Pros: 1. Location, location, location--between the Rialto Bridge and the Rialto market on the Grand Canal, five minutes from a vaporetto stop. 2. Extremely friendly and personal service (Oliver's resturant suggestions over a six-day period were spot on). 3. Facility is a beautifully restored palazzo that shrieks "expenses be damned." 4. Spacious terrace overlooking the Grand Canal, perfect for boat watching over breakfast or before-dinner drinks.

Cons: 1. Al Ponte Antico is, in fact, not really a hotel. With only nine rooms, it's a tarted up b&b of your dreams. Personally, I like the relative anonimity that a hotel offers a traveler. At Al Ponte Antico, like it or not, you're part of an extended Ventian family.

Overview: Al Ponte Antico offered us ultimate service, superb location, and simple elegance in gorgeously appointed, small hotel (approx. 10 rooms) within a 5 minute walk from the Rialto Bridge and Rialto Vaporetto stop. From arrival to departure, the service from Owner Matteo and staff including Oliver, Rosalba, and others could not have been more welcoming, helpful, or respectful. Included breakfast has great variety and freshness. Common area and rooms are beautiful. Overall, I can't imagine a more perfect place to stay.

Common Area & Food: Our stay was also a great value with a wonderful, daily breakfast including custom-made omelettes/eggs, an almond cake that I continue to dream of (!), along with superb and fresh coffee/machiatto/capuccino, breakfast meats, and more. The dining area is a comfortable place to eat, drink an afternoon spritz, or have a nightcap. The outdoor patio is an outstanding, comfortable, and (particularly in the evening) a romantic spot to watch gondolas, vaporettos, and other boats cruise the Grand Canal.

Rooms: When you are in Venice, do you want to hang out in the room or eat, drink, and get lost walking around maze of streets and neighborhoods? My wife and I preferred the latter so we didn't bother with a large suite but rather, one of Matteo's modest rooms. Yet, the bed/sheets were comfortable, there was a safe in the room, the bathroom was modern with hot water and terrific shower pressure I'd be happy with at home in the US. Additionally, the furniture and wall upholstery is elegant and perfect for the venue. Mix this with a great common area and we were more than satisfied.

More on Service: My wife and I visited shortly after some heavy flooding in late November and despite apparent damage, Matteo's ultimate care for his property insured we knew nothing of any issues they surely had only days before our arrival. When we arrived, he greeted us by name and introduced himself with a gentle smile, friendly but not intrusive conversation, and perfect English. His staff were similarly wonderful--all remembering our names the whole way, making us feel at home in this small yet regal, former Palazzo with restored original painted ceilings and more. They helped us structure our days, our nights, and travel. Days AFTER our departure, I communicated via email with Matteo, who helped me coordinate with a local gallery owner to initiate an art purchase, which we were unable to make before leaving.

The next time we visit Venice, we would absolutely prefer to stay here again--over another large or small luxury hotel. Matteo owns other hotels and based on this very enjoyable visit, I would be delighted to visit one of his other hotels, if we plan a trip to these locations.

Feb. 2013: Return later as I will post photos again soon as they are not with me now.

Room Tip: This is a small hotel that is worth staying at for the service, value, and location. Unless you are picky for a large suite, bathtub, etc. just be happy to get a room at this desireable hotel and don't fret about getting a specific room.

This is a beautiful hotel, set right on the grand canal next to the Rialto Bridge. It has its own landing platform from the grand canal, a private Bar and Breakfast patio overlooking the amazing bridge and canal, and has a great personal service.

All the hotel staff know your name (something they take pride in) and are quick to book you any restaurant, or excursion you need or want. Its a very cosy and personal hotel.

As to the rooms; we were on our honeymoon and set in their main suit, which overlooks the canal and has a private siting area, and access to the landing platform. It is beautiful, and they made us feel so at home by giving us a complimentary bottle of champagne (tip for all honeymooners, tell them your on one in your email before arriving, worked for me). Yes the rooms aren't new or necessarily supplied with all modern cons, but thats what it is; a stylish, 17th century boutique hotel

Would defiantly recommend this hotel to anyone who's looking for a hotel on the canal that does't ask a bomb and comes with a much more personal service than you'll find elsewhere.

I Loved it.

we stayed May 2012, the water taxi ride started off our honeymoon and stay here perfectly !
the brilliant things about this beautifully restored and clean hotel
its easy to find so close to the real to
beautiful balcony to sit on daytime or evenings
fantastic large rooms
we were next to the dinning room with large windows opening out onto the balcony.
The food is utterly fantastic and the coffee to die for
Oliver and his team make you feel like the only guests they have ever had.
When we arrived home we had a beautiful wedding card waiting for us.
the breakfast tomato's which come from Sicily are the best I have ever tasted !
the whole of venice is easily reached by foot or using the water busses, we brought a 3 day pass and it was just like using the underground.
A trip to the Lido was a lovely change from the city, the beach was clean an a short walk from the stop. We loved Venice ! and having stayed here I would say its worth every penny !
Thank you Oliver and staff

Arrived at private mooring via water taxi with a personal welcome from Gigi, who knew all of our names and guided us to room and first views of the city. We had booked the junior suite for family of 4. Perfect. View of Rialto bridge and grand canal. Breakfast was excellent, in lovely environment. Free Internet, and position so close to all major sites. Only down side was the bedding and bathroom had a few "loose" components. 4+ really.

Room Tip: Junior suite for view and size of room
