5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 22, 2014

A lovely hotel in an ancient building. Full of the charm of Venice. Staff were attentive and courteous at all times. We had a late flight leaving so we left our bags there. The location is perfect. It is near Fondamente Nove, which is a pier and main hub to and from the airport via vaporetto or speedboat and also to the rest of Venice. The Cannaregio area where the hotel sits is comparatively quiet and tranquil, but only 3 mins from the main walkway through Venice and to the Grand Canal. It is in a lovely area of Venice away from the crush of tourists. The garden is delightful to sit in and have breakfast or a drink before heading out in the evening.
Highly recommended. Go here!

We spent 2 nights in the Junior Suite. Large comfortable room with an upstairs nook for our daughter. Only down side was the bathroom was also upstairs. Loved the balcony overlooking the canal. Excellent location and service. We especially enjoyed having breakfast and complimentary Presecco in the beautiful garden. Delightful start to our Italy trip.

Located just off the main drag and for us, a pretty much perfect location - away from the main crowds but close enough to the main attractions.

Staff we were attentive and the hotel is stunning. Our room overlooked the canal at the back of the hotel and was quintessentially Venice.

We stayed for 3 nights in the first floor suite overlooking the canal. This is a double height room with a mezzanine floor for the seating area and wardrobes. The bed is on the lower level in the main part of the room and the bathroom is along a corridor (within the suite) off the mezzanine floor. Overall we had mixed feelings about the advantages of the room over using slightly cheaper rooms on one level, having stayed in a more normal room next door a year previously. On the positive side, the main bedroom was large and had a lot of storage; the bed was very comfortable and everything worked well and was immaculate. On the other hand, the fact that the seating area, wardrobes and bathroom are all “upstairs” is less convenient, particularly if having to use the bathroom at night. The mezzanine/bathroom level is noticeably less well served by the single aircon vent, which is at the lower level, so in practice the upstairs seating is rather too warm (and rather dark) to be of much practical use, as you would not want to sit there for an extended period. All other aspects of the stay were just as good as last year i.e. excellent. The staff are very friendly and helpful with directions, recommendations and incidental services such as tea in the garden; and the range and quality of food at breakfast is delicious. Staying here a second time made us realize what a lovely oasis of calm and quiet it is, rather like staying in the country house of a friend more than a hotel.

Room Tip: Suite is lovely but not sure it offers real advantages over larger rooms.

The Palazzo Abadessa has a working water gate and it is worth every euro to arrive by water taxi. The taxi trip is marvelous , penetrating all the back canals, slipping under the little hump-backed bridges and then arriving at the hotel so comfortably. The staff helped us with our bags and without any delay we were soon settled in our lovely canal-side room with damask covered walls. The big surprise is the huge private garden, lushly green and intimate with creeper covered walls, and tables scattered around. perfect setting to drink the complimentary prosecco or to take breakfast. The breakfast buffet (included in the tariff) is of high quality, with fresh capucinos made to order. With no traffic noise the room was wonderfully quiet and comfortable, with a huge modern bathroom. The only tiny quibble was that the hanging space was a bit limited. The foyer and hall on the first floor are very grand, and yet the hotel retains the intimacy of the boutique hotel that it is. The staff were wonderfully friendly and responsive - never had to wait for assistance, always ready to make a pot of tea or provide glasses for a drink in the garden or give directions The location is perfect, only 3 minutes down a little calle to one of the main tourist paths, close to a vaporetto stop. However by going the other way one can wander the back calles of Canareggio just like a local. This is a perfect venetian hideaway.

Room Tip: The grandest rooms are on the first floor of the Palazzo

This hotel was truly a great experience. Wonderfully comfortable room - a real oasis of comfort after hot days of sightseeing. Our room had a stone well dated 1540, with an inscription that included "Abadessa" - the origin of the name of the hotel. The staff was great, the breakfast was great, the garden courtyard was delightful, I really can't think of anything more we could ask for.

Room Tip: Try the ground floor room with the ancient well.
