Charming and incredibly beautiful location. After a month in Italy and 2 nights at another hotel in Dorsoduro, we repaired to La Calcina for R and R and little creative work for 3 days. The action out the windows and the ideal location with a very helpful staff made for a great sojourn. In any event it was fun to let one's mind go knowing that the breakfast would be served along the waters' edge and that the room would always be clean and cool after pounding the deep summer Venetian pavements. Sounds of water craft, church bells, views from the Altana (roof top terrace) makes it practically perfect. The lack of a lift makes it well nigh impossible for some but the lady who brings you coffee every morning is like a welcome auntie we all had once. I'm going back as soon as my pocket book permits.

Room Tip: Ask for canal front at a slightly higher rate.

The Eastern Dorsoduro is a lovely area of Venice to stay in summer- away from the busiest tourist crowds but close enough for easy access on foot or using the excellent Vaporetto (waterbus) service. La Calcina makes the most of this beautiful location by being on the waterfront of the Giudecca Canal. On the hottest days there is a delicious breeze off the water when you dine in the waterside restaurant. The staff of both hotel and restaurant are excellent - welcoming and accommodating. The decor of the hotel gives a strong sense of history, our bed was comfortable, the air conditioning efficient, the shower powerful. Much has been said elsewhere about requesting a room with a view of the canal. We decided against this as the tariff was much more reasonable for those without and we had no intention of spending much time in our hotel room with the whole of Venice to explore! In the event we had a room with a large balcony and a partial view of the canal anyway! Getting around - we would certainly recommend buying a VENICEcard for the number of days you are on holiday. This is like a season ticket for the Vaporetto so you can hop on and off them at will for your whole visit. The nearest Vaporetto stop to La Calcina is Zattere - literally a few yards away. Getting to the hotel from Marco Polo Airport - a much cheaper option than the water taxi mentioned in a previous review is catching an Alilaguna Blue Line boat (15 euros) which takes longer ( about an hour a a half) but takes you to Zattere with no need for any changes. As you can tell we would thoroughly recommend La Calcina as your base for exploring Venice.

This is a wonderful place to stay. We didn't ask for a room with a view but were surprised when we arrived (which we arrived early in the morning from the US and they were able to have us just wait 15 minutes in the lobby for our room to be ready) in our room to see that we did have a slight view of the canal anyway. Plus, our room had a huge outside deck with a table and chairs and a lounge chair as well. Eating breakfast each morning (great breakfast - caters to the American idea of breakfast with choice of scrambled egg or omelette) on the canal was absolutely super as well. We also had dinner in the restaurant at the hotel (we ate in the same place as where breakfast was served in the a.m.) If I ever go back to Venice I'd easily stay here and would recommend it to anyone.

This has it in spades, as well as almost everything else you could need.
We arrived in Venice late morning and did what everyone should do once if they can afford it (110 euros) which is to take a water taxi from the airport (buy ticket at the kiosk in arrivals, turn left out of the door and follow the canopy for 5 minutes to the taxi stand). Outstanding trip, views of the lagoon and the islands, and a short trip through some of the canals, depending on where you are staying. Thirty minutes door to door.
Even though we arrived before the official check in time, our room was ready. Bright, clean, well appointed, overlooking the Guideca canal (Room 34), it was perfect and we thoroughly enjoyed our three nights there.
The staff were terrific, helping with reservations an recommendations. Their English made up for my lack of Italian.
The restaurant was excellent, on the terrace on the canal, great food, desserts to die for, comprehensive wine list. Breakfast is buffet style inside and out, but you can order omelettes from the wait staff. And wait staff it certainly seemed to be; my only niggle with this otherwise excellent hotel is that breakfast service was glacially slow!
Location: right next to the Vaporetto stop and a waterbus stop. These really are the best way to get around and very cheap if you get one of the passes available in advance or from the ticket offices. The route maps are easy to read and you can island hop easily. La Calcina itself is close to many of the main attractions, within easy walking distance of St Marks Square, etc.
All in all a great little hotel, great staff and service and good value. Would definitely stay there again, which is about as good a recommendation as you can get.
