Owner description: This small island is a bit off the usual Venetian path, but it’s worth seeing. Its Santa Maria Assunta church houses impressive mosaics, its bell tower offers great surrounding views—and it’s home to Locanda Cipriani, a well-regarded restaurant and hotel that played host to writing legend Ernest Hemingway .

This was the third island in a three-island tour from Venice. Murano had the glass blowing, Burano had a piazza and lots of souvenir shopping as well as lace making, but Torcello only had a church that you had to pay to go in and a small museum that appeared not to have much to entice us to pay the 3€ entry fee.

We visited Torcello as part of the Murano-Burano-Torcello tour. The island is deserted. There are only 16 people on it & yet it has a fully-functioning restaurant, basilica, musuem etc. There is a definite mystery in the air. The church has an old world charm to it. Outside, there are figurines scattered around the place. Ahead of the church & the museum, is the canal again & vineyards at the dock. Ensure you do not miss your vaporetto back home as being stranded on the island can be both exciting & spooky.

Leave time from Burano for short vaporetto trip to one of the oldest edifices in Venice. We enjoyed hearing monks singing at the church next door. The byzantine murals and beautiful stone patterned floor of the museum is very interesting in the setting of the old marshes. Watch time - some guidebooks said open til 6 pm and they closed at 5:30 PM. There are no photos allowed inside - so you'll want time to purchase some post cards at ticket office if time allows.

Visiting Torcello and the old church of Santa Maria Assunta from the eleventh century is worth the visit, the byzantine mosaics that decorate the interior are really nice if you reflect when they were built.
