Not always open with regular hours but I just happened to walk past one day at the right time. A treasure in the Castello District that more people need to visit. Original Carpaccio works in their original housed architecture...stunning!

There are two Carpaccio cycles in Venice. One is the Accademia, along with hordes of visitors. The other is here, with very few visitors, and it is absolutely stunning – and in the building it was painted for. The opening picture, of St George slaying the dragon, is quite extraordinary – full of the remains of previous dragon dinners. What sets Carpaccio apart for me is the detail he puts in – you can spend ages gazing at each one. What's great about Venice is that each time you go there you find something new, and this place was new to me. No photography, says the sign, but if you ask very nicely and don't use flash you might be able to take one picture.

This small dark interior houses a beautiful collection of paintings by Carpaccio. St. Augustine in his Study is a delightful and fascinating insight into a Renaissance study. And the mystical beam of light representing the saint's vision of St Jerome is made even more powerful by the fact that the dog has noticed it too.

This was my favourite experience in our visit to Venice. Only a small room but with a cycle of Carpaccio paintings that match anything I have seen. St George and the Dragon is brilliant with its dramatic action but also gruesome with the human remains of the dragons victims. Not to be missed.

Although San Giorgio degli Schiavoni lies a little off the beaten track, it is well worth making the effort to track it down. You step straight into a smallish, dark, wooden-panelled room lined with a series of paintings by the Venetian artist, Vittore Carpaccio (1472-1526). The paintings illustrate scenes from the lives of four saints, St George, St Jerome, St Augustine and the much more obscure St Tryphon.
This was the headquarters of the Scuola degli Schiavoni or Guild of the Slavs and as St George was their patron saint, he received the lion's share of the painter's attention. St Augustine, on the other hand, is represented by only a single painting, but it is an absolute gem. The saint is depicted working in his study, a room full of wonderfully observed details. St Augustine is accompanied by a small, white dog, which sits on the floor staring at its master. This charming little pooch has deservedly become the most famous dog in renaissance art and is, alone, worth the admission fee.
