Santa Marina Hotel

Ignore negative reviews...this little hotel is a gem in a beautiful city! We booked our stay through a Groupon deal and paid only £200 each for 2 nights Bed & Breakfast as well as return flights from Gatwick! This boutique hotel is perfectly located just 10 mins walk from both Rialto Bridge and San Marco square. The reception rooms were oppulent yet cosy & welcoming. The bedroom although small was certainly big enough for the two of us, and the bathroom though also small was perfectly functional. We found all the staff to be very friendly; from the reception staff through to the chambermaids everyone greeted you with a warm hello. Breakfast was a varied and delicious range including fresh pastries, ham, cheeses and breads. The ONLY downsides were the bed was too hard and the bath was only a half-size. Would certainly recommend this as a place to stay in Venice.

third time we have been, lovely place, this January a bit wet with rain, not too cold, ate at the hard rock cafe and a couple of pizza places , not very expensive, lots of walking, researched where the hotel was about four or five times but it still can be a problem to find, it was the same the last time
I can't stress enough that you really must make sure where your hotel is. Last time we where there we saw a couple with there luggage going around in the morning at at lunch time they were still looking for there hotel.
all together we had a great time

We went to Venice on an offer, which although good I don't think I would do again. The hotel was better than I expected and the room large and clean although no view. The staff were very friendly and helpful. It was difficult to find, but anywhere in Venice is difficult to find despite numerous maps we were always lost, so it has to be comfortable shoes! The hotel was central and the staff tried their best to point us in the right direction! Breakfast was good, but the coffee was out of a machine and I was disappointed with it. We did stay in the main hotel and enjoyed the experience.

We arrived with some trepidation to the Hotel Santa Marina; having read some of the reviews given beforehand on Trip Advisor. When the friendly receptionist told us that we would be in Room 631 in the 'Annex' our hearts sank.
However, although room 631 was on the ground floor (which isn't a good idea in Venice - anywhere - because of the drains and the stink of the Canals..) it was warm, stylish, had a huge super-king bed with plenty of spare pillows and blankets to hand. The bathroom was extremely cosy (much needed because of the freezing rain!) with loads of hot water and a monsoon shower head to die for.
The only problem in this room was the smell which was concealed heavily with plug-in and stand alone air fresheners which just exacerbated the problem with their heavy perfumes just mixing with the stench of drain/Canal. However, we pulled them out and stuck them in the bathroom and opened the windows which did help.

The breakfast was typically Continental without a hot option but was good for the price.
The Hotel also have a Complimentary (free!) arrangement with a Glassworks on Murano who will collect you from the rear of the Santa Marina Hotel in a private water taxi and provides an excellent tour of one of the workshops. Catch a water 'bus' back to Saint Marks Square for 7 euros - it's fantastic value for money!
The staff at the Hotel are really helpful and can recommend good local places to eat that don't cost a fortune.
I only give it four stars because of the unfortunate smell of the drains and lack of hot breakfast; I really do recommend it to anyone thinking of a visit to Venice. It is well placed in the City and really well worth the budget. Our visit was in January, 2012. A great time to go if you don't want to battle through fellow tourists for access to the prime attractions.

Tips:
I would definitely recommend taking a neutralising air-freshener such as neutradol!
Do not be put off by other reviews; just enjoy the City.
The Hotel is great.
Biker Girl's review is spot on.

Room Tip: If you go anywhere in Venice; it's a good idea to choose a room as far away from the ground floo...

Arriving in Venice on a cold, rainy night could have been depressIng. The warm welcome at this hotel made it a positive experience. The staff knew everything we wanted to know, were effecient and sent the tone for our stay. For the price we paid it was a bargain. there was a good choice of food at breakfast, the room was clean and cosy. At night there was a small bar for drinks. As a bonus the excellent bar Zenzero was a few steps away across the square.very quiet at night an easy access by water taxi.

Stayed at the Santa marina in Jan 2013, was my mothers birthday and I surprised her to a trip to Venice she's 55 and I'm 30. I read mixed reviews on the hotel.. Was not disappointed at all, on check in the staff were all great, I had emailed the hotel on many occasions prior to the visit as I wanted to request a specific room not in the annex due to the reviews. I had replies back withing 24 hours which was great. We had a room on the 1st floor the room was cosy & well heated slightly to hot at times. The beds were hard, pillows too but they did provided softer pillows. The bathroom had a shower cubicle no bath but was a up to date modern bathroom with a rain shower etc well tiled and a good finish. The location of the hotel is 10-15 mins or less to Rialto bridge and st marks. there was a supermarket to the left of the hotel a 30 second walk which was very convenient. We landed at treviso airport and took the ATVO bus from there to piazzale Roma this took around 1 hour was €7 each €13 return. When you get to the p.roma you can take a number 1 or 2 water bus for the public (also €7 each) to Rialto stop which is 15mins and then walk to the hotel which would be another 10-15mins walk. If you want you could take the water taxis this would set you back €70 but take you direct to the hotel.. The gondola ride I say is a must yes it's €80 but well worth it, a great way to traditionally see Venice. The staff were always very helpful we had a map from them and they also pointed out places of interest. I forgot my travel adapter to convert my 3 pin to a 2 and requested this at reception and was handed one right away :-) when I next visit Venice I will most def stay here again..

I felt compelled to write a review on this hotel to stop people worrying (Like I did after reading some of the reviews). We were in the annex and it's true that you go into the hotel lobby to check in...where we were met by two very chatty and pleasant men on the front desk...so chatty and helpful in fact that I had to stop him because I just wanted to get to the room. They do take you through the hotel to a fire door and back out on the the street, but the door to our room was right there in front of us....not half a mile away like some reviews would have you believe. Now, if you can bare walking back out to the street to your own...private...front door then it's worth it! 'The Boy' as the hotel called the lovely chatty, helpful man who showed us to our room and explained absolutely everything about our room that we needed to know. When we first walked in we both thought that we'd been shown into a lobby area that would serve other rooms...so imagine our surprise and utter delight as 'the boy' then gestured to the marble staircase leading up...."and this is your room"....that's right....the seating area down stairs was our own private area and linked straight up the marble stairs to a vibrant silk walled, and leather padded boudoir! There is an excellent on suite with his and hers basins....two man shower....excellent! Our own mini bar....wardrobe...two 'gold' tub chairs and another sofa which looked like it had a pull out bed under it. The food (we had breakfast included and was the only meal we at there)...was very good...continental breakfast....choice of cereals..toast...coffee..fresh juice....very nice..very clean...very satisfactory.

but...I will say this....if you're not prepared to get lost...and then just when you think you couldn't be any more lost....find out that you are absolutely lost....don't go to Venice! The streets are a total labyrinth...because the buildings are so high you can't get a land mark to go by....the maps they give you...only serve as a guide! Another thing to tell you...we paid out for a Venice card...don't waste your money! It doesn't include travel at all! We used it once...and therefore was a total waste of money!

We got a free trip to Murano island where they Murano glass...well worth a trip...it was part of the deal when we booked online with the hotel...they pick you up for the private dock area at the back of the hotel and take you straight there.....but be warned....they don't bring you back so just go to the 'water taxi' point and wait for your boat to come sailing up...get on...sail back to where you want.

Room Tip: we were in the annex...no complaints from us...it was private...quiet...just right for a coupkes get...
