A wonderful hotel in every way. This was our third visit to Venice and by far the best hotel of all situated on a small canal off the Grand Canal in the Dosoduro area. The generous size room had two small balconies overlooking the canal.[only two have balconies] The 18thC hotel is decorated with wall and ceiling fresco's and very comfortable furniture . There is only one easy flight of stairs but the manager took up our baggage anyway.Excellent breakfasts of cereal, fruit. eggs ,ham and pastries were enjoyed in a lovely courtyard [ for all guests]with a small window to the canal. You can arrive in style via a private water taxi from near the Stazione right into the canal door of the hotel but is a lot more expensive than the crowded but exciting trip along the Grand Canal by public vaporetto[water bus] The English speaking hotel staff were very courteous and helpful. Nothing was too much trouble. It was an easy 100 meter walk from the Grand Canal vaporetto stop ,Ca Rezzonica , and also close to the Accademia Bridge and the delightful Peggy Guggenheim Museum of art, An short stroll away is nice little piazza with St Barnaba's church, shops and eateries and a fruit and vege barge on the canal. A German guest persuaded us to stay an extra day for the Regatta with 2000 oared boats of all shapes and sizes with crazy entrants from all over Europe leaving from San Marco. It was a long walk to the best vantage point, Canal di Cannaregio where they all crowded in from Burano on the way back to San Marco. not too crowded to sit canalside with a glass of wine and cheer them in. What a hoot! Well worth the extra day of sunshine and laughter. We were lucky the hotel could accomodate us in a different room, still very good. We can't speak highly enough about San Barnaba and its staff. We were sad to leave, will return to Venice and will look no further for hotels -Locanda San Barnaba will be it in future. 4 star at 3 star prices. Lonely Planet regularly recommends it too.
- Official Description (provided by the hotel):
- Experience a warm welcome in a 16th century Palace, where the enchantment and magic of Venice are complemented by the modern conveniences required by even the most exacting clientele. An architecturally sensitive restoration has brought back to life serene splendor of the era of which this building is an admirable example. Each of the fourteen rooms has a story to tell: the lover's nest, the philosopher's refuge, the artist' s studio, the playwright' s chamber, where echoes of his muse still linger. The "Locanda San Barnaba" is located in the center of the city, between Accademia Gallery, Piazza San Marco and Rialto Bridge, easy to reach from Piazzale Roma or "Santa Lucia" Railway Station by Vaporetto n° 1 (Ca' Rezzonico Stop). ... more less
