“A charming B&B in a lovely area.”
Reviewed April 10, 2014

This charming small B&B has an excellent location, with some of the rooms overlooking a small lovely canal, with beautiful buildings abounding. The rooms are a good value for the quality, particularly in an expensive city like Venice.

We loved staying in Santa Croce, away from the maddening tourist hordes, with the many quiet little lanes and canals, a pleasure to walk in. Close to the San Stae vaporetta stop, a traghetto dock, and the Rialto Bridge.

We opted for a room with a small Juliet balcony adorned with flowering plants, and were glad we did. It was so nice to open the doors in the morning and look out at small boats passing below us while we ate breakfast, which was brought to our room (a nice plus!). The breakfast was good, although not exceptional, and we enjoyed the fresh croissants and cappuccini, and the other items were typical of many small places in Italy.

The bathrooms were sparkling clean, modern and better than average, and while the beds were a little hard, this is often the norm in Italy. I was concerned that our room's location close by a little bridge might have noise when people walked across it, but we hardly heard any noise at all. Well, there was that noisy seagull who one morning perched on a rooftop across the canal, proclaiming his royal eminence!

The service is exceptional. Sabina is very friendly and always ready to assist. And prior to our arrival I had some specialized questions regarding Venice which were well-answered via email by Alberto.

For those with mobility problems, the steep stairs on the higher floors might be an issue, but they are common in Venice, and were do-able for one of our party who has knee problems.

All in all a great place to stay and we'll be back.

We were a couple of friends staying here during the Venetian carnival. The position of the hotel is very good, 10 min. to the San Marco Square in a very quiet area with small restaurants with good food for the wright price. The room was very charming with a small balcony full with flowers and overlooking the canal. The bathroom was a little bit too small, but the one in our friends room was very big. Their room was without canal view but very large. The breakfast was enough for us. The staff was very helpful and friendly. They have told us all we need to know about carnival, transport and restaurants. The whole place is very romantic.

We only stayed one night, Thank God, as an emergency measure. This was the most expensive and the least pleasant of the Venitian B&B we stayed at.
Our room was up several steep set of stairs (most of their rooms are on the 2nd and 3rd floor) and gave onto a small canal and its small bridge, which was charming enough but noisy: Their windows are so thin that you’d think passersby are actually walking across your room!
The room itself was pretty and spotless, but on the whole, it felt as if the owner was skimping on everything (eg: small and mediocre continental breakfast consisting of prepackaged food served in bed, as they do not have a breakfast room / in the bathroom, only one tiny bottle of shower gel and shampoo for 2 persons, etc).
On the positive side, a warm welcome from Alberto who is most charming (as all Italians), but that doesn’t make up for the somewhat pricey and mediocre accommodations!
It could however be better, if they did something about the windows, and if they served a real Italian breakfast with fresh croissants and cappuccino as other B&B do.

Dear guest,

As people may have noticed, we hardly ever reply to reviews, especially to critiques, because we respect the fact that this website belongs to travelers, and not to hotel/restaurant staff.
And although we are fully aware that not everybody can appreciate our B&B, we genuinely believe that a bad review can help us improve our service, as long as it comes from a personal experience.

This time some inexactnesses have been written, most importantly in a tone that doubts our best intentions, therefore we feel the need to respond.

We DO serve fresh croissants and cappuccino for breakfast, as any other guest on this website can confirm.
It is true that we also serve some individually prepackaged food (like cheese, or yogurt).
In our opinion they are safer than fresh dairy products, which would lie in the refrigerator for too long. And since the prepackaged ones are way more expensive, we think of it as being judicious, rather than skimping.

Also, from what you wrote about “most of our rooms” it seems like you have seen more rooms than your own, which is either false, or totally inappropriate.
The true fact is that there are only three rooms on the second floor, and there is no elevator in the building. Perhaps we tend to underestimate our own stairs, given the amount of bridges around the city.

Finally, the windows are indeed somewhat thin, as you wrote.
To be honest, we sometimes travel ourselves, and we have never thought of our city, especially our very own neighborhood as a noisy place, but again, thank you for giving us the chance to remind very very light sleepers that they should consider a different place.

Last but not least, let us say that we both recall our meeting vividly. On behalf of those who work in this business, let me say that we find checking out with a smile, saying everything was ok, and then writing a bitter review, somewhat unfair.

