In retrospect, I must have walked by this bookshop ten times on my previous trip to Venice, without realizing it was there. This time I knew about it and we hunted it down, and it was worth the effort. The cats are great, the stacks of books in all kinds of boats and everywhere were very atmospheric, and there were tons of cute little touches throughout. It will make you smile.

The sign outside says "The most beautiful bookshop in the world" and in a way it probably is. Books filling bathtubs and gondalas, a warren of interconnected rooms where cats stroll through at their leisure, a doorway leading straight out onto a canal where the water level seems a precarious few centimetres away from spilling into the room and, in a tiny quiet courtyard, a staircase made entirely from books. Climb up to the top to look over the high wall for a lovely view out onto the canals.

You probably won't be able to find any specific books given the haphazard nature of the piles but it's a great place to pick up some lovely (and decently priced) postcards and to stop for a chat with the friendly and charming owner.

We spend a lovely hour just exploring and photographing the place, which the owner didn't mind at all. A gem of a memory.

books in gondolas, books in bathtubs, cats in bookshelves - what's not to like! You can spend hours looking through books and old prints or just say hi to a cat. Definitely can recommend a visit!

Some piles of books. Making a staircase from books is sort of barbarian for me. You can enter if you are nearby

It's an oddity to be sure- a bookstore with a gondola and a bathtub of books, but to me it was really just a hoarder's paradise. The books are everywhere. On every surface. It's a mess if you're really looking to find a particular book, however if you're willing to hunt, you can probably find something. It was a quick 5 minutes to check out the stairway built of old books in the back, and pet the cats, but I wouldn't say it was one of the best attractions in the city.
