Hotel Pausania
Ranked #174 of 385 Hotels in Venice
Reviewed April 28, 2013

After looking around a number of Venetian hotels on the internet, we thought the Pausania had an excellent style and a good location, and so we booked two rooms , one for ourselves and one for two friends. The hotel certainly lived up to our expectation. It is an easy walk from the Piazzale Roma and away from the tourist rip-off areas around St Marco and Rialto. The hotel overlooks a quiet canal which joins the Grand Canal next to the Ca' Rezzonico (this is worth a visit and has some very interesting paintings and a reconstructed 18thC pharmacy on its top floor). The hotel staff were all very helpful and friendly and we were able to upgrade one of our rooms because of a problem with the air-conditioning unit. The rooms at the front of the hotel are accessible by an ancient stone staircase which winds around an open courtyard. This might prove challenging for anyone with a minor walking disability but it certainly gives this hotel an added charm. If you like like sleeping with open windows, be prepared for an early morning awakening due to the proximity of church bells - but that applies to most of Venice. Breakfast is served in a room next to the garden. There is a variety of food available including excellent muesli, fresh fruit and coffee. The croissants are sweet and some are filled with jam, but this is the way Italians like them. The garden is not one of the hotel's most attractive features, but the unseasonal Spring weather was too cold to entertain the idea of breakfast al fresco. The rest of the hotel is wonderful and both our rooms had good bathrooms and comfortable beds. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here.

We booked a superior double room which was very tastefully decorated with an interesting outlook over rooftops and the garden. Garden is probably not the right word: it is just long grass and some straggly bushes. Breakfast was ok. Too many sweet things for my taste but the coffee was good. All staff are very friendly and the hotel is well located. Just a short walk away were two Campos and a number if good bars and restaurants. Staying in Dorsodura is definitely better than in the very touristy sections of Venice. The bed was good but pillows too hard. Bathroom was probably what you would expect in Venice; tiny! My husband's head hit the roof in the shower

This was our second visit to Hotel Pausania, the first time being 2001.This time we returned with children and we would definitely stay here again if we ever come back to Venice. The hotel itself is a nutshell of Venetian history as clearly shown in the photos. We marvelled at the frescos on the bedroom ceiling and enormous chandelier. The staff could not have been more welcoming and were most helpful with restaurant recommendations as well as our general queries.
This is a perfect location off the beaten track though access to all areas is very easy on foot or via Ca Rezonnico waterbus stop.
The canal is quiet but just a hundred metres away is the studenty Campo Santa Margheurita with everything from mini-supermarket, sandwich bars and restaurants as well as what we decided was the best ice cream shop in Venice Il Doge. We ate well at a little Italian restaurant in the street behind the hotel which the hotel recommended (sorry can't remember name) and also a more expensive meal at Antica Locanda Montin which is hard to locate as across the canal from where you'd think it would be (but had a good review in The Guardian).
There is a jazz bar across the canal which looked exciting but unfortunately coudn't visit as we had children with us.
The only thing I'd recommend to improve this hotel is to tidy up the garden which the breakfast room and our bedroom overlooked.
We hope we are able to visit again.

We booked this hotel as it was just outside the main tourist areas, at a good price for a standard room especially if paying the non-refundable rate in advance. Staff arranged for a taxi to pick us up from the airport which was quite expensive (75 euros) but a nice start to the holiday, a quick drive in a very smart car. Of course you can't get right up to the hotel (there being no roads) so we did still have to trundle the cases some distance, made worse because we got lost. We checked in and the room was just right: stylish and clean, with a good bathroom. Having made the trip in March we were pleased to find the hotel was always toastie warm. There's a very nice sitting area upstairs with a balcony overlooking the small canal, which guests are free to use, also a TV area downstairs, a nice dining room - on the brochure it looks like that all opens up in warm weather but there were some building works going on and quite a bit of rubble in the garden so just as well it wasn't warm enough to open up the glass doors.
The staff were all very helpful and multi-lingual, the room was always cleaned and the bed made each day but it wasn't overdone - sometimes cleaners tidy up just a tad too much, but not here. The breakfasts were fairly standard continental style - mainly juice, cereal, rolls, cheese, meats, croissants, jam and yoghurts plus tea or coffee. We did wish for a bit of variety after a few days - maybe some fruit, even tinned grapefruit or prunes to help the digestion. Overall though a very pleasant place, super quiet at night so we had excellent sleeps. And having said it was outside the tourist areas, it's close enough for an easy walk to see all you want (the map we were given wasn't always 100% accurate so beware). Going back to the airport we found it best to walk to the bus station - about 20 minutes - and then paid 40 euros flat rate for a taxi from there, although a bus would have been cheaper still. I'd recommend the Pausania and would certainly go back there.

Room Tip: Our standard room didn't have much of a view but was good value - superior or canal side rooms c...

We had a moist enjoyable stay at the Pausania. The Breakfasts are good with plenty to each but hot chocolate was not hot so had coffee the next time. We were given quite a small room with roof window and being wet could not have this open. They were full the first night but we were able to move to another much bigger rooim (although not so beautifully decorated) with window which we could open the next day. No trouble and staff were very helpful. Enjoyed our free drink with Mauro on first night who was helpful in telling us about resturants etc.. Cleaning staff very helpful and friendly. Also so easy to find from water bus only 5 minutes walk and easy to get to all the sights of Venice. It is also quiet part of the town which is nice as no noise at night. All in all a very good stay. Room Tip: Had 301 first, only sky light window, but beautiful room with great bed. Moved to 204 bigger room wit...

On business trips, I appreciate this palazzo-hotel for its location, and for the family feel of the Reception team (sorry to forget one name!). Everything is beautiful, secure, cosy, also spacious and grand. The heating/cooling systems are excellent; bathrooms new and clean; the cleaning staff very obliging and helpful; beds very comfortable; the major sounds are the nearby Santa Maria dei Carmini church bell and the lapping of the canal of San Barnaba just outside the main entrance and stunning cortile. There are nearby vaporetto stops for two main lines, and it is a 15-minute walk to the Piazzale Roma, and about the same to the Rialto markets. The local caffès and restaurants and boat-vegetable-markets are frequented by many Venetians, so despite the presence of tourists, this locale will give you a chance to sample the real life whilst having a home sweet home to return to...for work, WIFI, siestes, end of day crash, or a lovely sit and stare in the characteristic 14-c piano nobile...
