My husband decided that for his 50th birthday, he wanted to wake up in Venice!
Therefore a week before his birthday we booked the Vivaldi through the Thomas Cook website, staying from 26th to 28th September, and left the children at home with my mother-in-law. We flew British Airways to Marco Polo Airport and as we only had hand luggage it was only a few minutes walk from the terminal to where the water buses and water taxis were. A water taxi to Venice would have cost us 110 euro each way, so on our budget we opted for the water bus which was 27 euro return, and after an hours journey across the lagoon we got off at the San Zaccharia bus stop, only one minutes walk from the hotel.
After a very friendly welcome at reception we were shown to our room, 208. As we had booked late there were no lagoon-view rooms left, so had booked an inner courtyard room. We were therefore thrilled to be given a side room from which had a view of the Greci canal to our right but also a view of St Marks Basin to the left, and we could see the churches of San Giorgio Maggiore and Santa Maria della Salute - WOW! The wallpaper is made from padded ornate fabric, matching the bedhead and wardrobe, the light fittings are elegant electroliers and the bathroom luxurious- we felt really posh!
The buffet breakfast in two beautiful downstairs rooms, was very filling, with a selection of pastries, cereals, toast, yoghurts, biscuits etc and a choice of juices, tea, coffee or cappuccino. The waiters and waitresses we met were all friendly and helpful.
One evening we ate upstairs on the terrace and were rewarded with a stunning sunset over Venice and a delicious meal too. It did get a little windy, but with the glass windows moved into position it was not cold at all.
We spent 3 days just wandering around - I took 800 photos and my husband took 1300- Venice is just sooooooo photogenic!
Piazza San Marco is a wonderful place to watch the world go by - you can pay 6 euro each to sit at Florian's and drink your 9 euro coffee, but we were happy sitting on the walkways used for the when the aqua alta is high, sipping the free water dispensed from the lion's mouth fountains found in most piazzas, eating a 2/3 euro sandwich or wrap. (If you think Venice prices are expensive, you've obviously never been to London!)
The main sites of Venice we just had to 'do' were The Basilica of San Marco, the fantastic views from the Campanile, the Doges Palace (another wow!), the Rialto Bridge, the Ponte dell' Accademia, Santa Mari della Salute, Santa Giovanni e Paolo (it's huge inside!), the Bridge of Sighs, the Palazzo Contarini del Bolvolo (amazing!).
We walked everywhere, just enjoying the view around every corner, and being in a hotel only a few minutes walk from Piazza San Marco was wonderful by day or night as we felt in the thick of the hustle and bustle that is Venice.
We only scratched the surface of Venice's beauty and we will return again to venture again along her canals and piazzas.
Grazie to all at the Vivaldi for making our trip to Venice so wonderful!
