Santa Marina Hotel
Ranked #168 of 385 Hotels in Venice
Reviewed August 5, 2013

When I arrived at the Rialto Stop in the beautiful city of Venice, I tried to get to the Hotel of Santa Marina with my family with the information I received from maps and from what people said, however due to the fact that people either didn't know the exact location of the hotel since it was quite secluded made it especially hard to find. They kept on repeating it was a 5 minute journey but because of it's terrible location it took us an hour to find it after going through a narrow dark alleyway. However, that wasn't the worst part.

When we checked out this hotel before, it kept warning us about the apartment blocks that houses some of the guests of the hotel. We asked our travel agent about not to book those rooms (rooms 640-648) due to the response they have received, but when we checked in and the receptionist asked us to follow the bell boy I immediately walked instinctively to the hotel lift but I knew it was too good to be true because I peeped back and saw the bell boy walking out of the door. I knew it was too good to be true. We walked out turned right, walked, turned left, walked turned right.. confusing, but it doesn't end there. I wouldn't mind if it was on the bottom floor or if there was a lift to use but of course that's too simple. We had to go to the very top floor with no lift, just 3 flights of stairs, one with more than 15 steps. We had to go up there carrying our bags to the top, (with some help from the courteous bell boy) and entered our room.

To our surprise, the interior of the room was actually pretty good so it wasn't all bad.

But if you want to inquire of directions of things on maps, eat breakfast etc you have to go down to the reception area which is quite a considerable distance from the room. Also there is no available wifi. Also breakfast was OK but could be better with more variety. Cleanliness is maintained greatly and efficiently.

CAUTION: One time when I was lying down watching TV which also has quite a few good channels, (none in English though, bad point) somebody managed to open the room door with another door key. They looked confused but it breached my right to security so I am pretty angry about that too. So overall the room wasn't my cup of tea but there was some good points too like the eager staff and appealing interior.

Room Tip: Make sure that your hotel room isn't situated in the appartment block for a better more comforta...

The rooms were lovely and spacious. nice and quiet. Loved the decor. Buffet breakfast was good but limited to alot of sweet things. Location, a little hard to find but thats due to our inexperience id say. Wifi was free, thats always a plus. Id definitely reccomend this hotel.

Arrived very late in the evening and we were made to feel very welcome. We stayed in one of the dependence rooms (room 643) it was a minutes walk away down a very quiet narrow street. Our room looked over a canal - perfect! It was very clean, the air con was great. The decor was just right. There was a small area where complimentary drinks and cookies were available. We ate breakfast on the terrace overlooking the square. Cereal, croissants, fruit, meats, cooked breakfasts etc were all on offer. The staff were always polite and helpful. Venice is an amazing place and this a lovely place to stay to explore the city.

Stayed for two nights prior to joining a cruise and had no problems whatsoever. Our room was in a separate building from the main building and we were a bit wary of what we were getting. The room was very clean and the decor very new. There are no rooms on ground floor level so as long as can climb stairs there are no problems. There is a communal kitchen are we're you can make a hot drink. This is close to Rialto bridge and there some small restaurants nearby which are not overpriced. Was a little hard to find at first through the maze of small streets but I would certainly recommend it and the location is very good but if you are elderly it may be better to be accommodated in the main hotel building. We only had breakfast in this hotel and again it was very good.

This hotel was terrible. Definitely does not live up to 4 star standards. The wifi only works in the lobby and we were put up in some other building. The rooms look like granny's flat, way too many flights I stairs, no lift and the aircon has a mind of its own. The staff are rude but this is just generally the case in Italy I found (they were unable to help us take our bags to our taxi) The location is ok not the best avoid this hotel if you are under 60, and if your over 60, ask for a ground level room. On a side note Venice is boring, unless u really really love murano glass.

Great location in a quite plaza and short walk to Rialto Bridge or San Marco Square, plus there are signs to both spots along the way from the hotel. Around the corner is a great spot to get a gondola next to a cool spot to grab an outside table for a drink and people watch. The breakfast was very good and the staff was super nice. They were very helpful with directions and info.

Room Tip: I would also say avoid the annex.

Have just returned from a 3 night break in Venice with my teenage daughter and will definitely be returning. As this was the first time i had travelled abroad for many years without another adult, i was a little apprehensive. However, the hotel made us very welcome, reception staff were helpful and efficient and we were extremely happy with our accommodation. After consulting trip advisor when choosing our hotel, we were worried that the room was going to be cramped, however we were allocated an apartment next door to the hotel which was extremely spacious and well planned. It had a large bedroom and also a sitting area with 2 double settees, a chair and a desk . The decoration was typically Venice and although a little dark , was very smart and well maintained. The bathroom was spacious with a double power shower and was spotlessly clean. The breakfast was varied and tasty and served over a 3 hour time slot so it was never busy and we didn't feel rushed. The location was amazing, just five minutes from Rialto bridge and ten to fifteen minutes form St Marks. Finding the hotel was easier than expected although we stopped to ask directions a few times. We used the water bus to transfer from the airport and walked from Rialto bridge saving 40 euros on a water taxi. Venice can be expensive, but can also be done on a budget There are lots of little restaurants in the area, some have a cover charge, some don't, some charge a % service charge and some don't, so it is worth asking when choosing where to eat as it can make a big difference to your bill. There is a supermarket diagonally opposite this hotel which is a bonus as supermarkets are few and far between but we found this handy for drinks and snacks etc. All in all, a wonderful few days.

Room Tip: We were allocated 612, spacious apartment over 2 floors, we loved it. No canal view but nice all the...
