We didn't stay in the hotel but in the apartment. The staff at the hotel was very friendly and helpful. They even walked us to the apartment which was very helpful because I'm sure we would have gotten lost! The apartment is in a good location near St. Maria Formosa so we were always able to get back to it with little trouble (once we knew where it was!). The air conditioner either wasn't working or we didn't know how to use it because it never got cool in the room. We wanted to leave the window open for a breeze but the noise from the restaurant in the alley below us was extremely loud...even though it was around midnight. Once we closed the shutters and the windows we had complete silence in the room..it was just very warm. The bathrooms were a good size. The room at the top of the stairs to the left is the bigger room with the bigger bathroom and on the quieter side. The other room, behind the kitchen is smaller and the bathroom is actually in the hallway but that didn't bother us. The kitchen is equipped with dishes, pots, pans, sink, stove, oven(?), and a small refrigerator. Be sure to pick something up for breakfast if you can find a small grocery. We happened to have some tea bags and coffee bags with us. My only complaint was that we couldn't get the air conditioner to cool the rooms. However we didn't call the staff and ask about it, they could have helped but it wasn't that big a deal. This would be a great place for a family to stay!

We truly enjoyed staying at the Locanda al Leon. The location of the hotel is excellent. The staff was very friendly, helpful and very pleasent. The room was very clean and spcious. The breakfast was very good. We got a 5-star hotel for the price of 3-star one.

We absolutely loved staying at the Locanda al Leon. It was a stone's throw from St. Mark's Square and the directions given by the hotel on their website were fab. The owners are wonderful and discussed all sorts with us including Italian grammar! The (very nicely air conditioned) room was spacious and so nicely decorated with wooden beams and lovely bathroom. The soundproofing was also amazing. Despite being in the middle of Venice you didn't hear a thing, not even from the other rooms in the hotel. The breakfast was great - cereal, croissants, bread rolls, yogurt, biscuits, juice and tea or coffee. You could also have breakfast delivered to your room for free to save them space in the small breakfast room, bot that it was ever too full when we were there. We rang and the breakfast lady appeared within 2 minutes! Perfect. And they left us a packet of biscuits on our pillow for our departure. What more could you ask for?! There was always someone on the front desk, so you can come and go as you please. Would definitely recommend this place to anyone visiting Venice.
We paid €90 for our room in July.

We have stayed twice (summers of 2010 and 2011) at the Locanda Al Leon and we can’t say enough good things about this hotel as being the place to stay in Venice. Absolutely everything about it makes it a wonderful place to stay whether for just one or two nights or for a week to ten days (we have done both). Giuliano, Marcella and the entire staff are very courteous, friendly and helpful. “Locanda” refers to it being family owned and operated and they do a wonderful job making you comfortable and feeling as if you are the most important guest they have.

The room prices are more than just fair, they are a real bargain for what you get in terms of room (including a typical Italian Continental breakfast), service and especially location.
The facilities are charming, beginning with a 500 year old staircase leading to updated, comfortable, clean and well appointed rooms.

The location really has to be the best in all of Venice….just out of the way of the throngs of tourist, yet so ideally close…really close….to all that is needed. The front door is less than 200 yards from St. Mark’s Square, less than 300 yards from the San Marco Vaporetto and Alilaguna stops, and only about 100 yards from the Zacharia Vaporetto stop and the famous (and outrageously expensive) Hotel Daneli. Just a few feet from the front door is a wonderful little square with several shops, pharmacy and three restaurants (all good)….also just off the square is a coffee/bistro and a friendly bar….wander a few feet more up some of the walkways and there are several other shops, restaurants, and a coin operated laundry, etc….

Venice is a city that needs to be explored on foot and this hotel is located so that foot exploration to the Rialto Bridge and the Academia Bridge, and all that is in between, is so easily doable…..should you want to explore further by Vaporetto (we bought a week’s pass which is good for all the routes including Lido, Murano, Burano and all of the other islands) the Zacharia stop is ideal as you can board there and have a better chance for a front seat than you would if you boarded at San Marco (far more crowded at that stop)….and a front seat on a Vaporetto is an absolutely wonderful way to explore the Grand Canal.

We are looking forward to our next opportunity to return to Venice….and when we do we will most definitely be staying at the Locanda Al Leon.

The owners were very friendly, welcoming and helpful. They gave us several codes for the free wi-fi as we kept using them up - no problem at all. Very close to San Marco Square and the water-front outdoor shopping area. Comfortable room, large bathroom. Decor included Murano glass lighting, nice local touch. The breakfast and tables are kept up nicely with a very authentically dressed Italian maid. Good selection for continental style breakfast, nice choice of coffee and teas and relaxing. Room was quiet in evening, great for sleeping. The owner helped to carry our luggage up the stairs, as there is not an elevator.

Everyone was very friendly, and very helpful. My friend and I were travelling with her 17 month old, and not all places in Venice are very patient with children. The hotel staff let us keep the pram downstairs, so we didn't have to carry it, or clutter up the room. There was a good size fridge, so we were able to buy groceries to keep the price of meals down. It's very close to one of the main vaporetto stops (San Zaccaria), where you can catch any of the vaporetto lines. It's also very close to the main tourist attractions, without the high price that you would expect. Clean and quiet, breakfast was good, and big by Italian standards.
