From reading up on the Cannaregio district of Venice we expected more of a laid back Venice. While strolling through this area we found as many tourists and crowds as in other parts of Venice. There were still touristy shops but also shops for the locals in the way of delis and grocery stores. We were glad we visited this area because all of Venice has surprises around every corner.

We absolutely lived to walk around the streets if Cannaregio.

While walking, for our delight we found a Kosher Bakery where I honestly ate the best apple strudel of my life.

Give it a try if you have time and explore. We'll worth it.

We stayed in this area at the Carnival Palace and we were so pleased that we stayed in this location and also this hotel. Cannareggio is much quieter than the San Marco area of Venice. You can walk from San Marco square to Cannereggio and expect this to take about 20 -25 minutes its an easy walk, and plenty to see along the way, beautiful buildings, shops, cafes and restaurant's. One can get a bit lost along the walk ways and paths there are sign on buildings indicating the way,and also the venetians are very helpful with directions. I must say though that when in Venice one needs to "get a bit lost" as you will come across many interesting places and the softly crumbling fascades of shuttered houses. If you choose to go to Cannareggio by Vaporetta [a water bus] if you get off at Tre Archi stop or the Guille stop this will get you into this area. One area of Cannareggio worth visiting is the historic Ghetto area, the history of this area goes back to around 1516. The San Marziale is a baroque church which has ceiling frescos.
There are many very good restaurant's in this area, the markets that are set up in the area are also worth walking around.

Quiet pathways and canals. No crowds and seeing where the locals live. Lovely area. Totally different from the tourist attractions.

This area is only a short walk from the Rialto yet is quiet and friendly. We stayed in a B&B here and found it a perfect part to wander around at night, with several much more reasonable eateries filled with Venetians rather than tourists.
