time and the free price tag.

If you choose to stay here:
Bring ear plugs for the screaming child
Bring an alarm clock
Use the regular water vaporetta and take the bus the rest of the way to the airport so it's covered and verify the times for yourself rather than asking David

This place is very well situated to see Venice and is priced at UK B&B rates but not up to that standard. We travelled in mid-November and found the place to be very cold with inadequate heating and minimal room services. Breakfast is a cross between UK and continental but is sufficient. The manager, Davide, is most helpful but is limited in the amount of services on offer. The building itself is like most in Venice - very old - and in need of a good deal of structural enhancement. So my advice is to use this in the warmer months for Venice is extremely cold from November on or be very young and warm blooded!

We stayed at Al Palazzetto after hearing about it form a friend who had stayed there. It was very nice and clean. The accommodations were spacious, bright and very clean and comfortable. The room comes with a couch-bed-table chairs and a small bar fridge. Our host Davide was helpful with directions and suggestions of places to see while we were there. The building is on a canal obviously and is just a short walk form the veparetto landing and very easy to find. At night the entrance to the building is well lit and that made it very easy for night time access. It was quiet also which was appreciated. I would stay there again.

Room Tip: Rooms facing the canal are brighter and sem to have a little more ambiance.

My home is to be found in the sestiere di Cannaregio, very close to the Ca' d'Oro palace, in an extremely central, yet peaceful area. The palace where I live dates back to the 1700's and reflects characteristic Venetian taste: period furniture, damask materials, Venetian flooring and with a magnificent facade overlooking a typical Venetian canal, the Rio di Santa Sofia. ... more   less
