Friendliest Hotel we have stayed in. Only minutes from the ferries and St Marks square. Good selection of restaurants and bars right on the doorstep. We had a lovely big room and cannot find anything we did not like.

The hotel is in a great location and we stayed in a nice clean room with a very comfortable bed.

The bathtub/shower took a little getting used to. It was essentially a bathtub with a shower attachment that made for a pretty wet and messy shower if you weren't careful. But, in the end, we were able to shower every day, so all's well that ends well.

Breakfast was OK, but I have to agree with another reviewer that the coffee out of the push button machine was a bit of a disappointment.

We also found that the front desk was not manned 24/7. Everyone seemed to disappear at around 10pm and, although a television and lights were on all around, no one could be found. During the day, however, the front desk was manned and the hosts were very, very helpful.

All in all we had a very pleasant stay and I would recommend the hotel.

I have stayed at the Hotel Fontana several times and did so again in mid-October 2012. The hotel is location is excellent, with direct (no bridges) access to the San Zaccaria varporetto and Alilaguna (airport route) docks, and an easy walk to the San Marco plaza tourist area. Several good restaurants and small bars are located close by. The hotel itself is of the older style, with traditional decor and small, but modern, private bathrooms. No room safe is provided. Air conditioning is provided but window screens are not, so opening the windows or using the balcony (which some rooms have) can result in a nighttime mosquito surprise. The lovely breakfast buffet is generous and tasty, and free WiFi is provided in the lobby lounge only, with direct connection to the hotel's WiFi access point (rather than through a spam-producing 3rd party web site). The hotel has a small but modern elevator. Perhaps the hotel's best feature is the proprietors: Diego and his wife, his brother Gabriele, their mother, and other family members staff the hotel and are terrific. They're friendly, speak a variety of languages well, and could not be more welcoming, They're a great source of information, from the cost of various attractions to the boat schedules, which they can recite from memory. Hotel Fontana provides a very good value for the money and I heartily recommend it.

If you are traveling to Venice, this is THE place to book! From the vaperretto stop, you only have one bridge to traverse to get to the hotel...and the upon arrival, the hotel has one of the few elevators in Italy. It is super convenient to the water transportation and you are only a 5 minute walk to St. Mark's Square. It is very close to the more expensive hotels and gives you access to the restaurants. The staff was excellent! Very friendly and helpful. The breakfast they provide in the mornings has a really good selection depending on what you prefer...including warm croissants. Rooms are nicely done and serviced daily. If I get the opportunity to return, I will gladly stay here again and again.

Room Tip: My room was the small one in their annex (a double used for single travelers), which is an old palac...

Hotel Fontana is located near San Marco square and the San Zaccaria vaporette stops and therefore very easy to get to, even with some luggage. Nearby there are some restaurants, a music shop and a bar at the corner where the younger crowd hangs out for drinks and small bites to eat. The room was nicely appointed although a bit aged and towels and bath room amenities like soap and champoo could certainly receive some attention. The reception mostly manned by younger family members functions well and advice is freely offfered. There is someone at the desk 24/7. Breakfast is served on the ground floor in the back and is fairly nice except for the coffee which comes out of a button operated machine and is the worst I had in Venice and all over Italy. Juice is are more like colored water with a whif of taste.
From the hotel it is easy to get to Marco Polo airport on the Alilaguna (blue line) which leaves from the B platform at San Zaccaria ( not more then a 10 min walk). The Santa Lucia trains station can be reached with #1 vaporette (going through Grand Canal) or other lines which are more direct.
In summary this is where Hotel Fontana stands:
Location: 9
Staff ands service: 7
Rooms: 6
TV ease of use : 2
Bathroom amenities: 1
Breakfast : 5
Coffee: Minus 10
Venice is great though - explore and try walking off the beaten track.

Just stayed 3 nights at Hotel Fontana in Venice, which - for sure - can be recommended. - Hotel is VERY central located only 100 m from the boat coming from the airport. - 3 minutes to San Marco and in the heart of Venice.
Nice rooms and good breakfast at a good price.
Remimber to visit the Bar next to the Hotel.. :-)

Travelled by Jet 2 to Venice from Leeds Bradford Airport on Sept 30th returning October 4th. This was our first experience of a Budget Airline and we were pleasantly surprised. The Aeroplanes were clean relatively spacious with every indication of care by both the ground-staff and the flight attendants, Both flight were on time with factually the outbound leaving and arriving a little early.
We stayed at the Hotel Fontana just a few minutes walk from St Marks Square. Our shared water Taxi dropped us off and collected us just four minutes from the hotel with a completely even ‘no bridges’ walk to the accommodation. Our room ( 5 ) was spacious and spotlessly clean with a large shower WC and bidet.. The hotel is run and owned by the Stainer family who were most helpful informative and in the nicest possible way kind. The young Stainers have a good command of English and the older generation tolerated my poor Italian with good humour and many smiles.
Bar prices at the Fontana are better than the Venetian average and though the continental breakfast was somewhat limited for we strict vegetarians we had enough to start the day well.
The restaurants around the monument at the waterfront near the San Zaccaria water bus stop seemed the best value though those around the Fond dell Osmarin were comparable. Even in early October the streets and alleyways were crowded but not threatening and the square outside the hotel ‘Campo San Provolo had an active nightlife with street entertainers, music, and the constant hum of the populace enjoying life. Even though our room overlooked this square and was perched above the bar due to comfortable beds, adequate glazing and closable shutters we slept soundly.
Since being a young man I have loved Venice and though now much like the city I am decaying gently away I was still able to feel its magic. This I know will have been my last visit to Venice and I am glad to leave it as I found it, robust, romantic, and like the Doge Lorenzo magnificent
