On our recent trip to Venice, we stayed at the Hilton Molino Stuckey on the Giudecca island. They provide a free shuttle service that stops at Zattere and San Marcos. Just to the right of the Zattere stop is Pensione Calcina. We joined another couple we had met on the trip for an evening out and liked the look of the waterfront restaurant and decided to eat there. While fairly pricey, my wife and I paid 60 euros for our supper, it was a very nice meal. We began our meal with a delious tomato florentine soup with garlic croutons. We then enjoyed a delicious vegetable and seafood risotto. After the meal, we strolled along the promade a bit and then stopped at Nico's for gelato. It was a beautiful evening and a very nice meal. The staff was not overly friendly, but competent. Overall, it was a nice meal.

We normally rent an apartment own by this lovely hotel when in Venice. The apartments are near to the hotel and you get all of the hotel amenities with your reservation, i.e. breakfast on the canal, internet, etc. The apartments are varied in size and layout and are visible online at warmhospitality.com. They have full kitchens and large rooms with white marble floors throughout. The air conditioning is Mitsubishi units that keep the whole apartment as cold as you want it. The marble floors are a major plus in winter in helping to keep the apartment cool. The maid service is impeccable! The service at the hotel is outstanding as is the breakfast. Starting your day with breakfast on a covered barge overlooking the canal is marvelous. We also end our stay in Venice each time with a sumptuous dinner on the canal. The food at the hotel is terrific!

What a wonder to have a full apartment for the approximate price of a large room in Venice! This place is the total package. You won't go wrong here. After our last trip where we had to stay at the Locanda Ca Zose (please read my review on that hotel), we will always be sure to book our apartment months in advance to assure a beautiful experience in the magical city of Venice. Pensione La Calcina is a huge part of why we love Venice so very much! Thanks to everyone at the hotel for their hospitality and kindness. You simply have to stay here when in Venice!

Room Tip: try the apartments, but book far, far in advance.

I stayed here while taking a few days to do some reading and thinking (well, I am an academic!). It is a small, pleasant hotel located right on the lagoon. It is just a few minutes walk to the main locations in central Venice but far enough out to be away from the hordes. My room was quite basic but very good value through a booking engine. That was in the winter so summer prices would be quite a bit higher. Overall very positive.

I stayed here in 2010 and absolutely loved it. My sister had recommended it to me as her and her husband stayed here on their honeymoon. Our room was small but very clean and had fresh lavender in it that made the whole place smell amazing. We were on a budget so asked for a budget room and as a result got a small room with out a view. However, we saw some of the other rooms and they were gorgeous. However, even our small room had charm. We arrived at night and were so incredibly and pleasantly surprised to come down to breakfast to see the beautiful view. The breakfast was absolutely delicious and the view was to die for. The service was incredibly friendly and helpful for all our needs. i would definitely recommend this Pensione to others looking for a slightly more budget option in Venice.

We stayed at the La Calcina for 2 days after a cruise and were delighted with our choice. I'd done my homework (and with many thanks for other TA travellers who recommended the La Calcina - the advice was spot on) and we also had the added bonus of being able to have a birds-eye view of Venice while departing and arriving from the cruise ship deck, so we knew exactly where the hotel was in relation to everywhere else. We wanted someplace central, yet not right in the middle of the crowds. La Calcina fits the bill perfectly.

Arriving early after debarkation, we were quite prepared to have to store our luggage until the room was ready, and gladly went off in search of coffee and to explore. Our first stop was to get passes for the vaporetto at the Zaterre stop, which was a minute's walk from the hotel. Then we found our way to Nico's for an amazing gelatto (the first of many during our stay, as there are so many flavours to choose from). When we got back to the hotel, our luggage was already in our room.

And what a lovely room it was! It goes without saying that rooms in Europe tend to run on the smaller side, and this was no different, but the view out of both windows over the canal made for some great canal watching and fresh breeze. Some have noted that it can be noisy, and this is the case, as the Guidecca canal is very busy. However, with the windows shut (the aircondioner works beautifully) the noise is minimal, and most of the boats cease after around 10pm, so through the night it is very quiet.

Our room was on the second floor (3rd floor American) and facing the canal. There is no elevator in the building. With two twin beds and a few oddly arranged desks/chairs it did not allow for any place to spread out or relax (they were not that sort of chairs), but the stocked fridge and hotel information folder were useful. The bathroom was quite large and offered the usual sink, toilet, stand-up shower and bidet. While the water pressure was great, the grabby shower curtain in the small shower was a bit off-putting. And bring your own toiletries if this is important to you as the ones offered were very basic and small. The internet was a problem for most of our stay, and perhaps because it was a weekend with no one to tech support, it never really worked properly. But it is complimentary, so not much to complain about.

While here, we learned the hotel also has self-catering apartments nearby. The rates seem very reasonable and would make sense for longer stays or families with small children. We will look into these for our next visit for certain.

The staff were wonderful and offered suggestions for places to eat, visit and see. The included breakfast was served either inside or outside on the deck and had a great selection of cold cuts, pastries, youghurt and fruits to choose from, as well as many teas, coffees, juice and capuccinos/cafe latte. We also took dinner at the hotel restaurant one evening and ate outside with a great view of the canal. The hotel offers a special meal rate for hotel guests, so be sure to tell the staff when you arrive. Though the service was a bit slower than we would have liked (this is a common thing in Italy we found, as the waiters do not want to seem as if rushing you through your meal) the food was well-prepared and of good quality.

The location of the hotel could not be better. With the vaporetto and alilaguna stops within a minute or less walk, there are also many shops and restaurants all along the esplanade (including a cash point/ABM and post office). The Academia and Guggenheim galleries are within 5 minutes walk and the bridge over to "downtown" is also there. Though we used our vaporetto passes, we did a fair amount of walking, as Venice is compact and easily walked (though there are lots of bridges and steps for those with mobility issues) The vaporetto got you to St. Mark's Square in 15 minutes (other stops too), but it can be just as easily walked in about 20 minutes. We loved Venice and can't wait to return!

I stayed in a single room in the hotel's main building and was a little disappointed. But not devastated. I found the staff friendly and helpful. The location is wonderful looking onto the Giudecca. The hotel itself is simple but quite charmingly unpretentious and authentic. The negatives were that my room was too basic, with a very uncomfortable bed and pillows, and most importantly, very poorly soundproofed. All the hotel's doors close with a very loud, very audible mechanism that woke me up during the night. I could also easily here other people's televisions. Windows could have used mosquito netting so you could keep them open at night.

Breakfast wasn't good, and slow, but the waiters were cheery and the view from the pontoon they serve it on in fine weather makes you happy. Due to the noise, I'm not sure I would instantly stay here again but might still consider it if I couldn't find anything I liked better, especially if a room with a view was available.

We had stayed at this Pensione ten years ago and were looking forward to returning. A communication problem caused transport problems and we were not at all impressed by the rudeness of the receptionist. The polite manager tried to solve the conflict and we had a look at the room offered (which was completely charmless). But it was the fact that the receptionist continued to spew foul abuse about us in Italian to her colleague, thinking we wouldn't understand her, that finally decided us that we could not feel comfortable staying here, and so forfeited our deposit and found friendly and cheaper accommodation nearby. This place has mostly good reviews, and we would have given one after our last stay. But they have at least one staff member who should not be in the hospitality industry.
