“Lovely, clean apartment... better for younger groups and couples due to location”

I just got back from a long weekend (3 nights) staying at Ca' Della Bottega apartment. I booked this as a surprise birthday present for my boyfriend so I wanted to make sure we were staying somewhere lovely, private, and romantic. The apartment was very updated and clean. I found it a shame that the kitchen was so small and the beams were quite intrusive when cooking. Both myself and my partner accidentally hit our heads during our stay and found ourselves worrying about it when we were upstairs on that top floor. We enjoyed watching the TV in the evening but found it a shame that it was so far away from the sofas.

Unfortunately part of why I booked this apartment was because I had previously read a review saying that the roof top terrace was one of the best bits about this place as it was like they could "watch the world go by". However our experience on the roof top was quite the opposite. On Saturday night we made homemade sangria and a nice cheese and fruit board and wanted to have a romantic meal and few drinks out on the roof top. BUT it was like experiencing the London riots! I assumed it was all of the students making such a mess and noise seeing as we were staying close to the university. There were bottles being smashed all over the shot and groups kicking bottles - acting like thugs and making it very difficult to relax, unwind and even have a conversation without our attention being drawn to what was happening beneath us on San Margherita Square. And I’d like to add in that I am 23 and my boyfriend 28 (hardly two moany old grumps) but this really bothered us. I'd say this was one of the most disappointing parts of this apartment as it was far from romantic sitting outside in the evening. I’d put this down to the location of this apartment (student district) as when we were out in different areas of Venice in the evening, like the bars facing the Lagoon – there wasn’t the same crowds of people acting like idiots. And you had a much better, relaxing and Venetian experience. So make sure you think about this when booking this apartment.

I found it a little misleading that the apartment was described as set over 3 floors as I'd hardly count walking through your front door and up the stairs as a floor. So really the apartment consists of the floor with the two bedrooms, bathrooms and living room and up the stairs to a roof conversion (lots of low beams) with dinner table, kitchen and the roof terrace.

Although my partner and I love walking and on average walked around 5-8 miles around Venice a day. We both found this apartment too far from the center (San Marks Square). And if we booked to returned to Venice again we'd much prefer to stay somewhere on the other side of the Grand Canal closer to the main tourist attractions, bars, restaurants, churches, museums, historical buildings etc.

To finish off our stay in this apartment on a bit of a low was being disturbed by non English speaking cleaners arriving to clean the apartment 35 minutes before our 11am check out time. We had already told the agency we’d be checking out at 11am and our voucher paperwork also stated 11am. Therefore we found it bad form for the agency not to communicate with the cleaners to arrive after we checked out. We then felt rushed, on edge and it was difficult to explain that we needed more time to two cleaners who didn't understand us. So for anyone looking to stay at this apartment I’d advise you to ask Views of Venice to contact the cleaners and tell them not to arrive until after your agreed check out time. I told a member of Views of Venice that this had happened which we didn't appreciate and their reply was “we’re busy, you know and have lots to do” which I didn't find was right as we’re paying customers who shouldn't have to worry about these things happening. That’s what the agency are there for. Although it’s not a huge deal – it’s just one of those things which makes your stay feel a little less personal.

Our private gondola ride was amazing and this cost €80 for a 30 minutes. This is a must when you're in Venice! Tip: if you’re only in Venice for a few days and want to make the most of your time there, book a hotel or apartment within 10 minutes walking from San Marks Square. It’s very easy to get lost in Venice so this apartment which is a 1 mile journey by foot (should take around 20 minutes) can actually take a lot longer than google maps states - more like double that time. So location is Key when staying in Venice! If I was to book again I’d look for somewhere near to San Marco and if you want a nice view then go for somewhere along the lagoon or overlooking one of the canals! I hope this helps you when deciding where to book for your holiday :)

Ciao Emily
Very many thanks for taking the time to write a review of the apartment and for giving us your thoughts on its good, and not so good, points - your feedback is very much appreciated.
Regarding the top floor (shown in the images and described in the text), it was a pity you found the kitchen small and the beams quite intrusive, and with regard to the mention that the apartment is arranged over 3 floors, we do think it a good idea to point out in the details that the apartment’s private entrance on the ground floor leads to a staircase which in turn rises to the first floor living room as the number of stairs present in a property is sometimes a very important consideration for clients.
It was also a great shame that your enjoyment on the Saturday night was marred by the poor behaviour of certain people in the campo and, while this was beyond our control, it is nevertheless regrettable and I can very much sympathise with you in that it spoilt your plans for a romantic meal with your boyfriend.
It was also unfortunate that you thought the apartment was too far from St. Mark’s Square as many visitors, particularly those who regularly come to Venice or who know Venice well, consider the area around Campo Santa Margherita in Dorsoduro to be one of the most charming, typically Venetian and characterful parts of the city - not as busy and commercialised as the area around St. Mark’s Square but with some of Venice’s most popular attractions (and well-reviewed bars and restaurants) within easy reach including Ca’ Rezzonico Museum of 18th century Venice on the Grand Canal; pretty Campo San Barnaba with its vegetable boat, gondoliers and surrounding eateries; the Churches of the Frari, Carmini, San Pantalon, Angelo Raffaele and San Sebastiano; the fabulous Scuola Grande di San Rocco and its splendid Tintorettos; the Accademia Gallery and Accademia Bridge looking towards Salute, not forgetting the world-famous Rialto fish, fruit and vegetable markets and old-fashioned bacari, and the many other attractions of San Polo and Santa Croce just a short stroll away.
Lastly, please accept my sincere apologies for the overzealous 35 minutes early arrival of our housekeeping staff - I do feel lucky to have such a great team behind me and they certainly do a splendid job of keeping the apartments neat and clean (thank you for your appreciation of this in your review!) but I will certainly take note of your comments and make a point of requesting that they not interrupt or unnecessarily hurry those guests just about to check-out (many guests do in fact leave sometimes well before the 11 am deadline in order to catch early morning flights and trains etc. but I appreciate that this wasn’t the case with your departure and that you should certainly have been allowed to spend that last 35 minutes unhurried and in peace).
With many thanks again for writing in - hoping that we see you in Venice again soon and that you allow us the opportunity of welcoming you back to a VOV apartment and location that is 100% to your liking.
Ciao and best wishes

“Perfect location”
Reviewed July 1, 2014 for a stay in June 2014

The apartment overlooks the bustling Campo Santa Margarita and the balcony is a wonderful place to people-watch especially as the World Cup was in full swing! We loved having our breakfast outside and watch the square slowly come to life. It is beautifully furnished and the beds are large and comfortable. The stairs however are steep and not for the faint-hearted. The apartment needs more lighting but on the whole it was a delightful place to be. We would definitely go back again.
