This hotel had good views and was close to the train station. The hotel itself is what I expected in Venice, it was old and the room were somewhat run down. There is a nice lobby/atrium with a retractable roof. The hotel is far from St Marks square. The streets of Venice were even more confusing then what I expected. If trying to walk to St Marks square you need to follow the signs to Rialto Bridge then to Piazza San Marco. We did it but it was somewhat challenging. I would recommend venturing off the main canals to find restaurants as we found some real gems.

Having read some of the reviews for this hotel we were somewhat surprised how nice it was. Location was perfect opposite waterbus stop and very well placed for our arrival too, Room was not big but plenty big enough to sleep in. Nice bathroom all very clean and lovely hot water. Breakfast was buffet style with plenty of choice. Staff very friendly and spoke English. Just a note to those who have complained about a) expensive: Venice is expensive expect to pay double for every thing, except that fact and you will enjoy yourself b) tea and coffee facilities arnt offered in hotels etc in Europe, so don't expect them. We always take a travel kettle and coffee and tea with us.

Venice was beautiful with its Grand Canal. We took a gondola ride through the canals and it was so much fun! The Hotel Carlton is right on the canal and the lobby and restaurant were beautiful but the rooms were way too small and you could hardly open 2 suitcases. The room did have a bathtub in the bathroom but alot of rooms did not have bathtubs. The breakfast was very good. We took a water taxi over to St. Mark's Square and ate dinner there. After dinner we walked around St. Mark's and then waited for our water taxi to take us back to the Hotel Carlton. As we were waiting we sat at a table near the Doges' Palace and enjoyed the magic of the beautiful night. The Doges' Palace just came alive looking at it while an orchestra played away for some event right across from the Palace. We could just imagine the people coming alive in the palace. We had another dinner with a couple at Ostaria al Vecio Pozzo (near Hotel Carlton) and it was very expensive and isolated on a tiny street. The food was delicious with an accordion and a flute player serenading us. They wanted money though for this one song they played. We didn't give them any money as they only played one song. Venice is just beautiful and a wonderful place to go.

When you step out of the train station you can see the hotel which was brilliant, there was only one bridge to cross! All of the hotel staff were friendly and helpful. We had a room which looked out onto a courtyard. The room was nice and the decor was traditional Venetian style. Although the room was on the small side it had everything we needed. The room was cleaned everyday. Breakfast was good, there was fresh fruit, cereal, bacon, scrambled eggs, yoghurt and croissants.
We used a water bus to travel around Venice. We also walked from the hotel to St. Marks Square which took around 30 minutes. It was a great way to see the hidden streets of Venice!
We stayed at the hotel for 3 nights and I would definitely stay again. The staff were helpful and the hotel is in a very good location.
