The room was just around the corner on a square. The room was large and lively and cool in Venice's summer heat. A short walk from everything you would need and easy to find your way back home being near San Marco and the piers! In an expensive city like Venice this was terrific value. Only real drawback was no free wifi (7 euros for 3 hours).

I went with my boyfriend for a long weekend away. This hotel was perfect. It was clean and cool! The location was just a few blocks away from San Marco Square so it wasn't too noisy but also was close to walk to and then go back to the hotel to cool off. It got a bit crazy Saturday night but it stopped by midnight.

Also it was only a few min away from a supermarket and other tiny shops to get drinks for cheaper than the saint marks vendors.

The hotel had a mini fridge that was perfect to keep drinks cool during the day.

The staff was very friendly and there were no issues with the booking. Perfect for a couple that doesn't want to spend too much.

Room Tip: We didn't have to choose a room but the one we got was right on the street. It may be quieter in...

We arrived at the Ca Del Dose in the early afternoon after a long flight from Phoenix. We took the boat to the nearest drop off point closest to the hotel and while we were not expecting to walk the length we did, we loved it and considered it to be a fun surprise that allowed us to travel over bridges and see the city. The attendants at the front desk were always very friendly and helpful. They gave us travel advice, offered us maps and helped us with the area. I loved the smallness of this hotel and I liked how it felt as though we had our own little apartment in Venice! We had a room on the third floor and were pleasantly surprised at how wonderful the air conditioning was after a sweltering day sightseeing in the middle of July. This hotel was recommended to me by a dear friend of mine and I will certainly recommend it to anyone I know planning on visiting Venice.

I made the reservation for this hotel solely on the recommendations of Trip Advisor reviews and Rick Steves. I knew this was not going to be a four star hotel, and I was prepared for the three bridges, possible steps up to the room, the relatively unattended front desk, pay-per-hour Wi-Fi, a small bathroom, and modest sleeping quarters. What I was not prepared for was having to stay in a room around the corner from the hotel on the ground floor. Although there was a terrace with a small fountain and a table and chairs, it appeared to be accessible from the main hallway. We were both uneasy staying in this room.

There was an older woman at the desk to greet us around 3PM. She spoke no English, but seemed to be very nice and showed us to our room. The room had a small closet for luggage, but it did not have a safe. The bathroom had a tiny shower, toilet, bidet, and corner sink with a small water heater above the sink. I am only 5' tall, but even I hit my elbows on the wall, the sink, the shower door, etc. numerous times. Warning: do not flip the switch near the hair dryer! It apparently turns off the hot water heater (which we didn't realize until hours after taking cold showers). There was a separate hairdryer also in the room. The room was lit by fluorescent lights bordering 3/4 of the room. A small flat screen TV was mounted on the wall, but it was around 6' high--the perfect spot for my husband to bang his head.

The pros of this hotel was the location. Conveniently located between the San Zaccharia Jolanda stop and the Arsenale stop, it is easy to get to San Marco square and the Rialto (without even going through San Marco). The sheets were crisp and clean. The air conditioner was powerful and easy to control.

The cons, in my opinion, outweighed the pros. We were separated from the main hotel, and the square our room was on was filled with counterfeit purse vendors hiding out from local police. It made us very uncomfortable with them watching us go in to our unattended room away from the main hotel. Coming from the Riva, the alleyway to the hotel was usually filled with hundreds of tourists trying to escape the sun while waiting for their boats to return, making it very hard to get to our room. The shower had mold growing in the corners. The room smelled musty and damp. I also saw pictures of breakfast baskets with coffee and croissants in some reviews. We did not have any food items in our room, nor could we access the main hotel because there was not anyone there and we were not given a key.

Room Tip: Stay in the main hotel.

My wife and I primarily spend our vacations out and about exploring and visiting local sites so our sole purpose for hotels is to find somewhere safe, clean, and comfortable where we can sleep and shower in our own private room and bathroom. We look for basic no frills places to stay that are centrally located and affordable.

Ca del Dose met our needs. We stayed in the room on the plaza around the corner from the lobby. Outside our room it was a bit run down (needs painting) but inside the room was clean and comfortable. Although not as central as other hotels, it was only about a 10 minute walk to Plaza de San Marcos. Part of the joy of Venice though is walking in Venice so we did not mind! Breakfast was very simple - basically pastries and coffee/tea in the room.

Despite the plaza just outside our window, it was dead at night and very quiet. However during the day it can become quite active with kids playing in the plaza. There is also a church close by and it's bells can go off very early. This did not happen every day we were there, so they must rotate. However this will probably happen anywhere you stay in Venice. We do not blame the hotel.

The front desk personal were very friendly and willing to help. My only gripe is that there is no free Wi-Fi and the Wi-Fi that is available was quite expensive. Also since we stayed in the rooms around the corner, the Wi-Fi did not reach our rooms. We had to go to the lobby to use it. If I'm paying for the Wi-Fi I would at least expect it to reach my room.

I would definitely recommend Ca del Dose and would probably stay here again if I ever return to Venice.
