“Good accom in Venice”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 5, 2013

Ok, similar to other reviews. Pros: good location short walk from the main carpark and train station, friendly front desk staff, clean rooms. Cons: church bells ring very loudly 60 times (no joke) each at approx 7.45 and 8am every morning, breakfast is terrible - close to the worst we've had even in very cheap accom in Europe. Hard to know whether this was good value with nothing else to compare to....but we would probably consider it again for a return trip.

The hotel is exceptionally well located, just 1 block from the Santa Lucia train station, and 1/2 block from the Grand Canal. The staff is friendly and very helpful. The rooms are well maintained and large enough (I was traveling with my wife and two daughters and stayed in a single room large enough for all of us). Free internet (which is hard to find around in Europe!).

Room Tip: No elevators in the building. Ask for lower floors if traveling with heavy luggage.

This is a great hotel in a great location. Near the Santa Lucia station, you can get to it without dragging your cases over bridges or struggling with them in crowded vaporetti. Just remember to use the ramp exit from the station, on the left as you exit, and you'll avoid even the station steps.

Hotel staff are excellent, helpful and friendly. Rooms are a good size and the beds extremely comfortable, but a shower curtain would be useful in the bathroom. Breakfast is nothing special but adequate, but they could do a much better job of resetting tables and replenishing items as they run out. I notice a few complaints about the bells from the abbey, but they didn't trouble me.

Room Tip: If you, like me, are weak of leg and getting on in years, ask for a ground floor room when booking...

Others have already said it in the many reviews on this site, but the Abbazia really is a very solid choice, particularly if you arrive by train, in which case it is a two minute walk. Rooms were a little on the small side but nicely furnished, and the public areas were very comfortable. Breakfast in Italian hotels is normally a fairly standardised experience - sugary pastries, coffee from a machine etc. but this was a little better and it was a bonus that some hot food was also available.

The staff all speak very good English and are extremely welcoming. As has been mentioned, it's very easy to find your way back after a day of pleasurable wandering because there are yellow signs directing one to the train station ("alla ferrovia") all over the city.

If you have a good map and head towards the north-eastern part of the Cannaregio district - the Fondamenta della Misericorda and around - there are some very nice restaurants in one of the least touristy parts of town. It's about a fifteen minute walk.

This is a charming, clean, historic, hotel which sits in a narrow alley just steps from the Santa Lucia Train station entrance. This was a monastery and the rooms face a lovely courtyard. The rooms have A/C, cable TV with BBC, wi-fi, and a bathtub (without shower curtains). The breakfast is also very good with a wide selection of food and drink in a spacious breakfast room. The staff is very friendly, helpful and speak English well. There are also two restaurants in the same alley for lunch and dinner. And, the water bus stop and ticketing window is a very short 2 minute walk away. The best part of this hotel is that you do not have to carry your luggage over any sort of bridge from the train station. Although there is no elevator in this hotel, the porter can bring your bags to your room if necessary. I cannot find fault with this hotel except maybe the price which consistently remains on the high side even in winter.

Room Tip: All rooms will be subjected to the sound of bells from the church next door, as in every part of Ita...

"Location, location location. Everything in life is location", Mel Brooks said as the character Van Helsing in Dracula Dead and Loving It, and for Venice it certainly holds true.
As a first-time visitor, finding your way is not very easy which is why for the choice of hotel location is crucial. This hotel is literally by the train station, but don't miss the narrow alley leading towards it. It's the very first left right between two restaurants, I almost missed it. After check-in you can take a leisurely stroll in the city and observe other tourists looking for their hotel with increasing desperation in their eyes.

This hotel is a good choice for other reasons as well. The staff is very friendly and speak several languages (Italian, English, German, Spanish and French). They can also help with questions regarding Venice, sights and restaurants.

The room (no 101) was slightly cramped, but a first floor room (that's ground floor in Europe) means you don't have to take the stairs. The room was spotlessly cleaned and very cozy. A bit on the warm side, but the window to the garden could be opened for a bit of fresh air. Tried the AC, but it only spewed hot air at me (only ran it for a couple of minutes so can't say if it would've turned cold or not). The bathroom shower cabin could use an upgrade though, a bit worn, but had no problems using it.

In the morning you'll be awoken by (church?) bells ringing followed by heavy noise from the garden refurbishment, although that should be temporary.
The breakfast is very good, full Italian standard with your choice of hot croissants, toast, müsli, yogurts to eat and juice/coffee/water to drink.

The center of Venice is rather small and you can easily reach everything on the main islands on foot. Should you need it, the Vaporetto (water bus) stop is just outside the hotel (by the train station). Finding your way back walking is made easy by all the signs pointing you in the direction of the train station (alla ferrovia) and it felt safe on all hours to walk about the city and the hotel area. I'd recommend this hotel to anyone going to Venice!
