“Loved watching the Gondolas drift below our window..”
Reviewed October 13, 2011

Hotel Ala was so easy to find, which is a plus when staying in Venice. We arrived by Vaporetti. Our room was on the second floor. Bed was comfortable and all you would need in a room for a two night stay or more was there. Fav thing was hearing and seeing the gondolas drift by with the solo singers and piano accordians and seeing the happy people floating by. The staff were good and when the printer didnt work to print our boarding pass they let us use the office. Breakfast was plentiful, there seem to be a lot of American Tourists more than any other. Excellent location.

Room Tip: Definitely a room over looking the canal. When in Venice, a must IMHO.

This best western property is a bit worn and has losted it's glitter. Yes it has an excellent location (west of the St. Marco's Sq.) to the central Venice's major attractions and transportation modes, but it is actually located away from the Grand Canal, adjacent to a very unassuming small canal alley and fronting rather mundane small piazza. Furniture and assessorties in the public spaces and the rooms are need replacement or renewal. In our superior canal bedroom, the bath flacets were leaking, sinks/shower drains slow to drain, and tile joints/grout were showing signs of mildew, etc. The breakfast each morning was excellent...very complete and having a wide variety of various foods, juices, etc. The front desk staff was excellent. I would tell everyone to reseach further at other establishment before finally choosing the Ala...the photos at TA's seems to complement this establishment more than it really deserves.

Room Tip: Upper floors facing the canal (a very narrow small canal)

We highly recommend this hotel. It is one of the hotels where you can get off the public “water bus” (vaporetti) at the Santa Maria Giglio stop and take your bags up one short alleyway to the hotel without having to drag them over any bridges. It has a great location close to St. Mark’s square (10 minute walk), The Opera House (5 minute walk), and Accademia Bridge (8 minute walk).

The staff was most good and helpful. Breakfast included and was great – a wide variety of meats, cheeses, fruit, cereals, bread and rolls, coffee, juices, etc. A very good “American Bar” with personable and helpful staff. A lot of travellers found their way to this bar.

Stayed September 26-30 2011 with two of our friends of 30 years.

We stayed at hotel ala for 1 night before we left for a cruise. It was a very pleasant experience! The rooms were a good size, however it was a little pricey! But that's just Venice I think. It was kinda hard to find but after we found it it was very centrally located. Front desk were friendly and helpful. Breakfast was also very good. Would stay there again!

Great location - so close to St Mark's Square - just a five minute walk but far enough away not to be noisy or completely surrounded by other tourists!! Great room and many thanks for the free upgrade we had due to celebrating our wedding anniversary. Our room overlooked the canal at the back of the hotel and every evening as we were getting ready to go out we were serenaded by the passing Gondoliers. Room was spotlessly clean, bathroom a good size with a bath (we were only expecting a shower), the beds were a tad hard but we slept fine and things like that are always going to be down to personal taste so not a problem. Breakfast was fantastic with a huge choice ranging from pastries to cheese, meats, cereals, yogurts and scrambled eggs. The coffee was SO good!!! We didn't really have a need to interact very much with the staff but they were always polite and answered our queries immediately. Many thanks for a really lovely stay in a very beautiful city.

Room Tip: Not sure what the standard rooms are like so suggest going for the superior!!

Perhaps part of my comment is that I had just arrived three hours late in Venice via the Orient Express but I had expected better considering that the hotel would have been advised of our lateness.

We felt that the reception staff were surly and not really interested. We had not had any food for hours and needed something light like a sandwich. As the hotel had no restaurant we looked in the neighbouring squares but only full meals were being served. The hotel bar had one ham and cheese sandwich made that morning - it was now 10 pm!! We do not eat meat so refused. The hotel at a second request told us that nothing was available only breakfast food but no offer was made to feed us some of it...bread, cheese etc.

The room was quite small.

The hotel is situated in a great location. Just out of the really busy area but very close so you can be in and amongst it very quickly. We found it the perfect base to explore Venice with plenty of slightly cheaper places to eat in the evening.

A tip: make sure you get the right water taxi from the train station to drop you off at the Santa Maria del Giglio stop which is right by the hotel. Not all of them do. If you end up going to Vallaresso or San Marco stops it is a 5 minute walk through busy narrow lanes and a couple of bridges with steps to negociate. Not that arduous but worth avoiding if you can.

Room Tip: We were lucky to have a room that looked over the small canal at the back of the hotel which made us...
