“Great Hotel !”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 19, 2012

We stayed at the Ala Hotel four days in October. It exceeded our expectations for a 3 star hotel. It has a very good front desk staff. Ala's location was two minutes walk to the water taxi stop, ten minutes to St. Marks square. The room we had #275 was large, well appointed and very quiet overlooking the canal. The hotel has a bar and very good breakfast buffet. Actually the hotel was memorable where the rest of Venice is a tourist trap.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the canal side..it will be quieter except for an occasional gondolier.

The hotel is right off the Vaporetto (water bus) Line 1 stop SM Giglio and close to San Marco square. The room was small with old furniture/bed/etc.. The breakfast was fine. The man issue we had was the management recommended a Murono glass tour that "the hotel was providing free of charge." DO NOT GO!!!! It is a scam/sale pitch. It is not a tour of how they make the glass but a gallery where a salesman follows you around for over an hour pushing you to buy something. We didn't fall into the trap, therefore we didn't get dropped back off at our hotel we got dropped off at the other end of Venice and had to try and figure out a way back to our hotel. Stephano (the hotel manager who sold me on this tour) said the taxi would bring us there and back whenever you want. This ruined our entire trip to Venice as we only had one full day to explore and spent hours trying to get back to our hotel and San Marco square. I complained to the hotel but I suspect they are receiving some sort of "kick back" from the gallery to send people over and the hotel said we should have gotten dropped off at least at San Marco square. Overall, the hotel management is shady and should never put their guests in this type of situation without all the facts.

We stayed 5 nights in a superior room. Room was ok, we had a view overlooking the canal. The room was quite small but it was clean and we didn't spend that much time there so it was fine. There was plenty of hot water and the room was cleaned daily. Breakfast was good with lots of choice. I found the staff on reception to be helpful and they confirmed our return water taxi with no complaint. The location of the hotel is brilliant, a short walk to the Giglio vaporetta stop and a few minutes from the Teatro de Fenice. Piazzo San Marco and shops are a few minutes walk in another direction. The compromise for small rooms is well worth it as the price was quite reasonable and the location is fantastic.

Room Tip: we stayed in a superior room which was quite basic, so i wouldnt advise going for less than this

Stayed here during a short business trip as I wanted to be near the centre. It met my expectations based upon TripAdvisor reviews. Comfortable and very clean room and bathroom, a little small as sometimes is the case for city centre hotels (Paris examples are endless).
Arrived much later than planned 1:15 am. due to underestimating the water boat time from the airport to Venice. Fellow travelers watch out this is an interesting and good value ride into town but takes an eternity (well about 1.5 hours). Therefore arrived at San Marcos too late to take another two stop water bus ride as advised by the hotel literature. Had to consult laptop and Google maps in the early hours to figure out my walking route - only ten minutes - but challenging to a tired traveler in the early hours. Hotel doors sensibly locked but it didn't take long for the porter to respond to the bell. He was very helpful and carried my bag despite the unsociable hour. In summary nothing outstanding but fair value in a traditionally expensive tourist trap.

This hotel is in a great location within an easy 50m walk from the Giglio vaparetto stop. If you arrive by water taxi, the hotel has an entry right on the small canal behind the hotel. We had booked two deluxe rooms but as we arrived late (7pm) , we were frst given two superior rooms and after complaining the reception staff insisted that they were deluxe rooms.. but luckily before we unpacked, they "found" one deluxe room so one of us could move. The next day, they gave us our second deluxe room and the management sent us a bottle of prosecco. There is definate difference in deluxe rooms and superior rooms so be aware when you check in, if you have paid for a deluxe room. We had deluxe rooms 301 and 314, both facing the square. They were both nice size double rooms with classic antique furnishings. The only problem with the rooms was the limited storage space for clothing (no drawer space as drawer stuffed with extra pillows) . The hotel has a very nice breakfast room and the continental breakfast buffet was very good. It included everything from scrambeled eggs to cerealsa and cold cuts etc.. The hotel staff was friendly and helpful after they the resolved room problem. The location of the hotel is also superb for La Fenice opera house. An easy 5 minute stroll. Considering the hotel prices in Venice, this is not a bad choice.

Room Tip: Pay for the deluxe room and make sure you get one

After the Academia priced themselves out of our market, we decided this is the place to stay in Venice at a reasonable price. It is well located, just off the path between San Marco and the path to the Accademia bridge. Ask for one of the rooms with a balcony (which overlooks the adjacent canal). A lot of the shops to visit are along the street back to San Marco. We really recommend the shop directly across from the hotel for a good selection of reasonable glass or if you really want some really nice glasses try the Morretti (serious designs, no trips to the islands) shop about ½ back to the way to San Marco. Back to the Ana, it is a nice pleasant place to stay, nice staff, and they will arrange for a watertaxi to pick you up at the hotel to take you to your final destination. Some water taxis from the airport will also drop you off at their door, others at the vaporettio stop. The breakfast is hectic, the lounge is great place for a drink (assuming you have already visited Harry's) after walking around all day.
