Our family of 4 stayed in Cannaregio for 4 days. It really felt like Home to us. Plenty of restaurants, touristic enough for our needs, but away from the tourist crowds. Easy access to every place by Vaporetto with plenty of stops. We bought the 3 days Vaporetto pass and we used it a lot. We felt like locals, there was a supermarket just a few blocks away.. indeed a few bridges away.. with reasonable prices. I would love to stay here again.

Here you have the original ghetto where Jews had to live a few centuries ago and that was the origin of the word ghetto. This is an area in Venice that is not so jam packed with people (mainly tourists who are elsewhere).

Walk from one section to another over bridges of all shapes and sizes. This section offers plenty of shops and restuarants.

This is the main shopping area near the train station and you can buy souveniors and good food. Muslims can find a few halal food places in this area.

The real surprise in Trip Adviser’s Cannaregio email was your initial photo, which we immediately recognized as the Trattoria Misericordia, one of our favorite restaurants in Venice. My wife and I had lunch there just a few weeks ago during the same trip we stopped at Max Canova’s art shop in his new Castello location. I am sending along a photo of the Trattoria’s shiny new awning. Food was just a good as 3 years ago and the wait staff is so friendly and patient with my imperfect Italian. Our waiter who spoke perfect Italian and English, was actually Egyptian. He works at the Trattoria during high season and then returns to Egypt. We prefer to sit along the small quiet canal the restaurant faces. Other families at lunch included tourist parents, children and their grandparents, 2 young recently graduated American women and a large group of Venetian fire-fighters still in their uniforms. We all sat along the canal enjoying the food and quiet atmosphere. Did I mention the food is wonderful?
