We just returned from a delightful 4 days in Venice. My daughter and her husband and her 3 young children stayed at the Hotel Metropole. It was delightful. Great location, near San Marco convenient for catching pigeons, lovely friendly staff, bus ferries stop directly in front of hotel....most of all a wonderful spacious 'family bedroom' with 2 king beds, a sofa and room to play on the floor. I stayed in the 4 person 'family room' with the 3 kids. Really recommend this hotel for families.

Room Tip: 4 person 'family' room

Stayed here for 3 nights at the end of February 2011 . We had been here in September 2008 but wanted to return for the famous Carnival. This is a superbly run hotel with pleasant, friendly staff who go out of their way to help. Great location for St Marks square and some really good restaurants ( Osteria Oliva Nera is the best of them ). In summer, breakfast in the garden at the rear is a unique experience for Venice. This city is one we keep revisiting and we will not be staying anywhere other than the Metropole.

From East Midlands in England to Marco Polo Venice, then a water taxi ride to the Metropole Hotel. (Taxi 100 euro)
Arrived direct to the hotel where after ringing the bell the porter and hotel staff collected our bags.
The staff at the from desk were very helpful and the porter carried the bags to the room and showed us where everything was.
After a quick change we went exploring with tour map as provided by the hotel.

HOTEL
The hotel is old world as is much of Venice so I would expect it to be hard to find a untra modern hotel anywhere.
Reception was small but clean, tidy and the staff were always their to help.
The hotel has two small lifts leading to your rooms from the reception area. Rooms are locatred on four floors.
Our room was a junior suite with a lagoon view.
We were based on the fourth floor and also had stairs from the door up to a balcony on the roof which in summer must be wonderful with a view over the roof tops of Venice and a view of the lagoon the other way. (It was too cold to spand much time on the roof in January).
Bedroom was a reasonable size and had a separate area with tv and settee.
The bathroom had sink, wc, bath and a tap shower with no shower curtain which made it very difficult to have a shower. Their was no separate shower.

FACILITIES
The hotel has a bar next to the main enterance which has low back ground music and helpful staff. But it is very expensive (Round of 4 drinks 70 euro every time).
Breakfast was served a the rear dinning room of the hotel and was clean, tidy and had attentive staff. It was mainly a continental breakfast where you help yourself, however you could also have scambled eggs and thin bacon. The staff served you endless coffee which was of good quality.
Evening meal was served in the main restaurant and was a ** Michelin.
We ordered the sample menu which was 10 courses and included such delights as pigeon, hare, fros gras, caviar etc. The meal lasted 4 and a half hours and I could swear we had 12 to 14 courses as they did not include a chef's pre-desert and palet cleansers in betweeen courses. 'FANTASTIC'. The set menu started at 125 p.p. euro without wine.
etc.
The hotel does not have a spar or a swimming pool and this is not unusual for Venice as space is limited.

VENICE
Venice was great, but be prepared to pay top dollar for everything.
Saw no cars for 4 days.

TIP
Take plenty of money and you will enjoy yourself.
We went with firends and enjoyed every minute,

For the most part, we enjoyed our stay at the hotel, just not Venice in particular but that is outside the scope of this review. We arrived in Venice via plane, and then took a water taxi to our hotel. It was raining, but lucky for us, our arrival was painless as the hotel was right on the grand canal and there was actually a dock that got us directly to our hotel.

The hotel is very grand, with the lobby and common areas on the main floor creating almost a museum like display with all the antiques and artifacts. It was definately an older style hotel, so if you are into modern this is probably not the hotel for you, although the garden in the back is beatiful and serene, which is rare to find in Venice, especially along the grand canal! The rooms were a good size, for Venice standards they were very large, and ours had a decent view of the lagoon. The beds were the most comfortable of our stay in Italy.

We cannot comment on the M restaurant. The staff is not overly friendly at the front desk, but helpful when asked. We were also pleasantly surprised with a room upgrade and champagne for our honeymoon. The breakfast buffet was good, but as other postings said, surprised that hot foods were not included as this was a 5 star property. We did eat at Al Covo, which is a wonderful restaurant in walkind distance to the hotel.

Our only complaint were the crowds. While being on the grand hotel is definately a plus, the crowds made it almost a negative. It was probably the time of year being the Venice Film Festival and the beginning of the Regatta. Overall nice stay and the hotel is beautiful.

My partner and I were in Venice for a we break, we had a 2 st floor side view, which was so old and used that it seems to be in some grandmama house. Wiring doesn't work at all we had no light in the room for 4 times in 1 day... finally we heard a bang on the wall, and it stinks, then we changed the room to a suite that was horrible, ridiculous, decorated with winged cherubs. There were pistachio shells on the floor and remains of fruit, in front of the bed a television prehistoric encased in a theater... Everything was old and worn. Absolutely one of the worst hotel I have ever seen.

We stayed in this hotel, one night post cruise, because of a Frommer recommendation. The hotel is located right on the Grand Canal 3 bridges from San Marco and has a water taxi entrance. The hotel had reserved a water taxi for us from the pier and when we got to the hotel the bellhop was at the door ready to take our luggage and addressed us by name. The rooms were ready within an hour of arrival which was about 11 o'clock. Each of the 4 couples had a different size room, even though we paid the same amount. All the rooms had different types of antique furniture. All the beds were kingsize and confortable . Bathrooms were large and modern with excellent amendities. There was a flat screen TV, safe and mini bar in the room. Robe and slippers were also provided. There was turn down service at night.
Concierge was extremely helpful in arranging dinner for us in a non- tourist restaurant.
He also gave us several suggestions for a days worth of touring Venice, Extremely pleasant and helpful.
Wifi was $20.00 a day. Great breakfast buffet was included in the price. If you book more than 30 days in advance on line the price of the room is 15% less.
