Excellent location. In a small square a short distance from St. Mark's square. Excellent customer service and very friendly staff. we stayed 3 nights. Was very close to catch San Zaccharia waterbus stop. nice small bar area, breakfast buffet included.

A week-long stay in Venice was made all the better by the Hotel Fontana.

The hotel itself was very easy to find if getting off at the San Zaccharia waterbus stop, and can be reached in a couple of minutes. It was also about 7 minutes from St Mark's Square.

On arrival, we were greeted enthusiastically and provided with useful information on how to get around. Since it was also recently my birthday I was given a lovely photograph of Venice from the air, taken by a member of the Stainer family, who run the hotel.

The room was exactly what we needed, clean and airy with excellent air conditioning which was definitely needed at this time of year. The room faced out onto a busy thoroughfare but this didn't bother us at all since we were so tired at night to be concerned with any noise, and with the windows also having shutters it would have been possible to lessen noise from the street.

Housekeeping were fantastic, changing the bed often and making the room feel fresh again.

The breakfast that was provided was a lovely continental breakfast, and left us feeling satisfied every morning.

Another bonus was the great bar next door to the hotel, Bacaro Risorto, which had a great atmosphere and great lively young staff.

The staff were fantastic overall, and keen to help with any request. For any future trips to Venice we would definitely be staying at the Hotel Fontana, it was perfect.

In July (2012), in the heat and mass of tourists the Hotel Fontana was the most welcoming oasis. The hotel was small but perfect everything outside at ones fingertips. The most benefit for us as a couple staying there was the extent to which they made our stay so enjoyable no limits to where this was or that was - how long to get here and then get there - visit this Restaurant and then another one would also be recommended and everything totally honestly with our well being the central focus of the professional family's efforts from morning til night.

Room Tip: All rooms have airconditioning and, at the rear, are quiet even at the height of the season

I wasn't sure about this one, the website doesn't give alot away and the reviews were mixed, but I needn't have worried. A clean and tidy hotel, in a fabulous location, it's within three minutes of the vaporetto stop from the airport (and no bridges if you have luggage). The hotel is in a small 'square' (actually more of a triangle) with three decent restaurants and a quaint bar within five metres of its front door, and plenty more in the surrounding streets. Despite this, its actually quite quiet and not as crowded with tourists as other streets. I had a courtyard room, though, which might have helped. Room was a decent size for Venice: included a double and single bed which would have been great if I'd been with the family. TV was only Sky pay-per-view and looked to be mostly in Italian, but you don't go to Venice to watch TV. The bathroom was very small - stand up shower only and little space. Breakfasts were a bit synthetic but plenty of it - rolls, cheese and ham, eggs, sliced fruit (tinned), yoghurt, croissants, cereals, etc. Machine coffee and juice: nothing was hand-cooked. Staff were friendly and helpful; young chap on the desk spoke good English, a towel rail that fell down was fixed swiftly without fuss and without me even reporting it. There's a lift!
I have stayed in a few better hotels in Venice but the Fontana is really good value and has a good feel to it.

Dear Sir,
I'm very happy to read about your pleasant stay at Hotel Fontana. I just want to clarify something for the readers: Sky TV is not only pay-per-view, we offer full Sky tv programs for free, including News, Cinema channels (italian and original language) and international main broadcasters.

We loved this hotel - spent four nights here before going on cruise from Venice. The staff were welcoming, friendly and gave us really good information, particularly about local restaurants all within 10 minutes walk. The location was excellent, about 5 minutes walk from St Marks and 2 minutes from one of the main water bus stops in square with lots of shops, cafes, and great bar next door. The room and bathroom were clean and well equipped - at night it was bit noisy because it fronted on to the square but with the shutters closed it was fine. Breakfast was simple but there was quite a good choice. Would certainly go back there in the future.

Room Tip: Could be quieter at the back of the hotel.

We booked the hotel Fontana based on tripadvisor reviews and we were not disappointed. This charming Venetian style hotel is well situated within 5 minute walk of St Marks Square and 2-3. Minutes from water bus stop San Zaccaria. The staff are very friendly and helpful. Our room was simply furnished, clean and functional with a small bathroom. The shower was good and hot water plentiful. There was a flat screen TV with Sky. The only thing that was lacking was tea/coffee facilities. Self service Breakfast buffet was adequate, comprising of cold meats and cheese, cereals, bread rolls and pastries, boiled eggs.

There is a small bar selling reasonably priced drinks if desired. Free WiFi available only in the bar area.

There are numerous restaurants in the immediate vicinity of the hotel. We tried Roberto's Pizzeria across from the hotel but wouldn't rave about it. Food was mediocre and the service was lacking. They are more interested in rapid turnover than getting repeat business.
We liked the bar next to the hotel. Drinks were reasonably priced and they were a friendly bunch.

The beauty of this hotel is that it is conveniently situated for all major attractions. We got a 36 hour pass for the water bus which gives unlimited travel for this period. Great value if you are going to do more than 2 journeys. Recommend getting water bus number 1 which travels up the Grand Canal so you can get on and off as you please. We also took a trip to the island of Burano which was a really nice half day out.

TIP: If you are travelling to hotel from Marco Polo airport by public water bus, pre-book the tickets online and print off voucher which you need to exchange for actual tickets at the ticket booth just before you get on the boat. You will save time and money this way and also possibly avoid long queues at the ticket office located in the arrivals hall.
The journey to Venice is about 1 hour and 15 minutes which is quite scenic if the weather is good. You can book a shared transfer which is quicker but about 15 Euros each more for a return ticket. Take the blue line and get off at San Zaccaria. Hotel is 3 minutes walk from there.

SUMMARY: if you want a good value well located comfortable no frills hotel then Hotel Fontana certainly fits the bill.

This was a great hotel - right in the middle of Venice. Easy to get to (5 mins walk from the San Zaccaria vaporetto stop) and only a short walk to St Mark's Square. The hotel owners were extremely friendly and easy going, very chatty and welcoming. Breakfast was simple but exactly what was needed to kick start each day (continental buffet). We stayed in room #14 and had some of the best sleep we've ever had - a really comfortable bed, and the room was remarkably sound-proof, except for the occasional ringing of church bells from the lovely church nearby (which was very soothing!). We had a nice veranda too with windows we could leave open whilst having an afternoon nap.
It felt a little pricey, but that's Venice - I don't think we would have got a better deal anywhere else, especially for such a superb location!

Room Tip: Room 14 was on the top level, and quiet, and super dooper comfortable!
