Hotel Carlton on the Grand Canal
Ranked #138 of 387 Hotels in Venice
Reviewed September 1, 2013

Stayed for one night after a long flight from Australia. Caught a water taxi from the airport directly to the hotel. Very convenient. Had rooms 306 and 307 overlooking the canal. Rooms were old but clean. Bed comfortable. Lovely to watch the working canal first thing in the morning with delivery boats etc. etc. beautiful introduction to Venice. Train station directly opposite on the canal. Only problem was getting luggage across the bridge with many stairs to the train station. Breakfast was great and catered for many tastes. Staff were friendly and helpful. Dined at a restaurant next door on the canal with great pasta. Very convenient to all facilities.

Stayed: August 2013

We booked this hotel for its excellent location - straight across the river from the station. The outside of the hotel and the lobby looks very good. However the rooms were very shabby. They were outdated and bathrooms could also do with an update. The breakfast wasn't great either. The value for money was really poor - we paid 180 euros for one night. In comparison to the other places we visited in Italy (Milan and Florence) we were really disappointed with the value for money here.

We visited this hotel a couple of weeks ago and loved it! It was perfect location for us, having easy access to the local bus, train and water bus taxis. We got a free upgrade to a canal view with a balcony which topped it off, it was just brilliant! The rooms were 'quite small' but not 'too small' with traditional Italian décor. The breakfast was good, staff were friendly and our room was cleaned daily, we highly recommend and would go back!

A superb canal side hotel, well run, clean and comfortable rooms.
Excellent location directly opposite the railway station, with many waterbus stops outside the station. Breakfast is varied and excellent, served in the dedicated breakfast room.
The restaurant for dinner was a little disappointment. Food only average, although quite edible was nothing special, and somewhat expensive, but the ambiance was very good.
Rooms well appointed but some a tad on the small side.
Overall for a city break in this wonderful city this hotel ticks all the boxes.

Room Tip: Room 112 large and spacious overlooking the Grand canal

When we arrived in Venice by train it was hot. The hotel is right across the Grand Canal from the station which is a big plus. But then we were faced with bumping our two suitcases up and over the many steps of the Ponte Scalzi in that heat. A porter who introduced himself as "Massimo" offered to load our luggage on a special dolly for stairs and take it to the hotel at 5 euros per bag. When we settled on the price we followed him up and over. Turns out they knew him at the Carlton and referred to him as a good guy.
We were impressed by the level of service at the hotel. At the desk we checked in (and out) by Jacopo who was very efficient and pleasant. Gave us good information about the water bus system the best places to walk made phone calls on our behalf and finally arranged for our water taxi transfer to a car and on to the airport on the day we left. The other staff at the desk were equally pleasant and helpful. We review local restaurants elsewhere.
The room right off the lobby is spacious and we were able to use Wi-Fi there. Just beyond was the breakfast room. In the mornings we found the variety of food excellent and the staff pleasant, fast moving and efficient. We found the outdoor tables along the front of the hotel an enjoyable place to sit and enjoy a drink or two in the evening and enjoy the ambiance along the Grand Canal. Let the barperson know you're there and you'll get served promptly.
Our room was way in the back of the hotel (271). Very clean and the housekeeping staff was prompt in making up the room and courteous whenever we met them. However the room was dark. The windows looked out on the tile roofs of a back alley so there wasn't much light coming in. The bathroom was a bit cramped and the tub where we showered was quite narrow and we are slim people. Having said this the room was otherwise quite comfortable. What made our stay pleasant was the location and the high quality of service.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a spacious bathroom that faces the Grand Canal.

Just returned from 5 days at this hotel and i have to say that the hotel was better than i expected. Had read some reviews before we went and was a little worried by some of the comments. Not sure what some people expect. Anyway, we had a lovely time. It was clean and comfortable. The staff were very attentive and helped us with all our inquiries. My only criticism, if i have to make one, is there are no tea/coffee facilities in the room . After a long day walking it would have been nice to be able to make our own. The breakfasts were very good with a wide choice on offer. Can't make any comment on the hotel restaurant as we did not eat there as we felt it was a little over priced. All in all a good hotel in a very good spot for all the attractions Venice has to offer.

some comments before we went looked petti but now 1st hand. rooms old , air con very poor, the breakfast nice, staff nice. and then they have a disco on at night that can be heard in the rooms not good. but our real concern was the lack of training the staff had when the fire alarms went off at 12.15am, the first concern is the sound of the alarms was very faint and would not and did not wake many people up, there was no help from the desk when we tried to find out if it was a false alarm he did not no what was happening. i walked throw the hotel with another guest to check for any fire and there was no staff to be seen on any floors doing the same.
so sorry in all my reviews this as a top hotel is at the bottom of my list

Dear Turtlemanor,
We are very sorry to learn that you have formed a negative impression on our hotel and would like to explain our position.
Our core business is hospitality and we are aware that a holiday represents a substantial economic and emotional investment. Consequently, we do our utmost to constantly improve our level of service. As such, any client feedback or suggestions are warmly welcomed and are taken very seriously.
The disco you refer to was a special “Summer Happy Hour Party” which took place in our Top of the Carlton Sky Lounge on 5 dates during July and August. On all nights the music was played at an appropriate volume and definitely stopped at 11 PM just not to disturb other clients.
As to the alarm you refer to, we assure you that it was not the fire alarm as the sound of the same is very very loud, which can be heard from the neighborhood too and keeps going on until the person in charge stops it. If activated, it remains reported in our system and we have no trace of fire alarms in the past days. We assure you also that our staff follows periodic trainings and updates on emergency and security.
We hope this explanation will partly restore your negative opinion and assure you that if you give us the chance in the future and come back to Venice, we will do all the possible to make amends.
With renewed apologies for the inconvenience we have unintentionally caused, please accept our best regards.
