Pensione La Calcina

Certificate of Excellence

We were pretty insistent on a corner room with the view of the Giudecca Canal. And boy, I'm glad I was because it was gorgeous. We had a nice terrace too. The room was small, but that's to be expected in Italy. The bathroom was clean and rather large by European standards. The staff wasn't super polite (a few were) but we really didn't have much interaction with them. Breakfast was excellent. I was so tired of croissants for breakfast in every hotel in Italy, that hard boiled eggs, meat and fruit were exciting. We had lunch on the water too and it was also very tasty. If you have the money, stay here. I splurged and had a great time. We also had some good drinks out front.

Room Tip: Corner room on upper floor, facing the canal!

We booked this hotel through Venere.com. Big mistake! Our double room was on the first floor. When we entered, we were greeted by intense cleaning detergent odors, intense garlic odor because we were directly above the kitchen, and intense cigarette smoke wafting in from the kitchen staff smoking outside! We then talked to the manager, Antonio, and he informed us that this is what you get when booking through venere or other online website. He moved us to an available apartment a block away with a view of a brick wall, We chose this hotel to have a scenic view of Venice. Very disappointed. Antonio was very pleasant, but one of the ladies at the front desk was annoyed whever we asked a question.

If you want to avoid glitzy hotels overrun by tourists, chose La Calcina. Located in a picturesque waterside neighborhood with numerous nearby restraurants and easily accessible to the main Venetian attractions, you will meet as fellow guests some of the most interesting and entertaining people from all over the world. This property has the attractions of a well managed B&B but the amenities of a small botique hotel. Best of all is the superb staff, knowledgeable and super helpful. La Calcina may not be for everyone. Many rooms are on the small side, and the multi-storied building lacks an elevator (but a willing staff transports luggage, and they go out of their way to help handicapped guests). For atmosphere, staff friendliness, service, and a small hotel ambiance, choose Pensione La Calcina!

Room Tip: If you are the least bit bothered by noise, chose a room on the backside, away from the adjacent can...

We have stayed at this Pensione many times and the standards remain the same ie excellant. we feel very much at home in La Calcina - the service and customer care is excellent and the situation is perfect. We tend to visit Venice in November and La Calcina is our favourite place to stay.

Room Tip: Rooms facing on to the Guidecca are noisier because of the traffic but very nice to wake up to

We stayed at this hotel the night before our cruise. Our room was small but very nice. We had a view of the canal outside our window even though we paid for a room without a view. The wifi worked great in the room or the lobby. I enjoyed sitting in the lobby, looking out the big window which overlooks the canal. We thought the location was great on Zattere near to the waterbus and convenient for the Accademia. It is a bit of a walk to St. Marks Square but very doable! We would highly recommend this hotel.

This is a very charming hotel, and I will definitely return to Pensione La Calcina. The breakfast is excellent (simple, but very good), but the lunch and dinner served in the restaurant was a bit disappointing this time.

La Calcina is a typical Venican Hotel, small, expensive and the service could improve.

The staff were efficient but not friendly, and they could benefit from some people skills.

The rooms are small but everything in Venice is tight, the bathroom was modern and clean. The wifi worked well.

They do breakfast which was served on the pontoon and it's location was a long walk from the Piazza San Marco and the main area of Venice.

Venice is on par with Paris when it come to places to stay, expensive, small, old and in demand. On that front La Calcina was definately in the same league as Paris, but it was comfortable and we did manage to see Venice albeit with tired legs!

Room Tip: It's very close to the Cruise ship dock, so if you are coming off a cruise it would be ideal.
