“Best value for venice”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 14, 2013

The ideal option for someone who want not to spent a fortune for a venice's stay. A very cozy small hotel into the center of Venice ,just 3 steps of the St.Marko's square. The venetian style with the best staff, makes this hotel one of the best choice for smart people. Without means disadvantadged from the surrounding 4 and 5 star hotels, with 2 and 3 times more price. The only thing that needs little upgrade is the breakfast.

Don't know where to begin on this one, it was cozy. San Gallo Hotel is a little unique place, as soon as you walk in the wooden details, classic chairs and even the small size of the lobby makes you feel warm, and after being greeted by far the best front desk receptionist we found in Italy we just felt like we had arrived home. We had planned to stay only for one day but after in love with this place and Venice itself we just couldn't help it and decided to stay for two more days. The rooms are beautiful and the beds were really comfortable. Breakfast was good, and the lady in charge of the service makes the best hot chocolates. Overall we had an awesome time in this hotel, definitely recommended. We look forward to returning one day.

We were genuinely quite content with this small, quaint hotel. The position is just perfect for seeing Venice at its best. A 2 minute walk to St Marks. Yes, many of the previous comments are true, there are approximately 20 stairs before reaching reception, then further stairs to the rooms, but it's an original Venetian property, there is a shop and a theatre below the majority of the rooms so how could a lift be installed, unless one was devised to go around corners!
Room 22 was compact but perfectly adequate for a couple, who wants to spend hours in the room with so much to see in Venice? The bathroom was small but again, if one person uses it at a time ( which in my book is normal ) then there is no problem. The terrace and the breakfast are both fine, it's outdoors so pigeons will be around scavenging, there are thousands in the square just around the corner, get over it! The food is covered where possible. I think it's a lesson in life, you get what you pay for, the position of the San Gallo means that it can command a higher tariff than hotels and hostels further afield. However, if you want luxury and opulence, you need to pay more, that way you won't be disappointed. Would I recommend? Yes, will I go again, yes , I hope so!

Room Tip: Room 22 was next door to the terrace, the smell of croissants at 7:00 was lovely to wake to! There w...

Handy place to stay location wise. Rooms very small for family of 4 but we made do. Nice outdoor breakfast area but there seemed to be a wait and a scramble to get a warm croissant each morning. Decor very ornate Venetian style which was lovely. Staff very helpful especially with luggage as no lifts just stairs to reception. Had a problem with electricity when we arrived and had the problem attended to straight away. Everything was clean and comfy.

I was apprehensive about our trip to venice, we got the train from Peschiera Del Garda, 41 euro for 2 adults 2 kids. But my fears were unfounded lol, the Italian trains may have a strict seat carriage regime but we sat were we liked and nobody seemed to care. We got water taxi to St. Marks/ The hotel was easily found and amazing, An real Italian family run hotel in Venice with pride in the way the city is talked about. This is a fantastic hotel, mini bar 3 euro a beer. This hotel is 50 meters from St Marks square. Vito and Thomas are amassadors for venice. There is no better hotel in Venice, i will ne back!!!

Room Tip: Talk to the lads, they will keep ya right

I think people could react to this hotel in either way depending on expectations. Our family of 4 stayed in probably their largest room with a double bed and two singles in it.

The room and bed was quite pleasant. The bathroom is small also similar to the complaints made by others about other rooms.

The stairs are a challenge with heavy bags. On arrival we had a good help from Vito who carried our two big bags in one trip up the staircase. On departure, we did not get the same service but at least it was down the stairs.

Breakfast is very basic as other has described, but I enjoyed the cakes and croissants which were freshly baked that morning. I had one of the most delicious chocolate croissants fresh out of the oven! Juice was fresh, coffee was good.

We wanted ice and the night attendant gladly helped us with with ice from their kitchen.

I can see that some rooms may be teeny and feel stuffy. This is a very small hotel in a very old building without any updated or luxury renovations in its interior. A 2 or 3 star rated type accommodations at best. Hence the many complaints about that.

But our room was clean, did not feel cluster phobic and at a very good price compared to other hotels we could find in the area we wanted (near San Marco) that could fit 4 people in a single room.

With all the qualifications, with a proper expectation for just basic accommodations, we enjoyed our one-day stay at this hotel before boarding our cruise ship the next day. If we wanted a more significant breakfast, the savings was enough to buy a nice breakfast with change to spare.

Room Tip: The room we have that can fit four people seems to escape the majority of the complaints other have...

The hotel is small, old, dark and somewhat smelly. And the stairs are for real, even once you get inside the property. I booked it because of the location, but it really wasn't worth it. The roof top deck for breakfast is pleasant. There are many more options available on both sides of the Grand Canal that provide convenience and value.
