“Excellent location but could use some sprucing up”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 20, 2013

This simple place has a superb location very close to one of the main vaporetto (water bus) docks on the Grand Canal, which is important since that is the only way to reach any place in Venice. It is also on a small side canal, complete with gondoliers serenading their passengers.

For the location the price is excellent, which in pricy Venice is no small achievement. As others have noted though you do have to deal with no elevator, no a/c, a very basic breakfast, and many of the rooms have no shower or toilet (although they do have a sink and bidet). The place really hits the 'faded elegance' vibe that is very much part of Venice; like much of the city it looks like the owners have deferred maintenance for a bit too long.

The staff is very engaging and helpful, and they've been there a long time -- they have a series of fascinating newspaper articles posted in the breakfast room documenting the Flood of 1966, for example.

If you can handle this simple pensione's shortcomings, it is a wonderful place to stay.

Room Tip: A couple of rooms open onto the canal, for a quintessential Venice experience

The location is great here, and the price. That's why my wife and I choice it. Also Rick Steve's talks about it in his book. The room wasn't horrible but it wasn't at all quaint. W only
Stayed for 2 nights and that was plenty. Bathroom was down the stairs. There's only 1 toilet for probably 8+ rooms and 1 shower. Breakfast is very poor with grouse rolls, the worst coffee I've ever had, and something like cornflakes. Also, i asked one of the workers of a place he goes and eats and he recommended a place that was a complete tourist trap with some of the most expensive food on the island. i usually trust the locals, but not here. Good location, good price, not nice rooms, service, and breakfast.

At this place you are definitely paying for convenience rather than facilities.Yes breakfast is included but its nothing to get excited about-two types of cereal and funny tasting bread rolls, tea and coffee and no cool drinks.Yes staff were friendly and helpful which definitely made the stay.Same as what others have said..this place is VERY old and definitely shows it,creaky wooden floors and doors, no elevator and dated decor. The no aircon was a major annoyance especially in the peak of summer. We thought we would be ok,but having a room on the third floor of course heat rises..it was almost unbearable.Fan did not have speed setting and only went on about .5 speed..barely enough to get the air moving. We had to have the windows open as a result and then we got the smell from the canal and the extremely loud rubbish boat emptying the local restaurant bottles at 7am each morning, followed by loud yelling by boat drivers..I was ready to crack it!!Guess it was ok to be up that early as we were almost melting in our room anyway.
For the short notice and location this place was adequate and we were lucky to get something realitively cheap in peak season, however if you like your creature comforts (and aircon!) this place isn't for you.

This is a nice, very old hostel right on a canal, less than a few minutes walk from Piazza San Marco. Very clean rooms and bathroom, simple breakfast. Mr. Bebo is the helpful night porter and Tessa and Nikos (the Italian Stallion in the words of Rick Steves) run the 'all-business' desk during the day. Request a room with a view of the canal for great gondola watching (though you will get plenty of people taking your picture if you sit in the window). Wifi is available in common areas but is best downstairs in the breakfast room, and spotty as you go farther up. The only reason I didn't give this hostel 5 stars was because I felt like I was going to break everything I touched (the doors, steps, ect.), but what can you expect in such an old building?, other than that, it was a wonderful stay. Also, the directions given on the website end before the hostel.. picking up where the directions end... continue straight/left through a tiny square towards the canal and follow that path straight until you reach the hostel on your left.

The stay was pleasant yet affordable breakfast was nice and simple. Location was excellent and very central to saint marks square and to the Gran Canal. There were to stops very close San Marco and San Zaccarria. It was nice

Room Tip: I recommend booking a room with a bathroom be very clear or you will get there and share one.

This hotel is only 105 euros per night for a location within steps of St. Mark's Square, so I assumed it would be a bit loud and kinda dirty. The first night we actually considered switching hotels based on the age of the other clientale (very young partying type backpackers) because there was a couch right outside our room door where they all seemed to want to congregate. We figured we'd stay one night and then decide. This hotel turned out to be a great choice and we ended up staying 4 nights. We loved how it was realtively easy to find and how close it was to the square. We had a canalside room and the gondolas going by were very romantic. The room's decor was nice too (although very shabby in a kind of Miss Havisham way), but it all turned out to be quite romantic despite the shared bathroom. Our room was the first one at the top if the first flight of stairs and it was very convenient because we did have wi-fi access in our room and were just across the hall from the shared bathroom. We never had a problem waiting for the bathroom and the bed and pillows were perfectly comfortable; however, the place wasn't quite as clean as other accomadations. Possibly that's mostly due to the fact that everything's damp all the time. In fact, the street to the hotel was generally flooded the evenings that we were there and a couple of times my husband even ended up carrying me in because it was so deep! I did not like that the shared bathroom had a towel instead of paper towels for hand wiping. It seemed a bit unsanitary. Breakfast was fine but nothing special. There was a nice stand nearby selling Scilcilan cannolis and Bellini in a bottle (as well as Duff beer!) that we frequented. The hotel's staff was very nice and accomadating. When the water got high they were even lending out their own boots to those who were braving the streets. If I'm lucky enough to be in Venice again, I might try looking for a plusher hotel but this is definitely the best option at this price point and I would be happy to stay here again.

Room Tip: If you want a gondola view room secure it during booking. The staff will even send photos before you...

Perfect location, a two minute walk from St. Mark's Square. Very easy to find. The stay itself though, was sub-par. The bed was hard as a rock and the pillows were even harder. The room was clean, as was the shared bath. All the furniture is very old, however. And the breakfast was just average.
