“A wonderful week at Ca' Pisani, Venice, Italy”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 23, 2013

This is an outstanding hotel. The staff are extremely friendly and helpful beyond expectation. The food in their restaurant is very good and not expensive. The free breakfast is terrific. Their location near the Accademia bridge puts you a short walk away from the vaporetto stops. It is easy to get anywhere in Venice from this hotel, either by foot or boat. The mattresses were too hard for me, but this is a personal thing. I would not hesitate to stay there again.

Situated in Dorsoduro near the Accademia bridge, away from the bustle of San Marco, Ca' Pisani is an oasis of calm. The staff are friendly and helpful; the rooms beautiful (do not stay here if you are looking for typical Venetian) and the breakfast excellent. Better than all that though is the location: get the Alilaguna in from the airport and it's possible to reach Ca' Pisani without crossing a single bridge (a real bonus with luggage), it's easy to get to almost everywhere on foot and there are several handy vaporetto stops to make getting about really easy.

Ca' Pisani's location on Rio Tera Foscarini cannot be beat. It is a straightforward 5 minute (or less) walk from the Accademia or Zattere vaporetto stops. Zattere is also a stop for the Alilaguna airport boat shuttle (Blue Line) so your luggage-laden journey to and from the airport will be short and easy, particularly as there are no bridges to cross (something that should never be underestimated when it comes to Venice)! There are also nearby ATMs: one on RIo Tera Foscarini between the Accademia vaporetto stop and the hotel, and a few more along the Zattere.

We found the staff to be helpful with just the right amount of friendliness and our room was clean, quiet and spacious. The breakfast buffet was laid out by 7am (the lady in the breakfast room that others have mentioned is still there) and included cold meats, fruits, cereals, pastries and a couple of warm dishes. Although there was a wide selection, most of the choices did not vary daily, except for the pastries and occasionally, the fruit. Consider yourself warned: if you liked that day's pastries, be sure to eat your fill because you might not get the same ones the next day!

The one quibble we had with this hotel is that a few of its design decisions are impractical and took us a bit of getting used to. For example, the pullout shelf that functions as a desk is a lovely idea except that in order to turn off the desk light, you have to push the shelf back in, which means of course that you cannot leave items on the shelf if you want the light off. After a long day of sightseeing, the first thing we wanted to do was drop our things and flop into a chair, it took us awhile to remember not to drop our things on this shelf because we would only have to clear it away later in order to turn the light off!

Another example: The curtains in our room consisted of several slim pieces of fabric that needed to be lined up _just so_ if we wanted to properly close them. This meant that instead of being able to swish the curtains shut in a snap, I was constantly having to fiddle with the fabric pieces to make sure that all gaps were covered. There was a switch that controlled black-out blinds but lowering them took just as long.

It was things like these that prevented us from immediately feeling right at home in Ca' Pisani. We do appreciate intricate detailing and the idea of a design hotel (we have stayed at several before). However, we'd like to suggest that design should always take a backseat to practicality and comfort.

That said, Ca' Pisani has many positive things going for it, and if you're willing to put up with a few design quirks, do consider it for your stay in Venice.

dear Tdav,
thank you very much for your nice review. I am really glad you appreciated so many aspects of the hotel, including its location, friendliness of the staff, room and its clenliness, and breakfast.
regarding the design quirks you mentioned, I would like to underline that on the small table of the silver leaf cabinet it is not possible, in any case, to put big and/or heavy things due to its size and the fact it has a mirror surface. I agree that it may be sometimes not very useful considering that you have to close it to switch the light of the cabinet off, but at the same time it is very rare that guests put things on the small table (whose sizes may be approx 30 x 30 cm), putting objects on the cabinet itself, or on the bed tables.
as for the curtains, it is the first time someone points out some difficulty in closing them because there are more choices in how you can arrange the various slim pieces composing the curtain itself.
last, but not least, breakfast is quite rich and is appreciated because we have some of the food which is the same everyday, but other stuff, as the pastries, tend to change to give more options to our guests.
all this said, the staff and I would like to thank you again for the comments which we will use to improve our service, and really hope to have the pleasure to welcome you again in the future.
all the best,

This hotel suffered a bit by comparison with the Novecento, in which we'd spent two nights prior to coming here for two nights, including our anniversary (which was why we'd chosen somewhere 'special'). Unfortunately, we didn't this 4-star place nearly as much as the cheaper (better value) 3-star we'd left behind. It's impressive, but does not have a welcoming atmosphere and feels rather 'style over substance'. The staff we encountered were polite but nowhere near as warm and helpful as we'd experienced in our other Venetian hotel on the trip. The room was large and stylish, but not cosy and the technology utterly baffling or unnecessary - there seemed no way to control a/c or heating from inside the room (a call down to reception was required every time and we struggled to get it to a comfortable temperature) and the wide variety of switches in bathroom and bedroom made even turning off a light something of an adventure. Breakfast was uninspiring (we missed the notably good breads and pastries of the Novecento) and staff had a tendency to start cleaning tables, including spraying with pungent cleaning spray, next to breakfasting guests. Housekeeping started cleaning the room at 10.30am, meaning we interrupted them upon return from breakfast (which is served until 10.30). The bath, as well as the shower (in keeping with the general hi-tech specs) had an adjustable temperature dial, but we couldn't get anything other than lukewarm bath water on our first day - a problem which was rectified by day two, but was annoying at the time and unexpected in a hotel of this calibre. A kettle and tea bags/instant coffee was provided on each floor, which I appreciated - but, again, the 3-star we'd just left managed to provide a proper coffee machine and fresh millk, rather than instant and UHT. If we'd come straight to Ca'Pisani, maybe we'd have been wowed, as it was we spent the first 24 hours rather missing the Novecento. If you like slick technology and design, this could well be for you, but we decided we'd rather have a cosy atmosphere and friendly service. Positives: the location is great, as we much preferred Dorsoduro to the St Mark's area - there are some wonderful little bars around the corner - and the front desk had recommended - and booked - Riviera as a suitable restaurant for an anniversary dinner, which was absolutely fantastic, so we appreciated that (as a 'ps', I did notice - though didn't particularly mind - that the hotel didn't comment or mark the event itself, only because other hotels have done in the past and so I'd assumed a good hotel will probably try to take note of a birthday or anniversary for a guest).

