Owner description: Many famous and fascinating islands can be found on this large body of water located between Venice and the Adriatic Sea. Murano, Burano, Torcello
Reviewed December 17, 2013

We visited several island in the lagoon - those, that are reachable by vaporetto. 18 EUR for 12 hour vaporetto (and bus) ticket is not on the cheapest, but there are nice pathways along chanels on these islands, where you rarely meet anyone.
For me, such walk can be much more romatic compared to crowded narrow streets in Venice itself.
We visited Murano glass factories, but these are just small workshops intended for tourists; in their exhibit-shops, amateur like me can not see the difference between real Murano products and those imported from elswhere at 1/10 price.

Murano & Burano touristy with glass/lace shops (beware Chinese fakes!) but unspoilt canal walks lovely esp. Burano with its multi-coloured houses. Torcello very special - it was the first island settled but nearly all the inhabitants left later to found Venice leaving an original 7th century Byzantine church next to a huge cathedral with massive mosaics which I liked far more than St. Marks - and no crowds so there was plenty of time to admire them. Unfortunately the campanile was closed for repairs but the view from it over the lagoon must be stunning. Well worth visiting if only for its ghostly atmosphere.

We took a motor boat tour in the Vivaldi booked with saga cruises. We did a complete circuit of perimeter by water with great views of st marks and arsenale and mainland. Despite the showery weather the views were magnificent and it was less crowded and stressed than what have heard of walking tours. The commentary was fascinating and in excellent English and seating choices were there to suit all needs- inside and outside (top and bottom-brilliant for photos as got nearer shore. We stopped at very pretty Burano -a mini venice with lovely shops and cafes and a canal and chocolate box Tobermory type coloured houses. We had one free voucher each for coffee or wine or soft drink which was handy on boat.

Spoil yourself with a tour with one of Venice's hardy Vaporetti. Leave the city and sailof to Lido,Murano or Burano and see the beatiful city of Venice from the sea!

Be sure to buy some kind of Tourist ticket or even an "IMob"-card;single tickets are quite expensive. This comment is of course most validforshorter travels;EUR 7 for one stop is veeeery expensive!
