I and wife were part of group in which 6 of us shared a Gondola . The meandering canals do not give you much insight, but once you reach the Grand canal, the ride becomes enjoyable. The Gondola ride was overall a pleasant and charming as long as we were on the Grand Canal.

Okay, so I read reviews that this was highly over rated, but I was determined to do it anyway since this was my first time in Venice Italy and it was our anniversary. Here's my advice for those who are truly interested. I wouldn't pay to do it again! It was highly OVER RATED and not a bit romantic. First of all there were 6 gondolas to one set of accordion/singer. Yes it was just the two of us in the gondola. We didn't go anywhere near the Rialto Bridge which is what all the movies do. ( You're suppose to kiss going under it ) We cruised through the back alleys of Venice. It wasn't even pretty. Our gondolier didn't even talk to us but he did plenty of talking to other gondoliers along the way. It was only 40 minutes long and we felt we didn't see anything worth our time. No sunset (we were in the back alleys) no beautiful bridges/ buildings ext.. Here's what I would do again: Go to the Rialto bridge area and ask one of them to take us for a ride. Most people were by themselves because there were soooooooo many gondolas available (and this was mid-June) So please don't waste your money like I did by going for a "private evening ride.. But do take a ride in the gondolas even if it's with other people. Maybe your gondolier will be like a tour guide.

All you have heard about this is true it is fantastic. But make sure you pick the right time of the year as it can be very windy at times and rainy as well . Enjoy

Took the gondola just outside st marks square, at €150 for about one and a half hours our guide gave us an impressive tour. Not the cheapest experience but well worth it with pictures etc at the end.

I cant see any other place to post Gondola Rides hence chosen this. I didnt do it with this company or for that matter any company. We were there for 3 nights and when you are in venice, you will notice that there are gondoliers in every canal and they are calling at you whenever you pass with their charming swagger "e gondola Gondoli"! Sometimes its really complicated to make the right choice. We did the Gondola ride on day 2 of our trip around 6:45 or 7:00 in the evening. And before making a choice we had covered a lot of areas on foot so had decided to take one form somewhere in Dorsoduro area.

Its best to take a gondola from a slightly narrow canal that you know is not stinking (BTW there are still many non stinky canals) and negotiate the route with the gondolier before getting on. The prices are controlled so morning to evening the prices are 80 euros per gondola for 40 minutes (doesnt matter if 4 people take it or just 1) and for the sunset its 100 Euros Plus.

So we picked one at the Dorsoduro on a slightly wider canal and asked him to take us to the Grand canal towards the Rialto bridge negotiating various small canals in between. We had carried Prossecco & glasses along and had our tablet for the music. The Gondolier was great and did as we wanted and we had a wonderful Romantic time. Gondola ride is a must when in Venice however choosing it from the right location, making clear communication of your expectations before embarking the ride is a must!
