While the location is indeed very good - quite close to the Rialto Bridge and numerous restaurants - about a 10 min. walk.

The hotel is old and rooms are very cut up with no two alike. We had absolutely NO view from our two windows - looked straight into a wall that had pigeon droppings all over it. We could hear everything happening in the two rooms next to ours - not pleasant. Our temperature control did not work, fortunately it was a little cool outside so we just opened the windows. The beds were not very comfortable nor the pillows. Bathroom is on the small side. The breakfast was not impressive - about 10 different sweet offerings - who wants chocolate cookies in the morning? Sliced cheese, pressed ham and white bread were offered along with a dry, pressed flat egg (they run it thru a machine). Some dry cereals were offered along with a little fruit. Absolutely LOVED Venice but would not stay at this property again.

Room tip: Ask for a room overlooking the courtyard.

I'm not sure that others will give him 4 stars. Because, as I understood from other members of our group, most of the rooms are strange with uncomfortable access and no elevator
We received a room for the disabled, on the ground level. It was spacious with a very large and well-lit bathroom.
But small, high windows with a courtyard view. There is not enough light in the room itself.
There was a problem of flooding in the bathroom because the shower's floor area is without a railing and the water has spread. The solution was to build a wall of towels rolled around.
The front desk service was excellent. Help us with whatever we requested (including a large addition of towels)
WiFi is weak and slow and requires re-login every time.
Excellent location 4 minutes walk from Rialto Bridge and 7 minutes walk from St. Mark's Square.

I stayed at the Santa Marina for 3 nights between 18 and 21 March and I have to admit I was a little disappointed. When making the booking (via Expedia) I let them know it was for our wedding anniversary and whilst I wasn't expecting bouquets of roses, champagne and violins it would have been nice to have had the fact acknowledged. Instead, we were shown to one of the hotel's smaller rooms with a view of nothing but the rooms opposite and a corrugated roof below.

The room was clean, well presented and decorated to a good standard but had no tea and coffee making facilities, it boasted probably the smallest bathtub I have ever seen and a shower that was like washing under a dripping tap. The TV was extremely small with a limited selection of channels (there was no signal for the only UK channel). I also found the front desk staff disinterested and unapproachable at times

On a more positive note, the location of the hotel was superb, only a short walk to the Rialto Bridge and central to everything you need to see in Venice. Aside from those at the front desk, most of the staff were welcoming, particularly the breakfast waitress and the porter that showed us to our room on arrival. The room was also cleaned to a good standard each day.

Overall, I think the Santa Marina struggles to reach the standard that I would expect from a 4 star hotel, and unfortunately I think your experience is very much dependent on the room you are given. Having said that the hotel is in a great location, is clean and well presented and provides a good base to explore Venice.

We arrived in Venice by train, then caught a private water taxi (70 Euro) to the little dock behind the hotel.
Lovely way to arrive, didn't mind paying the price for the taxi, as it gave us a great trip to the hotel in peace and quiet and with great views. Arriving at the dock behind the hotel made it very easy to get yourself and your luggage to the hotel ( less than a 2 minute walk)
The front desk staff met us with smiles and were helpful with the check in proceedure.
Our room was on the second floor, bright, with windows overlooking the cobbled square. We enjoyed people watching from the windows. The room itself although small, and yes with two beds pushed together to make a double was pleasant enough. The bathroom had quite a good shower and with all amenities required. Breakfast was typical of most Italian breakfast buffets, pastries, cold meats, cheeses, cereals etc.... just do not expect bacon, eggs, tomatoes etc , be happy with the selection they have, or step out and eat at one of the zillion eateries around Venice.
All in all a very pleasant stay..... Only gripe was that the small elevator broke down just as we were checking out, so we had to lug three huge suitcases down the stairs with other assorted hand luggage, and no one came to help as they were all busy watching the elevator repair men... LOL

Room tip: Overlooking the cobbled square

Absolutely brilliant, everything you would need for a city break! The hotel is on the north side of the city and only a ten minute walk from the water taxi stop (Fondemente Nove) through some charming little back lanes alongside some of the minor canals. The hotel is quite chic, and Italian in styling, not modern, has a real homely feel to it. The staff are polite, accommodating and speak a number of languages. Our room was perfect, very pretty, classic wooden furniture with lovely crisp linen sheets. The bathroom was clean and in good working order and both were regularly changed and cleaned. Breakfast was a mixture of hot food and cold continental, cereals, fruit, pastries, breads, juices etc more than you would need. The hotel is located about a 10 minute walk from the Rialto bridge, and about 15 minutes from Saint Marks (but be prepared to get lost..you'll have fun doing it though) loads and loads of restaurants and bars nearby, if you can get to the jazz bar (with hanging underwear from the ceiling!) generous measures and lovely staff. Lastly should probably say the room was quiet and comfy...a great stay!