My husband and I stayed here for 4 nights in November 2013. It was recommended to us by a friend who said it was the most romantic little B & B in Venice. We were fortunate to have been given one of the two rooms with a balcony overlooking the narrow canal and a little bridge - very Romeo and Juliet but without the tragic ending! Throughout our stay Sabina couldn't have been more helpful or charming. She emailed us in advance to confirm our arrival time as they are unable to operate a 24 hour manned reception and she also gave us very clear directions on how to find it. We took the water bus from the airport to the San Stae vaporetta stop and it was about a 5 mins walk from there. We were greeted with a friendly smile and a constantly topped-up bowl of delicious wrapped chocolates in reception for guests to help themselves. The B & B has even produced their own guide book and map of Venice with their location and local restaurant suggestions. We ate at a couple of them and they were both excellent. Throughout our stay Sabina answered all our queries (particularly with regards to aqua alta) and looked up information on the internet or made telephone enquiries on our behalf. We were trapped in the B & B for half a day when the very eerie siren alerted us to the fact that the water had risen significantly and flooded the city and as we hadn't packed our wellington boots we had no choice but to wait until the tide turned and the waters started to recede. But I can think of no better place to be trapped than Ca' Bonvicini and it just added to the drama, excitement and sense of adventure that is a holiday in Venice. All the rooms are decorated in traditional Venetian style and more spacious than we had expected and the separate en suite bathroom was more than adequate. Breakfast was brought to our room on a tray each morning and placed on a little side table by the window with two chairs. Although it was a little basic the hot chocolate was delicious but rather frustratingly on a couple of mornings some of the items were missing. The bed was very hard and the pillows and duvet very thin so for me I wasn't able to get a really good nights' sleep. We asked for an extra duvet as the nights were quite chilly but they only gave us a single duvet which didn't cover the whole bed so we had to ask for yet another one. The new cleaner who had only just started working for them wasn't overly efficient and missed a few things. The cistern in the bathroom didn't always fill up properly and could be quite noisy. In terms of location it was about a 5 mins walk to the Rialto Bridge so fairly central. However, being situated in a more residential area surrounded by a maze of similar looking, dark, narrow pathways which weren't always named or shown on the map it was sometimes difficult to find your way back in the dark late at night and on a couple of occasions we found ourselves completely disorientated and hopelessly lost so I would recommend taking a torch. We were given an emergency number to ring if all else failed but thankfully we didn't need it as we always managed to find it eventually and anyway part of the fun of Venice is getting lost! All in all though I would thoroughly recommend this B & B and we are already planning to go back and stay there again later this year.

A little more expensive than other places in Venice but right when you walk in you can see why. The place is absolutely beautiful. Our room was spacious, with old-world decor (recently renovated), complete with AC, a modern bathroom and a window opening up on a tiny balcony overlooking the local canal. Breakfast is served each morning directly in your room. Upon our arrival, we were greeted at the door with very friendly service and all the answers and recommendations needed, they even have a custom map of Venice with their location and restaurant suggestions. They even give you a 24 hour cell number to call should you need anything.

My fiancé and I loved our stay here. The staff was incredibly kind and helpful, both in correspondence before we arrived and when we first checked in. The room was very clean and spacious and the decor felt perfect for Venice. The balcony off of our room was perfect for soaking up a canal view when unwinding at the end of the day. The breakfast was nice and hot and more than enough food for both of us. The location seemed central to walking anywhere you'd like, though you'd be hard pressed to find a bad spot in Venice. This little B&B was really everything we could have hoped for.

It is always a little scary picking a hotel off of the internet. You wonder if the photos of the property real? When was the last time they were updated? Are these really comments from past guests? Well imagine my relief when I discovered that the Ca' Bonvicini hotel in Venice, Italy lived up to their hype!

Once we arrived at the Marco Polo airport, we took a bus out to the island of Venice. We then traveled by water taxi to the San Stae stop and enjoyed a leisurely strolled down cobblestone streets and over short arched bridges, in and out of small squares that housed shops, restaurants and street musicians. After a brief walk, we reached the very unassuming Ca' Bonvicini hotel.

Our host greeted us, confirmed our arrangement and assisted us up the stairs with our luggage (I should note that there is no elevator in this hotel. BUT in all fairness, the only elevator I encountered in all of Venice was in the tower at St. Mark's Square).

Upon entering the room, I was blown away by the fact that it was more spacious than it appeared on the website! In addition to the King-sized bed, there was a divan on one side of the room and a dining table for two on the other. The bathroom was a separate, spacious surprise. Both rooms had windows that opened, there was plenty of storage and to top it off, every morning a continental breakfast containing croissants, breads, cheese, jams, yogurt, coffee, tea and juice was delivered to our room!

We thoroughly enjoyed everything about this hotel. It was located off the beaten path but was surrounded by bridges and squares, shops and restaurants, locals and tourists and just a brisk walk or water taxi ride to anywhere you wanted to go.

Room Tip: Our room was at the off of the landing after the first flight of stairs. I don't recall the roo...
