“Overpriced and Inconvenient”
Reviewed July 26, 2012

Venice was our last stop during our thirty day vacation in Italy. I was pleased with all our lodging selections except Ca del pozzo bed and breakfast. First, the location is not in St. Marks Squre; instead it is located in an old, decaying piazza or campo called San Mauricio. Just a word about garbage collection: in the evening the residents of surrounding apartments take their plastic bags to the center of the campo leaving them on a broken down fountain. Second, the building itself, combination of hotel, apartments and b&b with a dirty foyer off an alley. Third, the climb to the 'third' floor. However, with twenty foot ceilings the third floor is equivalent to what would be the fifth floor in today's construction. Fourth, the noise at night making sleep impossible.
I would never recommend this b&b. Fifth, the exorbitant price of 80 euros per person, per night in cash. Makes me wonder . . .

In Venice please expect exactly what this city is able to offer: it is a venetian spirit, not a town. To be in the middle of this marvel you must accept old houses, hidden-dark streets, to be more or less in an other century. This B&B is a room in a house, as many are in Venice, each level being a B&B or a residence. No AC, no luxury, everything is BASIC. BUT, the location is great. Safe and quiet area, excellent restaurants in the same building or at the corner. WIFI free, breakfast in the room, italian style and... very important: the owner is so special, Aneliise: she waited us in the water bus station.

We recently stayed for 2 nights. The room was clean and reasonably well equipped (lots of clean towels, hair dryer, shower gels etc), the shower worked well and we had a fridge in the room to keep water and drinks cool. The hotel itself was well placed for St Marks Square, but set back enough to be quiet, and was only a short walk from the nearest Vaporetti and Alilaguna stop.

Breakfast wasn't exciting, but it was perfectly adequate (very good coffee), and was eaten sitting outside in a nice outdoor area. The staff were friendly and helpful - I had a minor crisis with broken spectacles, and the gentleman on reception kindly found tools to repair them for me. We would go back again.

Our family of 4 stayed 3 nights in the dorm room, which was cheap and adequate but provided no breakfast, no towels, and required cash payment (easily done with ATM's around). And it's a LONG was up the stairs! Annalisa was very nice and did arrange a free water taxi to a Murano glass factory tour (you need to buy your own vaporetto ticket back). And the location is very good. But there is no air conditioning or window screens, so we had to deal with street noise (usually past midnight) and got all kinds of bug bites (didn't seem like mosquito bites, though we heard some of them whining). Not great for light sleepers.

The place is also not staffed 24 hours, which was an issue for us both arriving and departing. We decided to forego being met at the vaporetto stop (saving our vaporetto tickets for later) and just walked from the Alilaguna stop. Not a bad walk, but no one was there when we arrived. Annalisa left a note with a number, but no luck reaching her. We were lucky to catch someone leaving the building so we could put our luggage in the courtyard and go to dinner--otherwise we would have been stuck waiting for hours or dragging our luggage to dinner. Also, I forgot a bag in the room on our way out to an early morning Alilaguna ride back to the airport. With no staff there we had to bang on the door for 10 minutes and wake up an unfortunate fellow guest who let us back in--otherwise we would have been stuck again!

So you can save some money and make it work, but next time I'd probably spring for air conditioning--or maybe someplace further from San Marco (Venice is just not that big)--for the sake of a good night's sleep.

Room Tip: The room closest to the reception desk seemed very nice and off the street, so probably quieter.

Clean and comfortable B&B, short walk from St Marcs square and Ponte dell' Accademia. To save us getting lost, we were met at the nearby ferry stop and escorted to our apartment by the owners, who even helped drag our heavy bags up to the dreaded staircase (it's Venice, don't expect elevators).
Our shower had drainage issues, and the washing machine wasn't functional. But for a 2 night stay this place suited us just fine.

The emergancy was hers, not ours. Ca Del Pozzo had water damage two days before we arrived, so the owner, Nanni, arranges a small, self-contained "pensione" for us within sight of the Rialto Bridge, and one block from the Rialto markets - a wonderful spot. And it was slightly cheaper than her B&B was to have been.
Nanni met us at the vvaporetto and escorted us to the apartment herself. When we had a small problem or question, she sent a friend around immediately to help. So, good service.
One criticism was the food. As advertised, all breakfasts were supplied, but it was supermarket-cheapest-own-brand packaged food - not very thrilling.
So I can't comment on the facilities of Ca Del Pozzo, but the owner is cheerful and helpful and made our holiday very pleasant. The alternative would have been a cancellation two day's prior - disaster!

I see the reviews on this one are very mixed. It all depends what you want, and you really do need to think about what you're letting yourself in for when you book a bed and breakfast (and that's what this is, NOT a hotel) in the middle of Venice, at these rates, which are very low for what you get.
We stayed in the 4 bed room overlooking "campo st maurizio". The photos on their web site are a bit better than the actual situation, but not fanciful.
First off, Anna Lisa, who was running the place when we visited, was a great help and came to meet us off the vaporetto straight away, The hotel is only 5 mins walk from the "giglio" vaporetto stop and 5 mins walk from San Marco, so this is great value for money just for the position, never mind anything else.
There are 8 flights of stairs to the B&B. No lift. BE WARNED. If you are young and fit, or able to take your time, this is not a problem. The property is very secure and, I think, well run. Breakfast is an interesting mix of pastries, bread, and jam. There is a cappucino maker in the kitchen. Interestingly, no milk, apart from the powdered milk cartridges for the cappucino machine, So, buy your own and plug the fridge in, as I guarantee the one in your room will be switched off when you arrive!!
The view over the "campo" is amazing and room I consider well situated for this reason.
The canal at the side of the hotel is a bit stagnant. If you look at the name of this canal you will work it out! The fishes do their best to eat the mosquito larvae but you MUST take mosquito measures in the room, or you will suffer the consequences! Not easy to find corner shops in venice so bring your own spray or ask Anna Lisa as soon as you arrive.
Water pressure has been commented on. The entire B&B is served by a small, and at time of review, badly wired, BAXI instant heater, so you won't get a bath, but, provided you pick your time right, there is plenty of water for a shower unless you're expecting Niagara Falls. Any problems with any aspect of your stay, at all, ask the staff as they are very helpful and doing their best to impove the image of their B&B. This is the most important thing; the staff will help, with a smile, if you ask.
Remember bells wake you at 7.15am in Venice, and again at 7:30 if you missed the first one!
I would not hesitate to stop there again.
Make sure you confirm your booking, as it causes problems to the owners if you don't.
Oh, there are some restaurants and a cafe nearby. Expensive and not amazing quality. What d'you expect in Venice!
