This little church is a real gem. Its simplicity sets it apart from many others, but that is deceptive. Take care to mount the altar steps and look at the carved putti round the wainscot. They are quite charming. If your interest is spiritual this is the best place for quit co temptation I know.

Whether you find this by luck or skilful map reading doesn’t matter, it’s worth wandering through the very pleasant area of South Eastern Cannaregio and Northern San Marco and if you stumble across this then so much the better. It wasn’t marked as an attraction on any of the several different tourist maps we picked up but there are plenty of “Miracoli” campos and calles around to tell you when you are nearby. Looks like a jewel box; all of the decoration of St Marks but at a fraction of the size and you could well be the only people there.

This is a beautiful, peaceful church, off the beaten track with very few visitors. Those few tourists in the locality seem to walk straight past without noticing the fantastic pink and white marble exterior. Go inside (3 euros) to get an even better experience. This is also known as "The Marble Church" as it is apparently one of the best existing examples of Renaissance architecture anywhere.

It was built in the 1400s to hold a 'miraculous' icon and is covered throughout in magnificent marble décor, including a fantastic ceiling (wooden I think) divided into many painted sections.

It's worth sitting for a while to examine the marble around you on the floor and walls, and the altar details are exquisite. We thought this was one of the most beautiful buildings in Venice that is overlooked by most tourists. Well worth searching out in a lovely area. Don't miss it!

Exquisite inside and out, rightly described as 'a gem'. Worth sitting down to take in the lovely colour and pattern of the walls and ceiling, then going up to the altar area to admire the intricate filigree of the sculpted marble and mythical sea creatures. A unique whole work of art wwhich should not be missed.
