My husband decided that for his 50th birthday, he wanted to wake up in Venice!

Therefore a week before his birthday we booked the Vivaldi through the Thomas Cook website, staying from 26th to 28th September, and left the children at home with my mother-in-law. We flew British Airways to Marco Polo Airport and as we only had hand luggage it was only a few minutes walk from the terminal to where the water buses and water taxis were. A water taxi to Venice would have cost us 110 euro each way, so on our budget we opted for the water bus which was 27 euro return, and after an hours journey across the lagoon we got off at the San Zaccharia bus stop, only one minutes walk from the hotel.

After a very friendly welcome at reception we were shown to our room, 208. As we had booked late there were no lagoon-view rooms left, so had booked an inner courtyard room. We were therefore thrilled to be given a side room from which had a view of the Greci canal to our right but also a view of St Marks Basin to the left, and we could see the churches of San Giorgio Maggiore and Santa Maria della Salute - WOW! The wallpaper is made from padded ornate fabric, matching the bedhead and wardrobe, the light fittings are elegant electroliers and the bathroom luxurious- we felt really posh!

The buffet breakfast in two beautiful downstairs rooms, was very filling, with a selection of pastries, cereals, toast, yoghurts, biscuits etc and a choice of juices, tea, coffee or cappuccino. The waiters and waitresses we met were all friendly and helpful.

One evening we ate upstairs on the terrace and were rewarded with a stunning sunset over Venice and a delicious meal too. It did get a little windy, but with the glass windows moved into position it was not cold at all.

We spent 3 days just wandering around - I took 800 photos and my husband took 1300- Venice is just sooooooo photogenic!

Piazza San Marco is a wonderful place to watch the world go by - you can pay 6 euro each to sit at Florian's and drink your 9 euro coffee, but we were happy sitting on the walkways used for the when the aqua alta is high, sipping the free water dispensed from the lion's mouth fountains found in most piazzas, eating a 2/3 euro sandwich or wrap. (If you think Venice prices are expensive, you've obviously never been to London!)

The main sites of Venice we just had to 'do' were The Basilica of San Marco, the fantastic views from the Campanile, the Doges Palace (another wow!), the Rialto Bridge, the Ponte dell' Accademia, Santa Mari della Salute, Santa Giovanni e Paolo (it's huge inside!), the Bridge of Sighs, the Palazzo Contarini del Bolvolo (amazing!).

We walked everywhere, just enjoying the view around every corner, and being in a hotel only a few minutes walk from Piazza San Marco was wonderful by day or night as we felt in the thick of the hustle and bustle that is Venice.

We only scratched the surface of Venice's beauty and we will return again to venture again along her canals and piazzas.

Grazie to all at the Vivaldi for making our trip to Venice so wonderful!

I have stayed in the Locanda Vivaldi three times now, and every time I leave I look forward to when I can go back. It is perfectly placed on the front near San Marco, and you can see the campanile and the Doge's Palace from all the front windows. As we stay as a three, we have always stayed in room 102, which is incredibly beautiful. It has lovely material on the walls, a huge chandelier, a beautiful painting and a balcony which you can step out on to. The room is very spacious and the bathroom is clean and modern. This time, and last, we were met with a bottle of prosecco which is a lovely treat. It also has its own landing doc which is very handy if you get a water taxi in. Breakfast is served over a generous period of time, and is delicious. I still remember when I was younger stuffing myself on pastries every morning. There is a wide selection of hot and cold food, fresh pastries and fruit. The staff who serve are very pleasant. The staff on reception are also lovely, and so helpful. Upon leaving yesterday, Venice was actually flooded more than I've ever experienced. They not only ordered us a water taxi to the airport but lent us wellies to get to it. I have no idea what we'd have done otherwise. Oh, and I almost forgot the roof terrace, my favourite place to sit and watch the sun set over Venice. Go! You're missing out if you don't.

Room Tip: Room 102 is beautiful.

This is a perfect, beautiful, hotel in Venice. It is on the Grand Canal, smaller and easy to get around, nice rooms and the staff are among the best in Italy. You can easily walk in a few minutes to San Marco Square, and some great little walkways for shopping. The Rialto Bridge, etc are just a little farther but easy to walk to. The Gondola and Boats are docked right outside.
We have stayed here a few times and it is always great.

Room Tip: Facing the canal are a must and even with the activity outside they are very quiet.

Great location on the Lagoon very near St Marks. Room was clean, good size and well appointed. Staff was very friendly. We also ate one evening in the onsite resturant and were very pleasantly surprised with an excellent meal with great service and a great view of the Lagoon. Breakfast buffet also was very good. The hotel also has its own private dock so getting there from the train station and to the airport was very convenient.

Room Tip: Go for the superior room with a view of the water.

We spent two days in September. We found this hotel to be good value for money. The Hotel is very centally located. The hotel is clean, the furniture is dated but it suits the caracter of Venice. We found most of the staff at other hotels in Italy a little unfriendly but the hotel staff at Locanda Vivaldi is friendly and they make you feel welcome. We only discovered the roof top restaurant on our second night, it is definately the best place to eat in Venice, quiet, with a good view, good food, good service and reasonabily priced. Should we ever return to Venice we will definately visit again. The hotel offers a free taxi to Murano, which I do not recommend as you have to find your own way back (unless you want to buy some very expensive over priced glass goods).

Room Tip: We upgraded to a lagoon view, which was very good!

This hotel is in the perfect position overlooking the lagoon and opposite many of the vaporetto stops and only minutes away from St Marks square on foot. The rooftop restaurant has an unrivalled view of the lagoon and the goings on on the promenade below. It is open air during the summer months but when we went in October the glass screens kept it nice and cosy.
All the staff were really helpful especially the reception and nothing was too much trouble.
The included breakfast was especially worthy of praise with lots of fresh fruit, cheeses, cold meats, and freshly baked crusty breads as well as toast bread and cereals. Bacon, scrambled eggs and boiled eggs were also available. The room we stayed in was not overlooking the lagoon but looked out onto the internal courtyard leading to the lagoon taxi arrival jetty on the canal at the side of the hotel. It was large and extremely well appointed with a comfortable very large double bed/twin. We know where we will come for our next visit

We loved the Locanda Vivaldi. Great location, wonderful staff, lovely room. Unfortunately we had no view but I guess we paid accordingly. the best part was that we were on the third floor right next to the outdoor veranda which had one of the best views of Venice. So instead of having our own private veranda we sat in the common space and had drinks there. Was wonderful!
I highly advise taking a private water taxi if arriving at the train station since it drops you right at the door. I also advise taking a private service back to the airport. The Hotel will provide you with the service

Room Tip: get the rooms facing the canal
