Hotel Carlton on the Grand Canal
Ranked #140 of 387 Hotels in Venice
Reviewed June 24, 2012

We chose this hotel for the location.
We stayed 3 nights and it was perfect.
You do not want to walk around venice with suitcases looking for your hotel.
The Carlton Grand is opposite the Santa Lucia Station.and is also a ten minute walk to Piazzale Roma's bus terminus.
The bus to the Marco Polo Airport is 5 Euros and takes about 25 minutes.
So this is how we saw wonderful Venice in 4 Days.
From Marco Polo airport.
We used the a water taxi to the Carlton, the price is expensive but we have never done it before, so we decided to travel this way and get the bus back.
The fare was 110 Euros for the two of us you can split the fare if there are more of you.
A word of warning they do go fast till they reach the entrance in to Venice where there is a speed limit.
The experience is well worth it, and the taxi stopped in front of the hotel.
The Carlton is a lovely hotel, and the staff are excellent. We booked bed & breakfast.
As we arrived late afternoon, we had dinner in the hotel as there was a special deal for first night stay.
The 3 courses were very very good and the service was first class.
I would advise you look at Viator as we booked two tours for two days.
The first was an Island tour,Murano,Bruano,Torchello which is about £16.00 each and is very good.
On the second day we did Skip the Line: Venice In One Day tour this cost about £45.00 each but is well worth it.
We had dinner the second night at Trattoria Povoledo five minutes from the hotel.
Pre book and try and get a table on the terrace it's beautful at night.
Back to hotel and drinks on the roof top served by Sebastin wonderful end to the evening.
The third night we ate at Trattoria Vi Venzia which is further up the street from Polovedo this was also very good about the same price for three courses.
On our last day we went on a Vaporetto a stop is opposite the hotel over the Scalzi Bridge to a couple of stops and walked another part of venice.
We had lunch at Trattoria Al Ponte de Megio which was very good and very reasonable.
The Gondalier is here so after lunch we took the Gondola the price is £65.00 for forty minutes, expensive but it was our first time and it has got to be done.
The ride was wonderful and well worth it.
As it was our first time to Venice we made the most of our four days there
We will return again.

Excellent location with beautiful views of the grand canal and everything within walking distance.

We got the atvo buses to the centre of Venice from the airport and saved so much by doing this rather than getting a water taxi for example.

I found the rooms beautifully decorated and the breakfast also very nice with a variety to choose from.

Would definitely recommend this hotel and would hope to return again.

This hotel is situated in a good place opposite the railway station and just a little walk and over one large bridge is the bus station. The hotel was clean and comfortable, we had a canal view which was lovely as had two large windows in our room and it wasn' t too noisy either. It was wonderful to open your window to the canal view first thing in the morning and all the hustle and bustle of Venetian life. Our only disappointment was the room was smaller than we expected as we had booked the superior double room with canal view - one wardrobe and dressing table with fridge but no drawers. The desk staff were very helpful and especially one member of staff Claudia who went out of her way to get us information about restaurants and entertainment and especially her recommendation of a opera (La Traviata) held in a beautiful house where we moved rooms for each act ... I think that the opera is a must! The gondolas can be pricy but you can knock them down from 120euros to 80euros. Everyone does speak english but according to which country you come from they sometimes charge you accordingly too and not just the gondolas! The water buses are a must as you can pick up a ticket for 45euros for 72hrs which you can travel all over and we used it a lot and because some of the places are a bit of a distance away you can see some wonderful places as you are travelling towards your destination. I would watch the 'free' excursions though because if they dont get you for the price of the trip they will definitely get you on the hard sell when you're there ... we saw a lot of this especially for the Murano factory. You must try their local aperitif 'Aperol' or spritz as they call it too - very refreshing! Overall though a wonderful place to stay. I would use this hotel again.

Having staid at the Hotel Carlton for the past three years my wife and I would strongly recommend it not only for its ideal location on the grand canal but the services offered and comfortable surroundings

Room Tip: We have always occupied a junior suite for the extra space and facilities provided.

Really enjoyed our stay here. This hotel is far better than the the hotel next door, which had high reviews on Trip Advisor, the Hotel Antiche Figure. This hotel has a far better breakfast and the room are much larger. The front desk was great and they really were wonderful to us during our stay. They recommended some fantastic restaurants near by.The location is great if you need to get to the train station(across the canal, one BIG bridge away) or is you are coming from the airport(only about a five minute walk with 3 or 4 small bridges to cross) We had a side canal room which was perfect because the main canal can have a lot of sound that is carried on the water.I really enjoyed out stay at the Carlton and am returning again to in the fall!

My daughter and future son-in-law will forever remember this hotel as they became engaged on the rooftop overlooking Venice. I assisted my daughter in planning this trip to Venice and worked with the hotel staff reservation dept, Jessica and Silvia. They are outstanding, and follow each attention to detail with such kindness and professionalism. They orchestrated a perfect arrival of room service upon a late check-in, they orchestrated a memorable 5 course dinner in an extremely romantic way for this special couple so in love. They treated my family as if they were family to them too and wanted the best for them. The entire staff is first class, the hotel is perfect, and the location is excellent. My daughter may have become engaged on the rooftop, but I wish I could be on the rooftop shouting to everyone what a perfect hotel this is and how they are exceptional in every sense of hospitality.

My wife and I spent several days at the Carlton and thoroughly enjoyed our visit. The hotel is in a great location and is quite beautiful. The common areas and our room room were very nice and the restaurant was quite good. What made our stay so pleasurable, though, was the staff. During our stay the entire staff, from front desk personnel, and maitre d' and waitstaff, to our maid, went out of their way to make us comfortable. Unfortunately, when we checked out of the hotel we forgot some personal items. The front desk staff not only located the items but also made all arrangements required to have them shipped to us at our home, no mean feat considering today's security and customs regulations. We will definitely return to Venice and we will definitely stay at the Hotel Carlton On The Grand Canal when we do.
