Locanda Matir is a pretty decent choice if you're on a budget. Stayed only 1 night in January 2013 and it was just fine for spending the night: room was tiny but very clean, and once we figured out how the heating system worked, it was warm as well. Bonus points for the fridge and tea/coffee maker. Breakfast was included in the price and it was very very basic. Staff was great, very friendly and helpful but beware, they're only there a couple of hours a day, this is more of a self-service hotel. We could leave our luggage in the hall after checking out and the staff gave us a code to the door so we could come back for the bags later on - really appreciated that we didn't have to drag the luggage around but at the same time, leaving it out in the hallway didn't feel that safe though ... Would prefer it if someone from the staff was available throughout the day. Location is great - Campo Santa Margerita in Dorsoduro sestiere is fabulous but I suppose I'm a bit biased because I adore this part of Venice (10 min to Piazzale Roma or Piazza San Marco, lots of cafes around, great starting point for exploring the city ...).

Also, two very important things: this hotel has VERY steep stairs (and I mean very; I don't have problems with stairs in general - this is Venice, after all - but these were quite ... interesting) and it can be quite noisy.

All in all, this is a decent hotel though I prefer hotel Tivoli which is near by and offers better value for money (or at least it did back in 2011).

Horrible dirty small pokey rooms with dust and stains everywhere. A/c broken, fridge broken, shower broken, bed rubbish. Breakfast was a joke, toast and a drink, with a bowl of completely rotten fruit!

Worst of everything was the noise! Every night we were kept awake until 3 in the morning with drunk noises local student. Place is located right about busiest place in area and 100 plus people drunk in street etc. terrible. We had to change rooms three times Before giving up. Even with ear defenders in it was very bad. Ruined our trip and returned home exhausted. Owner did not really care about problem and gave priority to Italians. Stay awake from this place and don't male the same mistake we did. Very bad!! We checked in on Feb. 3, and out at 6:45AM, Feb. 5.

Staff is off after 2PM, don't worry, she told you the code in order to open the door.

You have to be strong in order to climb the stairs.

I booked 2 triple rooms for whole 6 family members.

Nice bathroom.

Stayed one night. Room 204 directly above a noisy, smokey bar. Noisy until very late! A/C not working so room became an oven while windows were shut to block the noise and smoke. Actually left the bed to sleep on the bathroom floor to keep cool! Cannot reccomend. Feel like i flushed 150 euros down the toilet! Cant understand why this hotel gets such good reviews!

We arrived after 2 pm and found a note asking us to call a number to get the code for the door. We couldn't get our phones to work, so we asked a staff person in a nearby bar to call for us. We could then go in and found a note with our room key. Charming furnishings, very clean. No staff available on site except during breakfast. Our room, #203, and #204, were above a college-kids' bar that was open until the wee hours. The rooms on the other side, however, have windows over the courtyard and I am sure they would be very quiet. I noted rooms #205, 206, 201 on that side.

Room Tip: Ask for rooms that have windows to the courtyard, not over the bar.

We stayed there for one night and it was the cheapest property for reservation for one night. In the booking was included also a breakfast, wich was not abundant but it was nice. I strongly recommend this hotel to all travelers who are looking for cheap more than decent place to stay at the Venice.

Room Tip: We had the room number 204 and I have nothing to complain about.

I had read the other reviews that complained about the noise at night but decided it didn't matter as I always travel with ear plugs. Lucky me!! I think you need them. Our room was right next to a toilet and our bedheads were on the adjoining wall so it was a little noisy but, hey, who sleeps in when in Venice?? The stairs up to the rooms are very steep but the staff happily helped us with our luggage. It's a very tight squeeze for breakfast and the room can't hold all the guests at once, so if you have to be gone by a certain time, I recommend you get down there early. Great location, but be warned, it can be hard to find!!

Room Tip: Try and stay away from the rooms over the pub!
