Our hotel was in this region ( Boscolo dei Dogi) and we consider ourselves very fortunate in having booked to stay in such a wonderful part of Venice.....totally unspoilt, quiet, relaxing and a great introduction to this marvellous city. We stayed just along the canal from the church called Maria del Orta, a beautiful church with some wonderful paintings bt Tintoretto. Just 2.5 euros to enter, and well worth the visit. The Jewish Ghetto is also very close to this, but in the opposite direction. We would return to this area and stay without a doubt, and if you are able to walk, it takes only about 30-40 minutes to find your way to St Marks Square or the Rialto area.Several nice little cafe,s for morning coffee or early evening prosecco are also to be found...give them a try!

No tour groups here! A real surprise, great to wander the streets and mingle with the locals. Jewish Ghetto worth a visit. Many non touristy shops to browse

Cannaregio seems to be inhabited more by locals than tourists, our apartment was at the side of a small canal near a local co-op and wine shop perfect for shopping. We love having the chance to sit in a cafe and listen to people talking and going about their daily routine.

After a busy time in Venice seeing the main sights we decided to come away from the top attractions and have a stroll through the Cannaregio area in the northern part of the city. My wife was particularly keen to browse the shops and small cafes and restaurants along Rio Tera San Leonardo so we spent a couple of hours just drifting. The area was beautiful and the amenities variable and plenty. It was nice also to get away from the more congested areas and take some time to just absorb differing areas of Venice. My wife also had the opportunity for some retail therapy which seemed less expensive than the more popular areas. I really enjoyed the more relaxed feeling of this area. It is not far from the St Lucia train station either, accessed across the beautiful Ponte Guglie.

Top left corner of Venice island...really fascinating place, where you won't get ripped off when it comes to food and drink. Not many tourists here...mostly for the locals, as you'll find when you visit some of the eateries, which are atmospheric, busy, frantic, and, yes, a bit noisy...but that's part of the fun here.