dear Keentravelplanner,
I read your review with much attention and then had to talk with the staff involved to be sure to give you a proper answer.
I will try therefore to answer to all various points you underlined in your review:
1) I know Novecento and it is a very nice play to stay, but I think it is not correct to compare us with them because we are very different under many aspects, so it would be like comparing a sheep with an elk, or an elephant with a giraffe,
2) very sorry to read about the not so friendly atmosphere because warmth and kindness of the staff in general and particularly of the reception is pointed out by almost all the guests writing a review on Trip Advisor,
3) heating/air conditioning can be controlled from the room (3 degrees lower and higher that what there is actually in the room), otherwise you should call the reception,
4) turning off a light is an adventure? sorry, it sounds a little bit of an exaggeration, and there is a 24 hours service which can always help you in case of similar doubts,
5) again, breakfast is one of our best points, so I was sorry to read your comments. to be honest, in this case for us it would be much better to know WHY it was not inspiring. for sure there is always something to learn, under all aspects, but 'uninspiring' unfortunately is not very good under the point of view to give us a good suggestion. I am sorry for the cleaning spray which was used by a new person who started working with us only a few days before your stay and was not trained on that aspect. I apologise, and now he knows,
6) as for housekeeping, usually the maids do not start their job if there is a 'do not disturb' sign on the door. i honestly have no idea about what time you were usually having breakfast, but unless it was very ealry, if the sign is not on the door, the maids start their job,
7) the problem with the water could be fixed by our maintenance staff, if we only knew it: in a 29 rooms hotel, in fact, it may happen that a few things do not work perfectly and need to be fixed, but we need to be informed, and usually showers are done ny guests and not the staff, so for us it is not easy to be aware of it!
8) the kettles on each floor of the hotel have been added approximately one year and a half ago as a 'plus' because we do have a proper bar wich is open from 7 am to 10 pm. we are now in the process of changing a few things, in any case, but even when the bar is close the night concierge can serve basically anything, if requested,
9) the staff usually pays lot of attention to birthdays, anniversaries etc. etc., so what probably happened was that - his fault - the guy at the reception did not realise you were celebrating that precise night. i aologise for this, too.
well, all this said, i am sorry you did not enjoy your experience, and I would love to have the chance to welcome you again next time you are in Venice.
all the best and thank you again for the comments,
marianna serandrei

We loved the hotel: Well located near the Accademia bridge water taxi/bus stops, but away from the noise and the crowds. Lovely restaurants within easy walking distance in any direction. The front desk staff was friendly and knowledgable, helpful. Service staff efficient and for the most part, pleasant. Very nice breakfast, too. Rooms were larger than one expects at this price point, and after walking around antiquity all day, returning to the hotel's modern decor was somehow refreshing. Very large bathroom with good amenities. Comfortable bed, lots of storage space. Would not hesitate to stay here again.

From arrival to check out we couldn't have had more helpful staff! Having been to Venice before and stayed closer to the buzz of St Marks, this really was a welcome change - close to everything but away from the bustling crowds. Ca' Pisani is a beautiful small Art Deco hotel directly behind the Accademia in the Dorsoduro district and a minute's stroll from the beautiful Zattere area which has views over the Guidecca Canal. For the vaporetta, it couldn't be more convenient and we should know ! We went to celebrate a friend's 50th birthday at the Danieli and so come evening time, myself in heels and my husband in full kilt regalia [ lots of looks ! ] we only had a minute's walk to the Accademia vaporetta stop and got off directly opposite the Danieli. We were able to hop on and off the vaporetta all weekend and it was no distance to return at night .We only selected a normal double room and although no view, the room was very spacious with a large ensuite. The attention to art deco detail in the room and indeed throughout the hotel was perfect. Everything has been thought out so well. Fresh crisp linens and a very comfortable bed. There is a super selection for breakfast to set you up for the day - fresh fruit salads, cereals, cakes, local patisseries and scrambled eggs with Italian ham or sausage - and all very well presented. This area also serves as a cheese and wine bar in the day, and cakes and tea for the afternoon if you are staying local. A very welcome turn down service at the end of a day's sightseeing, and on each floor is an ice machine, and tea and coffee selection. At the very top is a delightful rooftop terrace which I would imagine is beautiful on a balmy evening for a night cap! All in all my husband and I were extremely pleased with our choice of Ca' Pisani and would definitely recommend it to others as well as return ourselves in the future. A big thank you to all the staff - we loved every minute of our stay in your beautiful city.

Room Tip: We were on the first floor and on a side street. I imagine the front of the hotel or near the top fl...

My wife's words but true. Right near the Accademia bridge and the Peggy Guggenheim the hotel is easy to find and it is easy to walk or take the Vapporetto to anywhere you might wish to go. The rooms are sweet, and if you are staying the junior suite it's easy to stick a kid in the anteroom. Also, although they have single room beds, they can de divided if you are traveling as two and not a couple. My teenage children found this acceptable in room 32. Breakfast is included and is fine. The beds are comfortable and the staff is quite helpful. There is free, high quality Internet and access to a gym across the road. More important than any star ratings, I would definitely come back!
