My first experience of Venice was a couple of years ago, and La Calcina was recommended to me by a literary friend because of the connection with John Ruskin. First, the location is brilliant: away from the madding crowd and yet perfectly located with easy access to the Zattere vaporetto stop and the Accademia. Second, the house itself is charming, with interesting rooms, either on the canal or not. The present owners, Debora and Alessandro Szemere, go to lengths to ensure a wonderful welcome, and all the staff are friendly, professional, charming and, often, at ease in several European languages concurrently! The food is excellent.
