At the Ca Formosa website a 2 BR apt is advertised with photos. After booking it we arrived and were taken up 4 flights of stairs to 2 regular rooms with 1 bath and then a substandard apt 2 blocks away. The manager said we had no choice as we had already paid. We left and went to another Rick Steve pick - the nearby Hotel Il Piave. We were thrilled to find a warm reception, 2 beautiful rooms, a great breakfast and a wonderful overall experience.

The Ca Formosa exceeded all preconcieved thoughts. The hotel incorporates original features, venetian art, glass and hospitality. Room 303 has a large four poster bed and a shower room. It was extremely clean, the staff were very helpful and it was a short walk from both the Rialto and St. Mark's, very central though quiet location. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay and would have no hesitation in recommending this hotel.

We loved our stay at this beautiful hotel! Breakfast was great. The room was nicely furnished. As with most of Venice, it is hard to find, but worth the effort. Our party had a triple and double room, both of which were beautifully decorated Venetian, glass sconces, terrazzo flooring, et al. The Doge would have been happy here.
We found it to be away from the major crowed areas but close enough to get to all the major attractions easily.
Just a caution, Venice is not a place for those who pack everything or those with walking disabilities. This hotel especially has no elevator and breakfast + rooms were all upstairs.

Nice hotel although there are slight problems. Yes, the hotel is extremely difficult to get to. It took us an hour to find it. The directions on the hotel's website could be better. Clearer directions are at the end of this review.

Upon arrival, the front desk person was not very friendly. She rushed us through orientation and left before we could ask any questions. This was the only time I saw her though and the rest of the staff we encountered were extremely polite. Oh, and you will have to go up 4-5 flights of stairs. We knew this upon arrival but were still dumb enough to bring a large suitcase. Pack light!

As for the room, it was large, clean, and overlooked a canal. The room was decorated somewhat Venetian style although not as elaborate as I would like but that is just my taste. Room had air conditioner.

What was a little odd was the location of the breakfast room. At the top of the stairs from the lobby is the shared restroom. You then enter the breakfast room and the guestrooms surround the breakfast room. It was a bit awkward walking through the breakfast room to the shared restroom while people were having breakfast in the morning. I would be in my pajamas, holding my toiletries, and come out with a towel on my head.

Breakfast and the breakfast room decor was very nice. Assorted breads, jellies, nutella, fruit, coffee, hot chocolate, juice, cereals, sometimes meats, and cereals. Minibar had great options.

We paid 100 euro per night with breakfast included and yes this is actually a good deal for Venice in May. It is very hard to find a good hotel for a good price in Venice so look early!

Directions:

1) Stop at San Zaccharia bus boat station 2) Walk straight through Calle de Rasse 3) At end of street turn left on Provolo 4) then take an immediate right on Calle de Chiesa 5) Take a left on the first street to your left 6) Keep to your right and turn right on the first street 7) You will be walking straight along a small canal and eventually across a bridge 8) You will end up on a small square called Campo Querini Stampalia 9) At the right corner of the square there will be a small street. Enter this street and you will end up at Campo Santa Maria Formosa square 10) Keep to your right and turn right at the bridge which leads to Ruga Giuffa street 11) Turn left at the first street to your left 12) The hotel will be on the left at the end of the street.

There is another way to get there from Rialto Station but I forgot :-(

I stayed in the Casanova room at the Ca' Formosa for 6 nights. I had a pretty wonderful stay there. The area was quiet and I never felt unsafe. It was easy to get a good night's sleep. I received friendly service and the air conditioning worked very well. The last round of steps, leading to the Casanova room and one other, are certainly steep, but you get used to it after a couple of times. The entire building is gorgeous and everything is well kept. My only complaints were the small shower and the floor seemed to need a good sweeping.

We were referred to the Ca Formosa by another hotel that was recommended by Rick Steves. Sylvia, the hotel manager, who speaks English was wonderful in helping us with our reservations and giving us directions to the hotel. Our room was located at on the top floor (4th) of the establishment which did involve climbing quite a few stairs. However it was so charming, clean and the bed was so comfortable it more than made up for the climb. We just considered it a good way to get some extra exercise. The location was perfect. It was about 5 minutes from the Rialto Bridge in one direction and 5 minutes from Piazza San Marco in the other direction. It was nice and quiet and located just off a little square that had restaurants, gelato and a little fruit and vegetable stand. Finally the breakfast had a wide variety of foods including meats, cheeses, breads, fruits, juices, youghurt and cereals. Unfortunately the internet was down while we were there but the European ambience was just the right touch during our visit to Venice. I would recommend this hotel to anyone who is wanting a quiet, convenient and charming place to stay in Venice.

An easy Hotel to find, once you read the map.

We came in by train, and flew out. Where else can you walk from the train to the hotel, then from the hotel to the airport, easily?

The hotel is at the end of small alley, and close to about everything. Our room was at the top on the 4th floor, do not book it if you have big or heavy luggage as the 3rd to 4th floor stairs are very narrow.

The room(s) was quite large, nicely decorated, and the bath was down a short hall, all still within the room. Windows (2) opened to the roof, not much view, but better than nothing.

We asked for and received and incredibley quiet room.

A big plus for us was completely free internet acess in the lobby area. If your want to answer emails, check connections, etc. this was a godsend.
