“A fantastic area far from crowded places”
Reviewed May 16, 2013

We spent almost all nights here where we found the best places to eat, have a drink and just relaxing a bit in Venice. It was hughly recommended by a friend of mine who used to live here so I appreaciated many places to visit while walking and discovering Venice.

“Best area to stay in while visiting Venice”
Reviewed May 14, 2013

Dorsoduro is the heart of the young art scene in Venice. It's also surprisingly quiet at night, with tons of small bridges and little alleyways to wander around. You feel like you're on an island. Very romantic and not very touristy.

Spend an afternoon sipping coffee, or an early evening sipping wine in the Campo Santa Margherita, which is rich in cafes, gelaterias, art studios and heavily frequented by the local art students. Dorsoduro has been the center of the arts and literature scene in Venice for ... well, forever. I first came here a couple of decades ago, after seeing David Lean's film 'Summertime' about two dozen times. That was Venice to me, and the hotel where Katherine Hepburn stayed was in Dorsoduro. In fact, you can visit the spot where she fell in the canal (and where Rosanno Brazzi's shop was located) if you go to the Piazza San Barnaba, where open air boats sell produce and fish every day. Near this same area, you can also find several of the best Carnival mask shops. And there's honestly too many good restaurants to list.

The Accademia bridge spans the Grand Canal at Dorsoduro and from there you can access all the well known sights of the city, particularly San Marco.

If you stay in Dorsoduro, visit Ca Rezzonico, a baroque palace that usually has many great art installations throughout the year. The palazzo itself is a treat for the eyes.

My favorite hotel in Dorsoduro is the Palazzo Stern, right next door to Ca Rezzonico on the Grand Canal. You can just go there in the afternoon if you want to sit on the terrace and have a drink.

This is the best neighborhood to come home to at night - no huge crowds, few tourists. Incredibly romantic.

“Neighborhood across from Santo Marco”
Reviewed April 3, 2013

This was a pleasant neighborhood including the Guggenheim Museum. We found a small shop of the Venetian glass artisan who produced beautiful pendants there at his shop, close to Santa Maria della Salute.

“Great area”
Reviewed March 27, 2013

Sestiere di Dorsoduro is less touristy place where you can observe a real Venetian life. There are also some great squares which you would like to get lost in.
