“Another great find from Gate 1 Travel!”
Reviewed March 9, 2009

Gate 1 Travel booked us into the Hotel Olimpia in Venice during our multi-city rail trip of Italy, and it was the perfect accommodation for the final leg of our trip. The hotel was the smallest we'd stayed in, but the rooms were still a nice size and immaculately decorated. I still dream about those lovely Murano glass chandeliers. The entire hotel was adorable, and the breakfast, both the room and the food, made for a great start to the day. Hotel Olimpia is located just across from both the bus and train stations so it's very easy to get to.

We stayed at the Best Western Olimpia for two nights in February. Excellent location if travelling to Piazzalle di Roma by bus, as it is only a few minutes walk. Especially good if you have a ryanair flight to/from Treviso as the buses coincide with the flight times. We found the hotel excellent value for money, especially in rip-off Venice, although the internet access was overpriced at five euros for half an hour.

The rooms were immaculately clean with fresh towels etc on our second night. Breakfast was better than we expected. Staff friendly and helpful.

Avoid the restaurants just around the corner, we had two bad experiences.

Would defintely reccommend this hotel and would stay here again.

The Olimpia is a great little hotel with a very convenient location. We felt the room was pretty, as was the hotel in general. Great bathroom, plenty of water pressure and hot water in the morning.

Breakfast was great, with more than an adequate supply of pastries, rolls, cheese & meats, cereals, yogurts, etc. offered. There was a hot breakfast menu on the table, but we never tried it. As another reviewer noted, excellent coffee!

We also really appreciated the helpful and friendly staff, especially Francisco(I am probably getting his name wrong, so sorry) and Mirco, who answered all of our questions and helped me when one of my bags went missing courtesy of the airline.

There are three important reasons why I reccomend this hotel;

Firstly , because it takes only five minutes to get the rail way station, bus station and a boat station from the hotel. Remember - in the center of Venice you can use only ONE TRANSPORT - your FOOTs!

Secondly, In Venice exists three types of sihgns which helps you to find the three most important destinations; Per Rialto( the bridge), Per San Marko (the square) and Per Ferrova or Piazzale Roma (train station). This sihgns you could see everywhere and the last two always will show the way to the hotel Olimpia. Especcially at the night time! You have to know - the orientiering even with the map is very difficult, because you can not see all the bridges on it and all the time you reach the water at the end of the streets!

And the third reason is the hotel personal. There works one guy Mirco. He speaks english, spanish, french, german and russian. By the way, he is very well educated person and pays a lot attention to all your demands - that happends in Italy very very seldom! The director is a very kind and friendly person as well. Be sure, they help you to find out all your problems.
Beside this hotel demonstraits a TV programm about history of Venice on several languages. It helps you much to realise where you really are now! Good luck!

The hotel was pretty easy to find from the train station. We found it difficult to carry our luggage across the stairs over the bridge but they say to pack light when in Venice (and we obviously didn't listen).
The room was nice (italian tacky decor :) with a large bathroom with bathtub, flat screen tv, minibar--normal hotel you would find in north america etc. Much better than the other two hotels we stayed at. BUT the one thing that bothered me was this smell. It was this strong floral/toilette odor...it drove me insane! It mostly came from the bathroom and I literally had to hold my breath or even spray perfume to mask it before I went in there cause it was not pleasant and it was so over bearing. U could smell it around the hotel and it was just too strong.
The breakfast was fantastic--fresh fruit, cereals, eggs, cappincino, brie cheese, ham, croissants, nutella, cream cheese etc (the best we had in rome compared to our other hotels). We were able to easily get a water taxi near by and go to the main sites such as the rialto bridge and st marks square. By this time we were so sick of italian food so we were grateful to find a falafel place near by (near their university area). A grocery store was also in walking distance so we were able to get food and store it in our minibar. Do yourself a favor and take some food from the breakfast buffet for snacks :) cause everything is so expensive.
THey did have wifi in the building so we were able to use our laptop in our room ( we were on the 2nd floor). We were overall pleased with the service--u really noticed difference in service of this american chain versus the other hotels around.

Hotel Olimpia was in a good location as far as it is close to the train station and you won't have to haul your luggage all over Venice. The hotel was going through some renovations when we were there, so it was a maze to get to our room. Our room was clean and the breakfast that was included was decent. What left us upset about our stay was the lack of help and communication from the hotel staff. When we checked in, we explained how we had an early morning flight and asked the best way to get to the airport. They suggested a bus, however it wasn't going to be running early enough; therefore, they said they would call us a taxi. The next night, when we got back to the hotel in the evening (approx. 10:30 pm), they said it was too late to call a taxi and we'd have to take the bus. When we checked out in the morning at 4 am, we were on our own on finding transportation to get us there in time. Luckily, we found a local guy to help us out. We were so upset at the hotel for not explaining to us that we had a time cut-off for ordering a taxi. We felt this was important information they should have told us when we originally inquired about the taxi.

a perfectly lovely hotel just as you arrive in Venice.
you can see the hotel from the bus/taxi/train station parking area. there are two bridges to navigate with your luggage, but from what we saw from watching others, struggling with bags on and off the crowded, swaying vaporetti, we were only too happy to stay on the sidewalks for the 2-bridge walk to the opposite shore of the canal.
our room was nice and quiet in the back of the building, overlooking an alley, and not the pretty garden courtyard (which is set foruse at morning breakfast as part of the restaurant area), but we were out of the hotel all day, we did not care to open the windows anyway. I had worried about the noise from the practically adjacent city parking terminus, but we did not hear a thing from our side.
Breakfast was acceptable and the coffee was exceptional. a separate carafe of hot frothy milk is brought with every order of "coffee with cream and sugar" - heaven!
since all mods of transportation are available across the canal, getting around in Venice could not be easier from this hotel. Vaporetti terminus is here, so going off in either direction is simple. Several nice, simple hot and filling restaurants are in the block of the hotel. good value places to eat with pleasant staff, above-average fare and choice of inside or canal-side dining. the college is also nearby, so the student types pass by in crowds. there is a dry cleaner down this way, which would be convenient if needed.
If you don't need a canal view, and prefer to check in quickly on arrival without miles of streets and canals between you and putting the luggage down, this is the place.

  • Liked — Location and charm
  • Disliked — no luggage porter to Piazza Roma across the canal
