“Great Stay”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 4, 2012

What a fantastic location, staff extremely helpful and all English capable. Shops, restuarants and numerous pubs all in close proximity. Once you have accepted that everything in Venice is expensive then this hotel was quite reasonable.

Overall a very pleasing hotel. Lets be clear this is a mid priced privately owned small hotel, and against that its good value for money, comfortable, great location, with a pleasant staff who it seems want to help and ensure the customer has a very enjoyable stay. Its barely three minutes walk from Arsenale Water Bus landing, so I arrived direct from Marco Polo airport by water bus almost to the door, and the next day took route 1 water bus from Arsenale the full length of the Grand Canal on a sightseeing tour; breathtaking! The location is about 12 minutes walk along the side of the Lagoon from Piazza San Marco, which means its a little away from the crowds and quieter without being 'dead'.

Ca' Formenta is a gem in the jewel of Venice, Italy. It is one of the best kept secrets of Venice, and we want to keep it that way. Keep this review under your hat.
European breakfast is served in the entrance corridor of the hotel and at two tables outside the entrance of the hotel. The secret is the view from your table. Your million Euro view extends across the shipping channel and basin to Lido Beach. The cruise ships and everything else on the water and land parade past you. Excellent people watching spot.

During the day and evening, you may return to these tables with the salads, sandwiches, pizza, gelato, dolce, and beverages that you bought down Via Garibaldi at Mejer Bakery.

You are in a typical Italian neighborhood complete with laundry hanging on the lines. In the evening, Via Garabaldi comes to life with the neighbors on the street and in the bars and restaurants. Eat where they eat, and you will enjoy your meal.

Rooms are European small. Bathroom was spacious, but you make your own shower stall in the tub with two doors. To keep the water from flowing onto the floor, I had to make the stall the size of a cruise ship shower. Bathroom has only a ceiling light, no light on the wall next to the mirror. Very difficult to perform personal grooming in your own shadow.

Single beds are bunk size. If I rolled over, I would roll off the bed. Any view of water commands a higher room rate, even a room overlooking the three meter wide canal behind the hotel. Yes you can arrive at this hotel via water taxi directly from the airport. Rooms are air conditioned in the summer and heated in the winter with individual room controls. Rooms are quiet because the immediate area is quiet.

European breakfast is adequate, includes an expresso machine, but no hot entree.

Marco Simonetto, Manager, and Ricardo, Evening Host, are very helpful, patient, and multi lingual.

Room Tip: All rooms are good. Spend as little as you can.

Situated on the waterfront near the Naval Museum, this friendly smallish hotel is only about 10-15 minutes pleasant walk from St Mark's Square. There are plenty of shops (including a nearby Co-Op), cafes, bars and restaurants in the area. The (English speaking) staff are very welcoming, friendly and helpful so we felt at ease as soon as we arrived. Our economy rooms were clean and comfortable, with heating and ventilation, but were a little dark as they looked onto a small courtyard. The rooms have a phone, mini-bar and safe, and an over-bath shower (tip - trap a small towel between the glass screen and bath top to prevent water splashing all over the floor). Drinks can also be bought at reception - a bottle of Prosecco was (I think) about €12.50. The comfortable, firmish beds had blankets and bedspreads rather than duvets, which we are more used to, but it was warm enough to remove some of the bedding. The (included) breakfast was varied and ample - fruit, yoghurts, bread rolls, croissants, juice, cereals (but Italian milk isn't like our pasteurised fresh milk) and as much coffee as you wanted. Tea bags too! Bear in mind that this is towards the eastern end of the island so it is quite a trek from the railway & bus stations and the vaporetti can be crowded and difficult to use with luggage. There are vaporetti stops quite closeby at Arsenale and Giardini. We booked a water taxi to & from the airport, in advance, through Venice Link. This takes you directly to the back steps of the hotel (or nearby naval museum if there is acqua alta and strong winds, as there was for our return trip which involved a boat trip to Piazzale Roma then a land taxi to the airport. It all went like clockwork). We were very happy with the hotel and will use it when we are able to return to Venice.

Situated in a local area but only a short walk from all the major sites. Easy access to a waterbus stop so transfer to & from airport is not a hastle. Room over looked a side canal so was quite quiet at night. Bed comfortable & had no problems getting more pillows from house-keeping staff. Breakfast is buffet-style with a wide variety of choice. Plenty of restaurants & bars on Via Garibaldi.

Venice was really busy and full of tourists but this hotel is the perfect spot to enjoy the city without being within all the hustle and bustle. The staff was wonderful and worked with me to help me find my lost luggage. The room and the bed was quite comfortable. Just perfect.

The hotel is very nice and people very helpful, however. . .
If the hotel is fully book, they offer you an apartment not far from the hotel. Beware this apartment is not up to the same standards as the hotel. Good point, the bathroom is large and new. Now for the rest, we walked into the apartment to find three couches, all with curtains thrown over them to hide the stains, a note, hanging off a cabinet stating the dish washer was broken and dirty glasses in the cabinets. We also found a portable air conditioneer in the living area and a fan in the bedroom. The staircase to the apartmant and the apartment smelled.

We spoke to the manager and all he could say was what do you want for 156 euro.

The hotel was able to put us up for two of the four nights we stayed in Venice, but then we had to stay in the apartment for the balance of our stay. They did put white sheets on the couches and tried to fit them to the couches, took the sign off the dishwasher and washed the dishes. We opened all the windows to air out the smell. My husband leaned against the arm of the couch, only to have the arm fall off

I would stay in the hotel again, but beware of the apartment!
