“Worthy of the Serenissma”
Reviewed January 29, 2013

This is a jewel of a hotel that is both architecturally splendid and managed by warm and helpful staff. We could hardly believe the reviews we read before choosing the Locanda San Barnaba, but they proved to be true. Our room was spacious and well-thought out. Breakfast fare was varied with plenty of healthy choices. The location is quiet, central and far more interesting than the area around San Marco; it is a charming neighborhood within walking distance of all the main sites and with plenty of small restaurants frequented by locals. As they did for other reviewers who had early morning departures, the hotel staff opened the breakfast room for us at 4 am, and arranged for a water taxi pick-up that went very smoothly, relieving what could have been stress and discomfort at our vacation's end. We will surely stay here again and probably very soon.

Room Tip: Our room overlooking the small canal and courtyard was very quiet.

I can't say enough good things about Locanda San Barnaba. As other reviewers have mentioned, the location is ideal: far enough from the major sights to avoid the throngs of noisy tourists, but so convenient for walking or a vaporetto ride. In fact, its accessibility to the Ca' Rezzonico vaporetto stop makes it really easy to take the water bus from the Venice airport. The rooms are really spacious. There is now wireless internet access in the common areas. The atmosphere -- a 16th-century palazzo is elegant. The breakfast featured the best croissant we had in Italy, plus cheeses, meats, fruit salad, juices, breads and made-to-order cappuccinos or other coffee drinks. The staff was so accommodating, calling restaurants for reservations and contacting theaters for ticket information. They even called the owners of a B&B in Naples to help us plan the next stage of our trip. They were flexible about last-minute changes in our reservation. Most impressive was our arrival at the hotel. Our older daughter was traveling to Venice separately, and by the time we reached the Locanda San Barnaba, the staff had already taken the initiative to contact KLM to check on our daughter's canceled flight. We would all stay there again in a heart beat.

Room Tip: We had rooms on both the 2nd and 3rd floors. We selected the rooms in email consultation with the s...

The hotel is near the vaporetto stop of Ca' Rezzonico. It is on a pretty little canal off the grand canal. It is away from the crowds of San Marco but a short walk or vaporetto ride to all the major sights. My room was large and breakfast was in a lovely courtyard garden. It was charming and I plan to stay again. The negatives are that there is no elevator and no WiFi. There is a Wi Fi cafe across the street and not having an elevator was not a problem for me but may be a problem for someone who has trouble walking.

I've stayed at the Locanda San Barnaba on two occasions, in late March 2006 and again in late March 2012 (a great time to visit Venice, by the way). Each stay at this small comfortable hotel was memorable and quite enjoyable. As mentioned in other reviews, the location is outstanding, roughly a hundred-meter walk from the Ca' Rezzonico vaporetto stop and a few steps away from Campo San Barnaba (where Katherine Hepburn fell in the canal in the film "Summertime"). The hotel is quiet, nicely furnished, with rooms on three floors. Breakfast is more than adequate. There are two outside sitting areas: one by the breakfast room and another just off the top floor. A large wonderfully decorated salon on the first floor is a place to relax, with books and board games available. I don't think there's a lift, but the very helpful staff will carry your luggage up and down for you. The staff are also happy to suggest walks around out-of-the-way places in Venice, and will provide you with handy pocket maps of the city. The Locanda is away from the hustle-bustle of San Marco, but all the attractions are within easy walking distance, and a large choice of restaurants is in the immediate neighborhood. Art lovers will appreciate that the Accademia and the Guggenheim are just a few minutes away. In all, an outstanding place to stay in Venice.

Located in an authentic Venetian palazzo, the San Barnaba is a lovely hotel located minutes from the Accademia and situated in a vibrant Venetian neighborhood. Excellent restaurants are nearby and the local stop for the "vaporetto," or public water bus service, is a 3 minutes walk from the Hotel's front door, making it very easy to access the entire city. The hotel staff are extremely helpful and friendly.
As other reviewers have noted, the breakfast terrace is beautiful, opening onto one of the city's smaller canals and providing a marvelous spot to begin your daily tours. This was our second stay at the San Barnaba. we stayed multiple nights and will certainly do so again.

Room Tip: The hotel does not have an elevator; persons with mobility issues should ask for one of the ground f...

Experience a warm welcome in a 16th century Palace, where the enchantment and magic of Venice are complemented by the modern conveniences required by even the most exacting clientele. An architecturally sensitive restoration has brought back to life serene splendor of the era of which this building is an admirable example. Each of the fourteen rooms has a story to tell: the lover's nest, the philosopher's refuge, the artist' s studio, the playwright' s chamber, where echoes of his muse still linger. The "Locanda San Barnaba" is located in the center of the city, between Accademia Gallery, Piazza San Marco and Rialto Bridge, easy to reach from Piazzale Roma or "Santa Lucia" Railway Station by Vaporetto n° 1 (Ca' Rezzonico Stop). ... more   less
