Owner description: Rival to Castello for bragging rights as the largest of Venice's six sestieri (boroughs).

The real surprise in Trip Adviser’s Cannaregio email was your initial photo, which we immediately recognized as the Trattoria Misericordia, one of our favorite restaurants in Venice. My wife and I had lunch there just a few weeks ago during the same trip we stopped at Max Canova’s art shop in his new Castello location. I am sending along a photo of the Trattoria’s shiny new awning. Food was just a good as 3 years ago and the wait staff is so friendly and patient with my imperfect Italian. Our waiter who spoke perfect Italian and English, was actually Egyptian. He works at the Trattoria during high season and then returns to Egypt. We prefer to sit along the small quiet canal the restaurant faces. Other families at lunch included tourist parents, children and their grandparents, 2 young recently graduated American women and a large group of Venetian fire-fighters still in their uniforms. We all sat along the canal enjoying the food and quiet atmosphere. Did I mention the food is wonderful?

Take time to explore Cannaregio - ut is quieter than many parts and, I suspect, a glimpse of real Venice

Cannaregio is now a bustling busy area with an ever increasing number of bars and restaurants springing up to cater for the increasing numbers of tourists. Hard for a new comer to find great local restaurants like Al Timon, Osteria Bea Vita, Osteria Da Rioba & Paradiso Perduto to mention a few brilliant restaurants. Book if you want to sit outside or guarantee a meal.

Nice part of Venice with lots of cafes, restaurants and shops. Easy to access via Rialto Bridge or vaporetto stops.

Worth visiting if you have time; take the water taxi. There aren't as many people here. You will want to visit the Jewish Ghetto. Somehow I didn't realize that the Nazis took Italian Jews to the camps also. There is a wonderful wall to visit, very sobering of course. Interesting very well guarded by soldiers with guns.
Be careful, easy to get lost and not find the square.
